Worst coaster investments?

  • Any Vekoma Boomerang or SLC ever built.
  • Celebration City's Miler built Jack Rabbit
  • Adventureland's CCI built Underground
  • Adventureland's OH Hopkins built Dragon
  • SFMM's Intamin built Superman: the Escape
  • Knott's Berry Farm's Togo built Windjammer

That's enough for now

Iron Dragon at CP
What's wrong with Iron Dragon? (as far as an investment is concerned)
There's no mistaking it for SFMM's Ninja or PKI's Top Gun...but it wasn't so bad for its time. Trains aren't falling off and landing in the fish moat. People still get in line and ride it. Nobody's stumbling off in pain. What's wrong with it?

NOTE: Severe fecal impaction may render the above words highly debatable.

To me, CP made a bad investment with Top Thrill Dragster! It's first two years it spent just as much time broken down as it did running. It took a huge chunk of space, (and NO I'm not one of those people who thinks CP is running out of space!).

All of the records it had are now being broken in New Jersey. And as each new season dawns it's going to be forgotten a little more, (even though you can see it's bright yellow paint from five miles away.)

Don't get me wrong I've ridden it many times, and have been thrilled every time, but that 25 mill. could've been put to so much more at CP. But hey, that my opinion.

I, for one, can't wait for the Italian Job to open...looks awesome to me!

I would have to say Timberhawk at Wild Waves/Enchanted Village in Federal Way ,WA. I had such high hopes for this coaster while it was under construction and it turned out to be a dud. I am sure the locals will quickly get bored with this one.

Lets' bring back Portland,Oregons' Jantzen Beach Big Dipper(1928-1970)Oregon needs some good wood!

Guests stand in awe at [TTD]

Isn't that the truth. My nephew refused to ride anything more interesting than CCMR during his time spent with us there last year, but practically drooled just watching TTD fire. He (somewhat surprisingly) volunteered that he *really* wanted to go back to CP with us this summer and that he'd spent the whole winter thinking about TTD. (!)

I have another one...

Although it's not at any amusement park, MY worst coaster investment was the K'Nex roller coaster. The instructions were crap, making it a chore to build. And once it was built, the stupid car never had enough speed to make it all the way around the track. After doing a little research online, I found that many other people also had problems getting it to go around and the best solution is to buy a second K'Nex roller coaster and use the parts to increase the height of the hill. HAH!

While thinking of a witty comeback to Beast Tamer about Iron Dragon, it occured to me that the original suspended coaster was probably a bad investment for Arrow since if rumors hold true, it was supposed to invert, but the tubs broke off the train when it tried to navigate a corkscrew.

But since that was never supposed to go to a specific park, what about that one SW project at Alton from Arrow that was never built and eventually turned into Nemesis? Didn't Alton put a lot of money into it and the pipeline concept really never got out of Arrow's testing process? And of course, then they had to spend the money on Nemesis, although that one probably counts as one of the BEST coaster investements.

Oh and for that witty comeback:

Iron Dragon's a bad investment because it's at Cedar Point and it's not Son of Beast! I mean come on, you couldn't see that one on your own? What's wrong with you people?!?

Ok Beast Tamer, I dont mean to be harsh or offend your favorite coaster in any way. But when I ride a coaster wooden or steel, I want to be able to enjoy every minute of it. With SOB, I cant do that because I get thrown all around and as I said before in one of my previous posts, I felt my lower lumbar region in my back compress. Coasters are not supposed to be built like that and unfortunately SOB was. I just totally dislike that heaping pile of wood because if you have read news reports from the previous years, people have actually come off that thing with broken necks and other serious injuries just like my fiance crazy horse. When we rode it last his knees banged up against those stupid lap bars and were so badly banged up they were bleeding. I hope this answers your question. Once again i dont mean to be harsh in any way or offend your favorite coaster, but this is my opinion and im stickin to it.

To this day I still feel some discomfort in my back, I never had that problem till I rode that thing last November. I know you like that ride but I dont. As I said before and ill say it again, I want to enjoy a ride pain free.

Im sorry to say this, but you are one crazy human being to be able to withstand all that pain and torture what crazy horse and I call "Son of Chiropractor". I know I needed one after my last ride on that.

Like i said earlier when you are the best people take shots at you. SoB are like the yankees, the ride or team that you love to hate cause they are that damn good!

Yup. You have us all figured out. There's a couple dozen people here who refuse to ride (or rarely ride) SOB because they secretly like it.

It was so obvious.

Might I direct you to the single most respected wooden coaster poll done today.

I'll even simplify the numbers for you.

In 2004, there were 433 voters ranking a total of 176 wooden roller coasters. The average voter in the poll has ridden more than 33 wooden roller coasters.

Son Of Beast placed at #167 - 9 away from being deemed the worst wooden coaster in the world. In fact, it has never placed higher than #131. There is not another wooden coaster in existence built in the last 5 years that has ranked as low as consistently.

Everyone's opinion is valid. You like the ride. Goodie for you. The masses hate it. Enthusiasts hate it so much that they called it one of the 10 worst wooden coasters on Earth in 2004.

...but you're right - they all secretly love it...the bastards.

Scream, X - Six Flags Magic Mountain.

Okay, fine, Six Flags Magic Mountain PERIOD. A perfectly good waste of good amusement park land potential!

How can you think that? Have you ever been there?

Let me guess....you are 12 years old and a Cedar Point fan?

Since this is an *investment* thread and not a ride quality thread, I have to disagree with those naming TimberHawk af SFEV. Sure, this ride is *lame and tame*, but I'll betcha that the waterpark has NEVER been busier...

Much like DB Hurricane, the success of the ride financially depends more on getting butts INTO the park rather than ON the ride. Yes, DBH is an *infinitely* better ride, but most of the people at Boomers! wouldn't know it cuz they don't ride....they're there for the arcade instead of a waterpark (hmmmmm, LOL), but the wooden coaster DOES bring people in....by the buttload!

It's funny what some people consider bad investments. I wonder what the parks actually consider bad.

Mean Streak- come on it's been there almost 15 years. I'm sure they have more than recouped their investment

TTD- will be pulling in guests for years to come no matter how many Kingda Kas open

Iron Dragon- see Mean Streak

My choices

Deja Vu- any one of them but especially the Georgia model. Any bets on how long before these rides are put on the ride rotation program or retired

Wind Jammer- any ride that sits on valueble land without operating then is destroyed without any compensation is a bad investment

Drachen Fire- same as Wind Jammmer and its real estate still isn't making that park money hint hint nice quiet kiddie area Busch hint hint

As for a woodie where Disaster Transport is, the only clone that needs to be there is a modern version of their old Cyclone that once stood in the area. Wouldn't that be neat to see an older park like that go back into its history and bring a coaster back to life

Deja Vu, and their likenesses. What a waste of money.

Fun, albeit short, experience for the rider. Terrible investment, dead track, major structural repairs, downtime from hell.... etc. etc. etc. for the park. I can't think of a bigger money loser for a park, personally.

The Flying Turns makes all the right people wet - Gonch

Jhon13601, I remember reading that BGW put some kind of kids camp or something in DF's old spot. If whatever it is makes money for the park, than it's not wasted.

DF was a bad investment because it stood there inoperable for years. It was designed and built, redesigned, and then closed-THEN it had to be removed; all of which needed funded. What a shame to, because I realy liked it.

SOB was a pretty bad investment, because for a new, record-breaking coaster, it doesn't have the fans PKI intended. It's not a huge draw for the park like they wanted it to be. My favorite park builds america's least favorite coaster; how ironic.

Dexter I remeber that there was supposed to be some kind of camp there too but I think it was for educational days and I don't know if they still do it.

I calling for an all out kiddie area, bigger than land of dragons, maybe themed to the Grimm fairy tales or something. A kiddie coaster would be nice too since Busch Gardens doesn't have one
