Legitimate issue with Cedar Point claim

Let's see:

1) Rob posts "CP sucks because..." thread.

2) A few people jump on him quickly.

3) Rob points to "the obvious CP fanboy bias."

4) Thread goes off on it's own momentum for three pages in less than one day.

Yep. Just another day in CoasterBuzz.

Wyandot Lake used to advertise 80 (or some obnoxious number) ride and attractions. (!) One slow day at work I tried to get to 80 and I couldn't get there, even with counting water fountains and bathrooms. I don't know how many arcade games there are so that may have pushed it to 80.

Interestingly, they no longer make that claim. :)

"And that's why I think it dilutes the amusement park experience. You'll have people claiming that this or that park sucks because they only have 10 coasters and nothing over 200 feet tall. Cedar Point, or maybe the bigger is better advertising mentality has created this image in people's minds that you have to have the most or the tallest to make the park worthwhile. It's pure garbage but try telling a hyperactive 14 year old that a 90 foot tall wooden coaster can be a lot of fun."

That whole paragraph is bunk. The ONLY people who are claiming that this or that park sucks because they only have 10 coasters or nothing over 200ft. tall are coaster enthusiasses and they make up about .000000001% of the total park attendants. I think PKI has proven that the GP doesn't give a rat's @ss about records.

Sometimes it is not just the enthusiasts. I have heard it plenty of times from other parkgoers.
The fact that a park that is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, Sandusky Ohio....I mean Ohio is big but it's not that big.

Obviously their marketing is working seeing how a small town in Ohio is able to outdraw every year: Chicago/Milwaukee, Los Angelas, New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio....

Perhaps their marketing has turned Cedar Point into a Destination Park.

People like records. We're friggin' American.

Comingoutofyeeeehaaaaa!

Remember those posters that said, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life?" Well, that's true for every day but one - the day you die.

*breaks from neutral* Ok heres something for you, Cedar Point is the best, well because it is the best, espcecially at breaking records, even if they don't hold them all. *hint* Yes, I'm a Cedar Point fanboy as well, and I can defend the park as I wish, as I have been there many times. I really couldn't care less about the advertising, or who has the most operating rides, or the most rides. Parks are parks, get over it people! Now for the short sermon of the day.... " All parks are created equal for the right of the people to be amuesed, now you are dismissed in the name of entertainment, fun, and enjoyment. "
I actualy applaud all of you for your passion for Morey's, Cedar Point, and SFGAdventure. THAT is one main reason that those 3 parks continually do more than 3 million guests a year rain or shine.

You are all bashing each other over numbers that only are such, numbers. Great Adventure has a great Safari and Hurrican Harbor. Cedar Point is on the lake and has incredible coasters. Morey's is on a great Boardwalk, is oceanfront, and has atmosphere. All bring that something to the table that all of you should seek out and visit.

By the way, ACE was invited to Moreys for ERT on AtmosFear, with ERT time added to the Great NorEaster and the Great White, and lunch in Jumbos Seafood on the Boardwalk. plus a evening of 3 piers of rides for only $45. What a bargain. You guys should all meet there, kiss and make up. Even you Jeff. I owe you some beers anyway. *** Edited 5/11/2005 5:40:43 PM UTC by Agent Johnson***

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, that sounds like fun. I can definitely enjoy some ERT on Great White. The Great Pink ScrapIron on the other hand can sit and rust for all I care.

Watch the tram car please....
When is the event, Agent Johnson? I would love to attend... ERT on Morey's two "Great" coasters is definitely something to get excited about (yes, I am a Great Nor'easter fanboy).
The entire ACE got the invite for the Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day weekend.

I think it was Gonch that couldn't understand the enthusiast POV of having to numeralize everything, staticize (a word?) everthing, etc.

Yes, it was.

And I still don't. :)

I'm not interested enough to read the entire thread, but...

Exactly my point. I don't understand why it's so hard for some people to accept the fact that Cedar Point is wrong from time to time.
It's not a matter of acceptance, it's a matter of most people really not caring very much. We're not fighting cancer or going for world peace here. Your argument flirts with the ridiculousness of what constitutes a bona fide inversion.

Most people don't care.

Most people don't care???? Why did this thread jump to four pages? Why did you respond almost immediately. Hmmm???? Couldn't be, could it?

So far I've seen three, maybe four people who even give a crap about this non-issue. A couple of them give several craps, it seems. It's peculiar, however, that even with all the crap given, the rods are still firmly stuck in there pretty good. :)

All in fun, folks...

I think you guys are missing the point. We are constantly being bombarded by advertising. Some estimates say on average, a typical person consciously or subconsiously experiences 300 marketing messages each day.

The entire point of advertisements in general is to manipulate you into spending money on something. Is it ethical for a company to knowingly put false information in their ads? Sure, most people don't care if a certain park has the most rides in the world but if you experience their ads enough, you'll start to believe it.

How many people would, if given the choice, buy Bayer over an in-house generic brand of aspirin? Though, by law both products are required to have the exact same ingrediants.

Whether you are a fanboy or not is irrelevant to the point being made: companies SHOULD NOT use false information in their marketing campaign no matter how insignificant the factoid is.

Regardless of claims I'll tell you this, I live in Southeastern Pa and worked at dorney for a few years, a few years ago, Cedar Point is not a household name In this area, Where wildwood is. The difference is cedar point and wildwood are reaching to 2 completly different markets. Now before the junkies get on me, just because cedar point isnt a household name in Southeastern Pa , does not means it isnt a superior park. They just dont target business from south east pa and south jersey. I agree with the saying statistics are meant to lie. My perspective, ride count dont matter. If you want the shore and boardwalk , go to the piers, if you want giga and higher, cedar points the place for you, case closed :)

It seams pretty clear to me that Morey's Piers is actually three parks, regardless whether or not they are managed from one office. You have to leave one pier to get the the next pier, you never have to leave CP to get to any of the 68 rides.

If some of you think that is a technicality because the piers are close together than so be it. But the fact is that the piers are not connected together so CP's claim is true.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks, than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Morey's has a high ride count, but more than half of them are for the kiddies.

Here's To Shorter Lines & Longer Trip Reports!

Well some of you may not consider Morey's pier as legitimate competition, but Six Flags Great Adventure does have more rides than Cedar Point. Now, I don't know about you guys, but I'd consider Six Flags Great Adventure another regional park, rendering Cedar Point's claims false.

Oh, and I thougth I'd just end the debate now, Guinness' website has Great Adventure ahaed of CP. GA has a total of 71 permanent mechanical rides. So lets end this sillyness now :) *** Edited 5/12/2005 4:48:27 AM UTC by ToTfreak***

Tower of Terror is one of the best rides ever created by man.
