DDR bug has hit hard

I don't think there's anything *but* an all-music mode!

I just looked up some info on unlocking songs, and apparently, Max 300 unlocks after you clear 100 songs (or, 100 heavy songs, some sites said). They all said that to get Candy, you have to pass the Max 300 "extra stage" that I referred to above, which is near impossible, so Jeff, if you have Candy obviously there's another way to get it.

btw, I know this has been mentioned before, but the video that plays during Rhythm and Police is the one that's supposed to go with Telephone Operator (in the arcade only). It totally doesn't match up... makes it pretty funny.

In order to unlock Max 300, you need to pass 100 songs on ANY difficulty level. To unlock Candy, there are two ways; one is to pass 200 songs on any difficulty, the other is pass Candy with several modifiers after you have AA Max 300 as an extra stage. The song, Spin the Disc, is unlocked after 250 songs are passed and finally, to unlock the last song, Drop the Bomb~System S.F. Mix, you need to pass 500 (yes, 500) songs on any difficulty level, or complete the hardcore oni level. Keep in mind that songs passed from the workout mode, oni levels, etc, do not count your completed song total.

That's a good idea for unlocks. It rewards skill, or, if you don't have it, persistance.

Does anyone know what the shortest song on max is?

Yeah, but I thought 500 songs to unlock DTB:SSFM was a bit much, as Hardcore oni is next to impossible to complete. The only way I could do that is with a controller instead of my feet, and who wants to resort to cheating?

Kinda hate to abruptly change the subject, but does anybody know if the Dave and Busters in Utica(?) Michigan has a DDR machine? ...turns out I'm going there today :-/

(Edit: Checked DDRFreak... not listed...)

I don't think 500 songs is that unreasonable. I've played nearly that many on Konamix. It gives you a long-term goal to look forward to, at least.

MRider - I don't know for sure, but I think D&B in general is more of a Pump It Up kind of place. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most D&B's now have this game, not DDR.

Well there you have it. I don't see Drop the Bomb being that far away from being unlocked, especially if I keep on the diet (aside from being sick last week, I've generally been playing an hour or more a day, which is about 30 song/hour).

It's just too bad that the online culture of some of the hardcore players is so lame and juvenile.

The same could be said of the coaster community...so I wouldn't talk...

(BTW... play Pop 'n Music and Drummania...they're a lot more fun...)

Wow Jeff--you weren't kidding about the DDR bug hittin' you hard! An hour a day is alot of DDR! No wonder I still suck....I only play for 15-30 minutes 3X per week :( Really no excuse though since it is winter in Michigan and there isn't much else to do......
What about 3 hours?

Yeah, I did three hours back in the day when I first started learning. I had plenty of stamina for the easy songs. It's quite another thing when you try Paranoia Max, Orion and Max300 all in a row.

One of the reasons my son was happy I began playing is I helped unlock Candy (200 games).

Since I've been off work for the holiday break, I've put in at least an hour a day playing DDR. Even when I'm working, I try to play a couple nights a week. It's paying off in that I can now pass some songs in standard mode, including some of the harder ones (for me) like Sandstorm (I love that song).

Chris - CRAP! I was at my parents' house all weekend, just a short drive from Beavercreek. I thought we'd start seeing Extreme in March at the earliest. Can you give us a review?

Well, I didn't take the picture in question, but I did get to play it today. DDREX is like MAX with a ton more songs and a few new/returning features. I'll have a picture of me next to the machine sometime soon to prove it. :) (Sean F will have to verify that it's me though....)

Anyway, lets start with modes. Light, Standard, Heavy, and ONI return. ONI has about 2-3X more courses than MAX2 did, most of them are difficult (compared to say Nearly 130 or Naoki Standard). Two new additions are the returning Beginner mode (1-3 foot songs I believe, where the animated character shows you where to step) and Nonstop mode (thing ONI course with a life bar instead of a battery). 6 modes total.

Song selection is great. We counted 236 songs initially playable, with a good number of unlockables. Unfortunately we didn't unlock a thing, but it was only its first day of full operation. Of course song tastes will vary by person, but if you have DWI or Stepmania (free to d/l, just ask about it), you can download some DWIs of EX songs at www.Bemanistyle.com . My suggestions: We Will Rock You (slow, but fun), Cartoon Heroes (EX's version of Blondie Girl), and 321 Stars. There are a LOT of remixes, some of which include new twists on Matsuri Japan, Tsugaru, and others. If you like the songs on DDRMAX for PS2, well you have those songs here too (Love This Feelin, Celebrate, So In Love to name a few). You can even sort the list by the game the song comes from (Para Para Paradise, IIDX, Beatmania, etc). The new 'Survivor's are evil (both Paranoia and Trip Machine), but 'bag' (new song by Re-venge) is easy for a 10 footer. It's just hard to read because it's 65 BPM, so just turn on 3X in the options and it's fine (from what I heard from Maniac players, of which I am not). Otherwise, you have to experiment with the songs of your liking.

There is a new step called Marvellous which is higher than a Perfect, but you only get Marvellous steps when playing an ONI or Nonstop course, not during the regular game.

The Danger screen comes complete with a shark chasing you, mouth opening and closing as you get closer to death.

It is still DDR though. Nothing groundbreaking. But it does give fans what they want, a boatload of more, more, more.

If there's anything else I can remember, I'll post it.

That sounds very cool... it really is the number and variety of songs that make each version better than the previous. Any word on what the upgrade kit for that machine costs? Not that I'm gonna buy a machine or anything, just curious. ;)

Thanks for the review on DDREX Chris...from some screen shots that I had seen earlier last week on www.ddrfreak.com, I could tell the game would be jam packed with songs...Did you notice if there was a spot for a memory card? Sounds and looks like more of the same, which is fine by me; maybe this release should have been named DDRMAX3... And as much as I hate to say it, (and may get flamed over it) I think DDREX is the last ddr arcade game we will see released...

Where would you buy the pad thingy you dance on? Ive looked everywhere and can't find one. Bestbuy,Circuit City,ect.....

Jeff: $2795 at Coin-op Express, but they're always outrageous in pricing when it comes to DDR.

The person who got it for WSU paid around 2 grand.

PunkSka: Try your local GameStop (www.gamestop.com for locations), they usually have cheap ($20-30) dance pads for PSone/PS2.

pokeyron: The memory card slot is probably from something like a 5th mix machine, just upgraded with eX software. (I think, I haven't read through everything on this page)

Replying to myself, there are Pump It Up machines at the Dave and Busters I went to tonight. Unfortunately I only found them when I left :(

I wanna play DDReX....

Actually the machine at WSU DOES have memory card slots, and it DOES accept edits made on the home versions. But, of course, you can only use edits for the songs that are shared for both machines. (IE, you can create a step chart for Paranoia at home and use it in the arcade, but you can't for, say, We Will Rock You, because it's on DDREX only (and not a home version)).

-Chris

Oh yeah.... me and the machine.... (I'm the one in all black on the right who looks way to old to be playing this thing.)

Edit: Sorry, link didn't work like I planned. Try: http://www.ohioddr.com/ddrextreme/8thmix.html

Pic labeled... 'OhioDDR group shot'.
