Ok, for all you Ohio DDR-philes (Jeff, Sean, me ,etc.)
Wright State University's (Dayton, OH off of I-675 - I can post directions if need be.) student union now has DDR Extreme (3 songs / $.50 / no joint premium). I know the gentleman who bought the machine, and he informed me it's there for the playing.
Here's a picture....

Happy DDRing.

Holy crap, I wasn't aware that machine had even been released yet! Very cool.
I saw Def Leppard at the Nutter Center at Wright State circa 1993. Shortly thereafter I never listened to them again!

CPLady - when did I say I would never pass maniacs? I'm not sure if I'll ever pass Max 300 or the catas, but the 8-footers are no problem.
Chris - CRAP! I was at my parents' house all weekend, just a short drive from Beavercreek. I thought we'd start seeing Extreme in March at the earliest. Can you give us a review?
I finally got DDRMAX for my new PS2 yesterday. First impression is that the music (at least the songs you start out with) doesn't appeal to me as much as Konamix, but I just started so it will probably change. The songs I like, I *really* like. The Cube is great, and Love This Feelin' is an incredible song with really cool steps (at least in standard).
I noticed right away that the arrows scroll much more smoothly than Konamix. The backgrounds are cool, too, and the interface is 110% better.
I opened the "extra stage" after about 2 hours of playing, by getting an AA on Cutie Chaser heavy. All I could do was stare as the game forced me to play Max 300 heavy with down-scrolling arrows. I lost in like 3 seconds.

You know, the "information" on Max doesn't seem to make any sense. It talks about the "encore stage" and an extra stage after that, and I can assure you I've never done anything special to unclock those (if indeed they refer to Max300 and Candy). I've unlocked all but one song, as best I can tell, and somehow I'm guessing it requires a AAA. Best I've been able to do is 40 perfects of the 41 steps on that lame ass Remember You song.

I don't think there's anything *but* an all-music mode!
I just looked up some info on unlocking songs, and apparently, Max 300 unlocks after you clear 100 songs (or, 100 heavy songs, some sites said). They all said that to get Candy, you have to pass the Max 300 "extra stage" that I referred to above, which is near impossible, so Jeff, if you have Candy obviously there's another way to get it.
btw, I know this has been mentioned before, but the video that plays during Rhythm and Police is the one that's supposed to go with Telephone Operator (in the arcade only). It totally doesn't match up... makes it pretty funny. :)

Just for some real fun, check out the step chart for Max300 in heavy mode. That's right kids, 722 steps, which averages to about 8 per second. Can any human really do that?
The "information" now shows all but one song of the 33+ not unlocked, something in the late 20's in that numbering scheme. A AAA has to be possible. If I can do 140 perfects out of 170 on some songs, one day I will get that perfect 41 on Remember You!

I think I could do the last 5 measures pretty easily! ;)

I can do it with the 1.5x speed modifier turned on. It pulls the arrows apart a little bit and then somehow it makes more sense to me.
I was playing in the arcade the other day and AA'd Matsuri Japan Heavy third song and got the MAX2 extra stage, Maxx Unlimited Heavy reverse dark. I got 40 seconds through it (yes it tells you at the end how far you got if it's extra stage). Some hard stuff...
-----------------
When you get the extra stage Maxx 300 in DDRMAX, it is 1.5x, so Natalie, you are in luck. Kudos to you, btw, I have tried Matsuri Japan heavy about 100 times, at home and in the arcade, and have never passed it. I always fail about 10 seconds from the end. :(

Matsuri Japan is a pretty long song by DDR standards, getting 10 seconds from the end would be passing a few other songs...I'll bet I know the one part that might mess you up. There's a part where you have to do a turn to hit the 3 arrows properly and it goes LRL, that's the part that was keeping me from AAing it when I first started playing it. Just keep plugging away, you'll figure it out!

That's probably part of it, but I think the main problem is that after the break, when it goes back and forth between two measures of eighth-notes and two measures of gallops, my stamina (mind and body) just goes away and I can't hit those gallops anymore.

Den said: Heh. Well I'm hoping to learn all the maniac/heavy DDR songs before I turn 30 and become decrepit and senile
What I meant, Den, is that at my age (definitely over 30, although I am far from decrepit and senile), I doubt that *I* will ever pass maniac.
My son and I were playing one day and unlocked Candy. We've both had some AAA's, although mine have only been on light mode.
