Tears for Fears or PKI

Wow. Never thought I'd see a Tears for Fears thread on Coasterbuzz. Considering TFF is my favorite band, I'd bypass any chance to visit any amusement park to see them play. No, Oleta Adams isn't doing anything with TFF anymore. TFF discovered her when she was singing in a hotel bar in Kansas City in '85, has come a long way because of them, and stays busy doing her own thing now. Roland produced her first CD (and co-wrote Rhythm of Life, which was supposed to end up on TFF's Seeds of Love). I enjoyed the R&B style tracks they did together back in the day, but am glad they choose not to do that now. BTW, you may or may not know Oleta sung on a track on TFF's Raoul and the Kings of Spain. I have quite a few CDs and VHS's of rare TFF stuff if anyone is interested.

Anyone who think's the TFF tour is just 80's nostalgia probably hasn't heard the new CD. It really is a great album. Roland is a musical genious, and he and Curt combined are just hard to beat. Our most popular AC/progressive station here in Nashville has been playing the two TFF singles quite a bit.

I'm very pleased with the new Duran Duran album and DVD too. I have been lucky enough to seen them play a couple times (2nd row!). I did like Pop Trash a lot. I hope they put the rest of their VHS/laserdisc releases to DVD. BTW, I have the Duran and TFF TV appearances recorded if you want them.

And you know Flock of Seagulls recently reunited for some shows, right? As did Kajagoogoo.

FLYINGSCOOTER, I met Kip Winger last year! Yeah I like Winger. :) Their guitarist is touring with Whitesnake right now.

Mamoosh, radio has basically abandonded all of the 80's bands short of Bon Jovi (yuk).

I never got into Erasure much, even with the tie to one of my other top favs, Depeche Mode.

Crowded House! I've got all the CH CD's/DVD, TV footage etc., but never got to see them, though did see/meet Tim Finn. If you liked Crowded House, check out the new Finn Brothers CD. The single is on heavy rotation on the radio here. www.finnbros.net

Crap, told myself I wouldn't get carried away (& still did).

-Brian, an 80's music junkie (~700 CDs, at least half 80's).

Yup, that's me.......an 80's music junkie, and yes, I met Winger as well, among others......Bon Jovi, Cinderella (still one of my faves), Great White, Badlands, Slaughter, LA Guns.....I will have to dig out my "scrapbook" of pics and guitar pics, autographs, passes.......

I was such a tool. ;-)

While attending college in Philly I worked for an indie record company and music mag, as well as interned for a radio station. The latter was one of the funnest *jobs* I ever had. It was paid (min. wage) and you got college credit. The BEST part about it was the fringe benefits.....concert tickets, CD's, lotsa of free meals (they were ALWAYS having something going on) booze, and chances to meet the artists. I got to meet one of my fave bands, Live, before they became well-known. Also met Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews....way before they were well-known.

Damn I miss that *job*. lol. That was one of the funnest times of my life.

-Tina

I always thought it'd be cool to have a job like that and meet so many bands.

Heh. I've seen Great White, Cinderella, and Slaughter (only because the opener). I just recently re-purchased the 1st Badlands CD (thought it was supposed to be reissued recently?) after getting rid of it with all my cassettes 10 years ago. Been doing the same with Great White. Got to chat with Cinderella's Fred Coury (& Jeff Labar) at a club a couple times a few years ago since a buddy of mine knew him. I think they all (Cinderella) live here in the Nashville area. Fred does some work at a studio in the city where I live (Hendersonville). I read some recent Cinderella news the other day. PM me if interested.

BTW, Winger's Reb Beach = one of the best guitarists around. ;)

I hate to admit I saw winger at the Ohio State Fair one year, back in the day when every band wanted to sound like Def Leppard. What a horrible time for music.

Cinderella is in Nashville now? Well, then again so is Nelson. Big shocker there. lol. I will PM ya sometime, Pilot.

Jeff, I agree, even though I was heavily into the *hair band* thing for a few years, until the whole "grunge" thing happened then everyone wanted to sound like Nirvana. lol. There were a few bands I liked at that time, namely Alice In Chains (and still do) but for the most part I hated that era. Now I look back on both eras and laugh (with good memories).

It's wild how the whole attitude changed. In the mid to late 80's the rock/metal music and videos were about partying, getting laid, chicks, booze, motorcycles.......

When the whole *Seattle* thing happened it was all about how much life sucks and how one should kill themselves. LOL! Such gloom. ;-)

I *loved* the 'grunge' movement! You could roll out of bed, throw on a pair of dirty jeans and a red & black lumberjack not comb your hair and it was cool!

Seriously though, 'Ten' is one of those rare alubums that I can listen to track by track and not be compelled to hit "SKIP".

lata, jeremy

--who cant stand Depeche Mode...

The good ole grunge days, my fav concert would have to be a Galactic Cowboys show in Elgin (a very underated band that went to popish)

Also saw Rush a couple years ago, just seeing Neil do a drum solo was worth the 45 bucks I paid.

Talk about wanting to kill yourself... I get that feeling every time I hear "Somebody" by Depeche Mode, and this coming from someone I went to see twice!

Best thing about 80s music is it makes great punk and ska covers for Reel Big Fish, Bowling For Soup, Less Than Jake and others! Hungry Like the Wolf? Take On Me? The Reflex? Come On Eileen? That "I ran so far away" song? Absolutely amazing songs ... as covers. ;)

Having seen the poodle perm you sported Tina I'm glad it's in the past ;)

-Jim (ya know I'm just kiddin ya mate!)

If you're stuck in the 80s (or 90s even) and not sure where to begin now that "the future of music" has hit, I have a few suggestions...

For the "softer crowd"... The Shins, The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie, Frou Frou, Modest Mouse, New Pornographers, Damien Rice, The Format, Keane, Snow Patrol, etc.

For the "harder crowd"... The Used, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy, Lostprophets, Brand New, Matchbook Romance, Story of the Year, Avenged Sevenfold, etc.

Too bad most of the "harder" list is really teen angst-y, bitter-y, my-girlfriend-cheated-on-me-so-now-I-have-to-set-her-on-fire-and-run-over-her-with-her-car-y, etc. for people who don't care for that stuff.

+Danny, coasters are hott too

Bitter?? Nah....

"So is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
Cause I've seen more spine on jellyfish
I've seen more guts on eleven-year-old kids
Have another drink and drive yourself home
I hope there's ice on all the roads
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
and again when your head goes through the windshield"

~"Seventy Times 7" - Brand New

Kristin ...Proud lurker, seldom poster...
I'm the queen of the softer crowd. Danny's soft=poppy, IMO.

"Want to be upside down, maybe thrown from side to side" - The New Pornographers, The Fake Headlines

Don't take Scream-O as representative of all of the genre - there is some good, calmer, less mobid emo/punk out there.
I've seen Rush a few times. Their 30th Anniversary show this summer was incredible. They played a song from every album, save one; almost 3 hours of playing. One of my top 3 bands.

I have always really been into Level 42, Toto, Journey, The Fixx, Howard Jones, INXS, Def Leppard, Queensryche, Ratt, Dokken, Van Halen, Joe Satriani...among others mentioned already. Plus quite a few 90's bands actually (The Ocean Blue, Smashing Pumpkins...).

I skipped most of the grunge bands, except STP and Pearl Jam. Always thought Nirvana was way overrated.

Tina, I think Bret Michaels and Mark Slaughter still live here. Quite a few other rock peeps do actually. BTW, click Engineers/Producers here http://www.atlantisstudio.net/

Like Yellowcard, Something Corporate, The Starting Line, The Ataris, and The Early November.

Those would go in my poppy category, Domerrie (along with *some* of the "softer" stuff).

Yay for Dashboard and SoCo at OSU in two weeks Kristin!! :)

+Danny

*anger rises at the mention of Starting Line* Starting Line - biggest ... a-holes ... EVER.

Those are definite "poppier" bands, although I really would hesistate to put the Ataris in there. Their more current stuff when they've prostituted themselves to get on the radio, yeah, that's a little poppier, but they were one of the ultimate underground punk bands back in the day ...

The crap on XtRemE radio!!!!11111 these days is crap. Every market seems to have a station like that, and I can't help but wonder if they have even two listeners over the age of 18.

Hoping U2 saves rock-n-roll in a couple of weeks. The single is way cool.
