Though I've tried very hard to resist getting on a DDR machine (that's Dance Dance Revolution, if you didn't know), STchick Kara (car-uh) dragged me on Friday night. Sure enough, Saturday, I did it again... four times.
First two levels I can kick ass, no problem. Thereafter I have a hard time. So for you experienced folk, how long did it take you to "get it?"

It took my brother almost one afternoon at the park to "get it." We rode the rides while he played. He got so addicted to the damn thing, that he bought the DDR home version, and the dance pad.

About A week and a half until I started maniac. At least 3 hours of practice every day. Right now the only maniac I can't get at least a b on is maxx unlimited/300. Here's a step by step guide to construct your very own metal arcade style dance pad. http://www.angelfire.com/d20/ddrhomepad/
Edit: I have every japanese release and a mod chip. And my metal arcade-like pads. The Us versions are terrible IMO.

Lessee... I started about 3 months ago. Tried a 4-footer basic song first (Holic) and passed (barely).
About two months ago I bought a PSX and Konamix and a metal pad from eBay. I would like to play more but as it stands I get in about 2-3 hours a week, along with one or two sessions a month in the arcades.
At this point I can do most of the harder trick songs (like Drop Out) and get a B or higher, and there's a few maniac songs I've been working on (.59, Cutie Chaser, Wild Rush, Higher) that I can do pretty well now.
About the DDR bug... man - I dream of arrows. This is the most obsessed I've been with a video game since Tetris.

Welcome to a whole new world of addiction Jeff! Which machine did you play? If you played the one at CP, then just you wait until you play a newer machine. =:^)

For me, I never really got into playing trick and maniac songs until a few months ago. I did basic for probably 6 months or so before I decided to "move up" and go for something harder like Afronova trick and Drop Out trick. There are still a lot of songs I can't pass in maniac.
Also, I am not one of those players that feels the need to do freestyle stuff. The funny thing is, I don't care for dancing or the music in the game, but I love that game. I don't think the game is about dancing more than it is about rhythm, and I love rhythm so the game appeals to me.
I have the two American versions of DDR for Playstation, and plan on getting the DDR Max for PS2 next month when it comes out. I would suggest getting the home version and purchasing a good pad. If you can do the songs at home, then the arcade will probably be much easier for you.
Check out www.ddrfreak.com for some very cool info about the game.
Dennis, let's go play some place again.

Kyle, you just made my whole weekend!
VF doesn't have DDR, but a knockoff (Pump the Premiere some-odd something). Nevertheless, looking it over gave me the itch to buy a home version and practice over the winter. I was trying to decide between a PSOne or PS2.
I guess all I'll need now are pads and a USB adapter, right?

Please be aware it is illegal to download songs for emulators which you have not purchased on their respective games...
I've been playing for about 6 weeks. I waited to try the arcade version when it was empty so I didn't make an azz of myself. I liked it and I bought the PSOne version and some cheapo Ebay pads, and six weeks later, I can pass most level 6-7 songs, and Max Combo almost everything up to level 4.

(a) There is a strange correlation between coaster nuts an DDRs, (b) What does Jeff's Grass have to do with coasters?, and (c) I'm not a moderator so I'll shut up now.

If you have to preface anything you say with that statement, you're probably being an asshole. I'm getting really tired of seeing this crap. Go with the flow set by myself and the moderators or just go away. There are far greater things to worry about in the world than what some guy you don't even know is doing with his stupid Web site.
Anyway, didn't realize there were so many players out there. It's almost freaky to see how big the DDR sub-culture is.

Get me out of this air-conditioned nightmare!
Just wait Jeff until you get into DDR's tournament culture, if you ever go that route...
I played in my 4th yesterday (Middletown, OH), and had a great time, even if I did come in third (note: I'm mostly high end basic/light to mid level trick/standard, and would probably be more proficient at it had I not taken up 'Pump It Up' first, which I'm more comfortable with). It is extremely addicting.
BTW, for all the PKI players... one of the games supervisors there who is heavy into DDR has been in contact with main management about getting 7th (or by next season's opening, 8th) mix, and it might be a strong possibility for next year. Personally, I'll believe it when I see it, but then again, I'll take anything over Dancing Stage. (and no, he doesn't sell Lemon Chills on the side :) )
