DDR bug has hit hard

Jeff's avatar

Though I've tried very hard to resist getting on a DDR machine (that's Dance Dance Revolution, if you didn't know), STchick Kara (car-uh) dragged me on Friday night. Sure enough, Saturday, I did it again... four times.

First two levels I can kick ass, no problem. Thereafter I have a hard time. So for you experienced folk, how long did it take you to "get it?"

It took my brother almost one afternoon at the park to "get it." We rode the rides while he played. He got so addicted to the damn thing, that he bought the DDR home version, and the dance pad.

I satrted ona 2step..which I failed. Now I am working on 7steps and I go to our malls arcade( witha 5th mix) once a week for the last few months.
WHen I started I was OK. After about two visits to a 5th Mix machine I am now good at it. I bought the DDR Konamix PS Game and teh pad. I just got finished from playing it now.

It took me a few days to really get decent at DDR. Then I practiced more and more and I am doing 6 steps now.

About A week and a half until I started maniac. At least 3 hours of practice every day. Right now the only maniac I can't get at least a b on is maxx unlimited/300. Here's a step by step guide to construct your very own metal arcade style dance pad. http://www.angelfire.com/d20/ddrhomepad/

Edit: I have every japanese release and a mod chip. And my metal arcade-like pads. The Us versions are terrible IMO.

Lessee... I started about 3 months ago. Tried a 4-footer basic song first (Holic) and passed (barely).

About two months ago I bought a PSX and Konamix and a metal pad from eBay. I would like to play more but as it stands I get in about 2-3 hours a week, along with one or two sessions a month in the arcades.

At this point I can do most of the harder trick songs (like Drop Out) and get a B or higher, and there's a few maniac songs I've been working on (.59, Cutie Chaser, Wild Rush, Higher) that I can do pretty well now.

About the DDR bug... man - I dream of arrows. This is the most obsessed I've been with a video game since Tetris.

Time for a bad joke chain....

You know you're a ddr addict when.....

You suddenly relate everyone to a ddr character.

Continue the logic.

I never venture into arcades much at amusement parks since I can always play video games at home. After hearing all the fuss about DDR I had to try it (not in a park, but in a mall). I played one game and completely sucked since I had no idea what I was doing. I left it at that, but I'm sure I'll give it another shot sometime.

Welcome to a whole new world of addiction Jeff! Which machine did you play? If you played the one at CP, then just you wait until you play a newer machine. =:^)

For me, I never really got into playing trick and maniac songs until a few months ago. I did basic for probably 6 months or so before I decided to "move up" and go for something harder like Afronova trick and Drop Out trick. There are still a lot of songs I can't pass in maniac.

Also, I am not one of those players that feels the need to do freestyle stuff. The funny thing is, I don't care for dancing or the music in the game, but I love that game. I don't think the game is about dancing more than it is about rhythm, and I love rhythm so the game appeals to me.

I have the two American versions of DDR for Playstation, and plan on getting the DDR Max for PS2 next month when it comes out. I would suggest getting the home version and purchasing a good pad. If you can do the songs at home, then the arcade will probably be much easier for you.

Check out www.ddrfreak.com for some very cool info about the game.

Dennis, let's go play some place again.

DDR Max for ps2 will be pathetic. (IMO) Get a modchip and get the japanese version. DDR Max2 for ps2 will be coming out in japan shortly.

DDR emulator for PC. Great program.

Oh, and it took me 3 games.

Kyle, you just made my whole weekend!

VF doesn't have DDR, but a knockoff (Pump the Premiere some-odd something). Nevertheless, looking it over gave me the itch to buy a home version and practice over the winter. I was trying to decide between a PSOne or PS2.

I guess all I'll need now are pads and a USB adapter, right?

Please be aware it is illegal to download songs for emulators which you have not purchased on their respective games...

I've been playing for about 6 weeks. I waited to try the arcade version when it was empty so I didn't make an azz of myself. I liked it and I bought the PSOne version and some cheapo Ebay pads, and six weeks later, I can pass most level 6-7 songs, and Max Combo almost everything up to level 4.

Not to be an a**hole, but I've seen threads that had more to do with coasters than this one be closed for "marginal" reasons... exactly what does DDR have to do with coasters?

(a) There is a strange correlation between coaster nuts an DDRs, (b) What does Jeff's Grass have to do with coasters?, and (c) I'm not a moderator so I'll shut up now.

Well, I started in in August. Since then I've got the pad a nd game at home, with $150 stainless steel pad coming in the mail any day now. Since me and my friends started playing we ussually start on trick now, eventually were gonna get up to maniac. I live within 25 minutees of 3...yes 3 DDR Max2 7th mix machines, so we ussually make the "journey" to play every weekend for a few hours.

If you have to preface anything you say with that statement, you're probably being an asshole. I'm getting really tired of seeing this crap. Go with the flow set by myself and the moderators or just go away. There are far greater things to worry about in the world than what some guy you don't even know is doing with his stupid Web site.

Anyway, didn't realize there were so many players out there. It's almost freaky to see how big the DDR sub-culture is.

I've seen them at every big public place there is, and have never played one time. I feel like it'd embarres the hell out of me, being white and all. LOL. I think i'll try it next time i'm at the local mall or DL.

Get me out of this air-conditioned nightmare!

Just wait Jeff until you get into DDR's tournament culture, if you ever go that route...

I played in my 4th yesterday (Middletown, OH), and had a great time, even if I did come in third (note: I'm mostly high end basic/light to mid level trick/standard, and would probably be more proficient at it had I not taken up 'Pump It Up' first, which I'm more comfortable with). It is extremely addicting.

BTW, for all the PKI players... one of the games supervisors there who is heavy into DDR has been in contact with main management about getting 7th (or by next season's opening, 8th) mix, and it might be a strong possibility for next year. Personally, I'll believe it when I see it, but then again, I'll take anything over Dancing Stage. (and no, he doesn't sell Lemon Chills on the side :) )
