Tears for Fears or PKI

U2 never ceases to amaze me. As much as their music evolves, it still sounds like U2. Many bands experiment with their sound and turn into completely different animals but U2 always manages to pull it off.

Well, Zooropa ALMOST ruined that but there are moments on that album that manage to save it!

Funny, I liked Zooropa; the last U2 album I really liked in fact. I haven't disliked the last couple, they're just...meh.

Pop and Zooropa are my least-favorite U2 albums. Their new How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb rocks...literally. Its one of their hardest-rocking albums in a while. I highly recommend it.

Another underated band is Kings X, they too kind of went poppy but their 1st album plus Dogman kicked some serious butt, (if only I was old enough at the time to see them when they came through town they played a bar and I wasn't 18)

I can't stand the newer punk stuff, give me MXPX anyday.

I didn't say I didn't like Zooropa, I just think it came close to straying too far from what makes U2, well... U2. Pop was a little better than Zooropa but I still can't place it among my favorites from the band. I'm really looking forward to the new one as the songs I've heard sound phenominal.
It really bothers me that he says 1, 2, 3, 14 at the beginning of the I Pod song though ;)

LOL...that sorta irks me too, Brett.

I think that irks just about everyone!

Hello, hello!

Hola!

I liked Zooropa, mostly, perhaps because of the time frame (junior year of college). I was so burned out on Achtung Baby (remember, radio guy at the time), that it had to be something different.

The Ataris have had quite a few poppy songs even before So Long, Astoria (San Dimas High School Football Rules, Giving Up on Love, Teenage Riot, Your Boyfriend Sucks, I Won't Spend Another..., etc.), but true, they are a little different and maybe more mature currently for that group. Sugarcult is another band to add to that list. Palm Trees and Power Lines is a very fun album.

They're not new, but I can't keep going without noting Green Day's American Idiot as one of the best albums of the year. They put on a hell of a live show as well.

I wonder when U2 will start to tour for the new album. Atomic Bomb is out in a little over two weeks and I haven't seen any dates yet. I've heard they *are* touring for it...

I assumed the uno, dos, tres, catorce thing was a play on words somehow. I do like Vertigo, though could maybe do without the yeah yeah yeah yeah...Ad infinitum. It's getting a lot of airplay on the radio here.
See I was totally disappointed in American Idiot. I've been a huge Green Day fan for years, been to see them live as much as I can, but I American Idiot was a big disappointment. I think the biggest problem I had with it is that there's no song that I remembered when I was done with the CD. No song made me want to go back and replay it over and over and that's generally what I look for in a CD. As a whole, I guess it's a good CD and I'll hang onto it just to say I own every Green Day CD, but I doubt I'll listen to it much, if ever again.

If you're into the poppy punk thing, check out Bowling For Soup's latest, A Hangover You Don't Deserve. For a punk band, they're amazingly musical, good harmonics and that nerdy musical stuff. ;)

Of course, to me and many others here, MXPX is the newer punk stuff. Give me 7 Seconds. ;)

It's a shame that Clear Channel took over all radio, because there's no room for counterculture now. Back in the 80's, smaller lesser known stations could keep a loyal audience by playing stuff like 10,000 Maniacs, New Order, the Cure, etc.

There's no room in radio for niche stations, now. They all need a perfect target demographic. It has totally killed good artist development. If U2 came out today, the label would drop them after "Boy" and "October" because they didn't sell enough.

Anywho, there are so many great bands that I've been getting in to lately that you're just not gonna hear of other than word of mouth. Some were mentioned above... Interpol, Ladytron, The Stills, Metric, Fischerspooner, Hot Hot Heat, Stellastarr*, Postal Service, the Sounds, etc.,etc.

There's plenty to program a real alternative station. It's just that neither of the two companies that own all the stations is willing to do it.

[/rant]...What was I talking about, again?

I wish Supreme Beings of Leisure would come out with a new album. It's music for sexy people. God knows I've heard them on countless TV shows, despite two aging albums.

Thanks to my friend and swapping iPod songs with ease, I have all the Bowling for Soup albums on my iPod now, yay! I'll have to listen to that one some more.

I didn't fall in love with American Idiot until after the concert, but looking at it as a "concept album" and knowing it as a whole, I really like how all the songs relate and I've had American Idiot, Are We the Waiting, and Wake Me Up When September Ends on repeat. I'm a sucker for slow songs too. Jesus of Suburbia is really cool, because it's like a "five-in-one" song deal (Homecoming as well). Maybe the concert had an effect on me more than anything as that was the only time I've seen them and I was going in with low expecations, but I haven't been able to stop listening to AI since then. Are We the Waiting has racked up like 25 plays on my iPod. I'm a little obsessed with that one (the "Jesus of Suburbia is a lie" line gives me chills for some reason).

And that would be considered a bad thing?!? ;)

But I agree with the "radio" thing. Clear Channel, Infinity Broadcasting, and (for you 'urbanites' out there) Westwood One dominate all the airwaves. It's sad, but here in DC you can pick up WW1 stations from both B'more and DC and they will play the same songs practically simultaneously. I've pretty much given up on it as most of the music stinks (or maybe I'm just becoming an old conservative curmudgeon).

Artists like Res and Goeapele (gwa-pa-lay), get lost in favor of Eamon and Lumidee; no talent hacks who stumble upon a catchy refrain. A pox on them.

--who likes U2 less than INXS.....and INXS womps!

Tears For Fears Back together...cool. I thought their breakup was pretty nasty so this is a surprise. Now only if the Talking Heads and Van Halen (with DLR) could do the same.

Have Fun

7 Seconds, I remember them from like Warped Tour 2! Haha, sorry to date ya a little, but hey, I liked them, I still have a demo tape that I got thrown at my head by them.

Yea, maybe American Idiot is a "gotta see it live" kind of thing. There's a few bands that are like that, heck even my fav, Reel Big Fish has a few songs that are just so incredibly lacking on CD, but live they're absolutely orgasmic.

Check out 1985 on the BFS album, it matches up with the theme of this thread pretty good!

Oh no, not a DLR vs Sammy thread, I'm reminiscing of the movie Airheads (which had Galactic Cowboys in the movie as the Sons of Thunder)

hehe, VH will be here tonight actually with Sammy
