Why is Coasterbuzz advertising Porn?

And just to back Jeff's theory that the net won't always be free (the quality stuff at least) I point you to photo.net - the photography enthusiast equivalent of coasterbuzz. There's currently a whole discussion taking place there on what new features would entice more people to pay. In general there seems to be more understanding but I still find it surprising that so many people feel they deserve something for free. There's many of the same issues floating around there. It's getting closer, the biggest and the best will have to switch up the way they do things soon. I'm anixious to see how it all pans out.

...Still wondering why you're complaining about a fixable problem, Jeff...

And exactly what problem are you talking about, and what solution is that?

Gonchar: That's an interesting story. I've watched the same topic come up at countless sites I've visited over the years (including photo.net). What do these sites have in common? Almost all are community-based sites. They all have been around for many years, they all have thousands of members, they all have ridiculous expenses, and none of them can make money from advertising.

Let's face it, the people who produce these sites don't do it to be rich (since we're obviously not making any money), we do it because we love our subject matter.

Being a professional programmer and Internet guy, I've taken a step further, at an expense of tens of thousands of dollars over the last three years. I have dedicated hardware. I have a T-1 just off of Sprint's backbone. I'll take the Pepsi Challenge to any site in terms of availability and speed, and I'll win. Why? Because if you're going to do it, do it right.

If this were 1999, I'd net probably $2,500 a month easily and members would attend events for free. No joke.

The next year will be a real crossroads. Now we get to see just how valuable people find the things they're interested in. If they don't see the value, then the content they love just won't be around anymore.

Jeff:

What SFNE Freak is talking about is a pop-up block blocker (i don't know what they're called). Therefore, with one of these mechanisms, this could be a "fixable problem."

And personally, the software to block people using blockers already exists, and I've thought about using it.

This is nothing new. You really should practice reading before posting.

Thank you once again Playa' for posting something that does not get us anywhere.

Jeff has thought about using one. That's all he's said. We would all like to know why he wouldn't.

I think what SFNE Freak is asking is "why not?"

-----------------

Rentzy: Who needs an education about software that denies blocker access--a Webmaster with a spate of hot P4s and plenty of coding experience or dial-up boy on his wheezing secondhand PC? I mean really.

I think we all know which post had nothing to add. Thanks for continually proving how correct my conclusion about you was.

'Playa: Are you talkin' about me or Rentzy in that last post? If you're talking about me I have DSL, a laptop purchased with my life savings before this summer, and more internet knowledge than some people on this site.

Sorry if you weren't talking about me, but you weren't very specific as to whom that post was regarding.

[edit]- Jeff: I'm aware that you know about the software but why do you whine about your ad revenue when there is a chance of an increase with the installation of ad-killing blockers. Makes no sense. And I don't see how you could miss two or more posts from me about the exact same thing that you have failed to answer.

It makes perfect sense! I can't create ad revenue from thin air. The tool wouldn't do enough good to offset its cost for one thing, and second, there isn't enough out there in the first place. The point is that the blockers make a bad situation worse.

So back to a question that I asked earlier. (Playa': I looked in back posts and didn't see this question answered so don't bite my head off.)

Jeff: What is your view on making this an all pay site? Do you think too many people would leave? I think it would be very successful.

-----------------

Jeff's avatar

I don't think it would be. You've got to offer something to get people there in the first place. This site's content is driven by its members, paying and otherwise. It certainly couldn't feed off of 300 people.

How is it our responsibility to pay for your site? You're the webmaster, you should pay for it yourself. We're just here to help out if we want to.

That post scared me. Why? Because after I read it I expected the page to disappear. If I was Jeff reading that, I would immediately hit the X button on this site. Why should Jeff pay for "his" site? This is our site. While I'm sure he loves the site, he does it for us. Show a little appreciation. And your example sucked.

This is just a thought. I don't know if its been mentioned. Why not try cafepress to make some money of merchindise. I know its cruddy quality and they take most of it. It may be some why to bring in some money.

Not really bad quality...I ordered stuff off of there from my own site and it looked just oerfect to me.

Last time I sold shirts I sold about 60 at a 25% margin. I made a couple hundred bucks over the course of the year, which is decidedly not $1,200 per month. To do the same on Cafepress, I'd have to price T-shirts at $30. Are you going to buy a $30 shirt for a Web site? I'm guessing no.
