Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 screen shots posted by Infogrames

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 publisher Infogrames today posted shots of the forthcoming game in conjunction with the E3 show, going on now in Los Angeles. The shots include Intamin box track, Arrow 4D, Giovanola hypers, new theme elements and scenario editing.

See the screen shots from Infogrames.

I know I will buy it, but those screenshots leave much to be deisred. I would rather have this than nothing, but here's to hoping more is to come before the release date.

Doesn't anyone ever actually READ what's on the screen? Okay I'll say it again. Graphics aren't as important as gameplay but they are important. GOOD GRAPHICS ARE CONDUSIVE TO GOOD GAMEPLAY! Always have been. If you don't believe me then... well... invite me to the Cave you've been living in for the past 25 years and we'll have tea.

Now to rebut this argument even further, RCT's graphics in 1999 weren't breathtaking, but they didn't suck either. At the time it was a new style, something unique and unfamiliar. The reason Sawyer chose tiny 8bit graphics over large 24bit ones is becuase the simulation required hordes of processing power. It was a decision to optimize the speed of the simulation, nothing more. Today with 1GHz+ processors as the entry level this is no longer an issue. So why couldn't do 24bit graphics as well as beef up the graphics engine? It would make the gameplay even better by improving the level of detail.

So there you go... take it or leave it. I think I was a very poor decision to go with the old graphics and old engine. So I don't think the trill is going to last very long at all.

Increase the resolution of the graphics, not the screen. *** This post was edited by Phyter on 5/23/2002. ***

Given the sheer number of changes people are observing (transfer tracks? ATMs?), it's clear to me that this is more than just an expansion pack. There are some significant internal changes in the engine involved. The PRESENTATION engine may very well be the same (although I suspect that'll be enhanced as well), but things such as the peep AI has got to be going through some serious revamping, if not a complete new codebase.

And if the Electronics Boutique preorder page is to be trusted, this will be priced the same as the expansion packs originally were. Hard to argue with that.

I can't wait until this release. Day 1, I'm snapping it up.

I'm just curious to know how anyone can tell from a few blurry resized images that the color depth is 8-bit. Assuming that it is, I don't find that terribly unacceptable from the standpoint that the game has to manipulate as many as thousands of things moving on the screen at once. Hmmm... would performance suffer if I had to move three times the data around the screen? I think it would.

Phyter: Good graphics have nothing to do with good gameplay. The interface with objects on the screen is not better or worse if they are little rectangles or if they are huge bitmapped million polygon objects. You still click on the thing and it brings up the window. Take, for instance, the final fantasy series. Gameplay hasn't changed significantly in, like 5 games, but graphics have taken giant steps. FF10 is essetially the same game as FF7 (with a new story, and a couple of new features) with better graphics. Is that what you want out of RCT2?!?!? Same game, better graphics!?!?!

AC?, RB?, MF?, DD?, PR? Who can keep track of it all?

I was wondering if we will be able to use our saved parks from the original game. I have some parks that I would love to just add to.

This game just looks amazing. I love the fact that the game will keep the "look" of the original game.

One thing I have to say that I think we can assume is that we will have new bobsled cars like La Vibora and Alpine Bobsled. Why you say?

Cause they said we can use 5 Six Flags Parks and they said Titan which "screams" Six Flags Over Texas and it seems Chris is trying to make the game a bit more realistic so I think it would be a safe bet that we will have those type of trains and an upgraded bobsled ride. (one without translucent tracks and different types of trains)

Also, I wonder if we will be able to place text on the trains themselves? And if we will have to repaint the tracks like how it got taken from the original game. Ahhhhhhh the possibillities!

Cedar Point gets "twisted for 2002"
Great Escape gets "screwed for 2002"

The pictures look like an expansion pack. I thought it would have a different look to the game, for example "Zoo Tycoons" . I will probably purchase it but it did not impress me.

Roller Coaster Tycoon ? It Should be called Six Flags Tycoon :( Sellouts...

An 8bit low res version of a game will play worse than a 24bit high res version of the same game. Esspecially in something as graphically complex as RCT. It's not an action game, but visual cues are still very important. You've never once zoomed up on an area in RCT and been just a little confused at what you were looking at?

Look.. my whole point is that the reason 8bit graphics were choosen for the original was due to lack of processor power. The simulation was more important. Now a days we can do both graphics and simulation. So why not do both? I don't know about you but I WANT BOTH.

Actually there have been some changes to the gameplay since FF7. And that's all we'er seeing in RCT2, "some changes". Not a massive update. But FFX gets incredible looking graphics that add significantly to the enjoyment of the game and work with the gameplay to produce an entirely unique experience. So, yes that is exactly what I want. Excelent analogy. *** This post was edited by Phyter on 5/23/2002. ***

Ive heard people say they saw a transfer track. Where?
[needless quotation removed -J]

One question, how reliable is this ? This is actuall the post that has excited me the most. Also, does anybody think that we may have to have the previous expansion packs to use RCT2? I mean, loading all the old files, and the new ones would be quite a big program. Don't ya think? *** This post was edited by Jeff on 5/23/2002. ***

Graphics-wise, I think Chris Sawyer has the right idea. The original RCT in '99 was a best-seller, and not only attracted enthusiasts, but the general population as well. Today, my guess is that he still wants RCT2 to attract a broad audience. For that, he'll need to make room for older technology.

Somone replied up there that everyone can't update their computer every 6 months. Hell, I've had this computer for 2 years without any significant sound or video updates. I'm happy that RCT is sticking to its simpler graphics, it leaves more room for my older graphics card.

I would appreciate a Cedar Point scenario park though.... :)

Lewis, RCT2 is supposed to be completely independent of original RCT. None of the expansion packs for original RCT should be needed.

Nobody knows yet if old parks can be imported yet... Only time will tell.

I just don't understand why they didn't choose to make some major changes graphics, when they have the given technology to do it.

When I first saw the screenshots, I thought it was a joke. I can't be right that 3 years later it still looks the same. Right now I'm pretty ****ing tired of playing the old rct. And that is NOT because of the graphics, that is because of the GAMEPLAY. And it looks like they haven't added anything to that either as well. Where is the nigt mode everyone was talking about, where is the resturants and bla bla bla...

This is a typical sequal, just like in the movie world. The sequal doesn't add anything new, it just follows the same track, making it little bigger just so the crowd is pleased. It's a shame that a game so good, will end like ****. No one besides of RCT freaks will buy this. The puplic will just think that it's the same, and it's nothing more than the same.

Will we ever see a RCT3?

Why mess up something that has been proven successful? I'm glad the graphics are not going to change.

And for those who want waterparks, it would be nice to have that but do you think the peeps have learned how to swim after three years?

I really do hope that Chris fixes physics though. The speeds in RCT arent that good.

danish_d -- just because the *few SMALL screenshots* we've seen don't show those, doesn't mean they're not in the game. The game isn't even finished yet, let alone released, so don't just assume that there WON'T be a night mode, for instance. There may not be, but we have NO way of knowing yet, and to make assumptions at this point is being pretty senseless.

Phyter -- from the sample shots we've seen, we have no guarantees one way or the other that the graphics haven't been improved. The shots show the look will be similar, yes, but perhaps the new game will support a 1600x1200 mode that the graphics simply haven't been generated for yet?

We're ALL speculating at this point. We know that RCT2 is coming out, and we've seen a few SAMPLE screenshots to whet our appetites. That's it. If people are disappointed based on that, that's their call, but that may also be their loss.

From the looks of that nasty 4-D element, I'm guessing that immelmans and dive loops won't be pre-built...

I want this game the day it comes out. Here's hoping for a demo in the near future.
