PKI Announces Tomb Raider: The Ride

Posted | Contributed by Lynch

After much debate and speculation, Paramount's Kings Island announced today their new-for-2002 attraction, Tomb Raider: The Ride. Though not a lot of information was divulged, representatives referred to the ride as a "heavily-themed, totally immersive dark ride experience" where guests would be part of the action the entire time, including while waiting in the queue. Kings Island officials say there's nothing like it in the world. Though not a record-breaking roller coaster, the park says they're aiming for something special to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

PKI must know what they are doing! I mean, CP already has a giga, and SFWOA has a floorless and flying! PKI wanted to build something with a new concept, never done before. And this sounds like that. And I bet this thing cost more money that a giga would ever cost! Prolly close to 100,000,000 dollars (spidermans cost). So they must know what they are doing. Remember, we are the minority here. On any given day in an amusement park, probably less than 5% of the people there are coaster enthusiasts. That leaves 95% of people who want something exciting, new, and fun. Hence: TR:TR!

IS THERE A BETTER PARK THAN HOLIDAY WORLD??

I THINK NOT!!!!!

lets look on the bright side...pki seems pretty confident in there new ride....im thinking something along the lines of the indiana jones adventure ride....but then again it sounds like it will be something new....but what ever it is im sure it will be great.

That ride sucked, but at least i got to see the ocean!
Hey Robbe,

You dont like they ride, then dont ride it. But obviously you seem to be one of those people that needs a new coaster every year. Well, that isn't going to happen. Parks can't afford a new coaster every year. They dont cater to just coaster enthusiasts, they cater to everyone. Not everyone likes coasters. They are going with something different more family oriented, its not coasters that make a park, its the park overall that makes a park. So you can whine and be pissed off if you want, but the fact is the park is trying to please everyone, and not with just coasters.
I think it's great.:)
Getting strapped into an escape vehicle that will rocket upward with a face-first plunge sounds great to me.:)
I am suprised they named it "Tomb Raider:The Ride" now no-one can make fun of SF unless they make fun of Paramount too.

You guys ever see Spiderman? It dives headfirst 400ft., that's most likely what this is. It's gonna be a simulator IMO. When you drop the 400ft. on Spiderman he catches you in his net before you hit, hmmm, wonder if it's the same thing?! Most likely.
Look at it this way. Even if the thing blows, it will hopefully clear out the action zone and FoF, shortening lines for some great rides. It will help to bring more people in the gates, meaning more money for PKI. More money for PKI means more coasters in years to come.
Well, spill the beans then, what did you see?
I can't believe they had a press conferance, and only told us the name of the ride. Is it a coaster or not? What was everyone saying?
Parks blow for keeping everything top secret. I'm not excited right now, I'm friggen mad because they keep us in the dark. They announce opening dates, don't hit them, and then don't tell us anything (Deja-Vu). And now they announce a ride and don't even give us the details. Oh yeah, like some other park is gonna hear the press conferance, go out and build the same thing first, yeah, right. They don't need to keep everything top secret like this.

This is the topspin style attraction we've read about. It's not a simulator. It's not like spiderman.

Did anyone see this:

If this is what they're trying to make, I'm completely 100% for it. How are they supposed to attract more people if they got a giga coaster anyway? CP is only 4 hours anyway and if someone is visiting, they're more likely to go to both parks, not just one. They already have a built in audience. I personally, can't wait. A TA2K indoors with a about 5000 feet of track going slow through the first half like a dark ride and then a blast off finale!! That would be excellent!
Okay, for the post WAY up there about PKI firsts, if you are going to claim King Cobra as the first stand up, you have to get it right. It was the first coaster DESIGNED TO BE a stand up. The first actual stand up was Extremeroller at Worlds of Fun in 1983 (Arrow Corkscrew converted to stand-up).

I'm sorry, I just don't want this debate to start all over again as it has happened many times before.

The website speil really reeks of top spin. :)
HarKarVolBasTre, you're right I don't know you, but, you left yourself wide open with your comment- "This is Coasterbuzz, not Parkbuzz, so of course I'm not happy. I like coasters. You basically said that no one has any right discussing anything except for coasters on Coasterbuzz. If that wasn't your intention, than why type it?

Sounds like a copy of sorts of Indiana Jones. That is an incredible dark ride, and is a lot more exciting than some coasters! Don't complain, it doesn't have to be a coaster to be a good ride!!

Supermandl is right. Here's larger version of the picture:

You can clearly see riders in OTSRs on a platform with lights underneath. Looks like a Top Spin type ride to me. Remember that PCWo recently added the Mondial version.

If it's not, don't fear if it's a simulator. Paramount Parks also runs Star Trek: The Experience in Vegas. What is that you might ask? Well, it's none other than a motion simulator with an ellaborate queue and pre-show.

Number of simulators:

1) 7th Portal - Iwerks
2) Smash Factory - Iwerks
3) Voyager VR

3 counts as a number of simulator attractions to me. I'm placing my bets on the Top Spin, which will actually totally mess with folks minds if they think its a simulator. ("It felt just like we were upside down" "WELL, you WERE!")

Okay, I'm not the one to usually dwell on these kinds of things, but, Tomb Raider: The Ride!? C'mon, couldn't PKI be a LITTLE more creative with the name than that? I'm sorry, but naming a roller coaster after a movie that wasn't even that good and most people won't care about 5 years from now? Get real. I really hope that King's Island doesn't turn into a SF type park, naming everything after their latest movie, I mean at least SF has franchises with Batman and Superman. Lara Croft isn't near as legendary as those two. As for the ride, I really think a mid-sized woodie would've made PKI, the elite park for wooden coasters, but this doesn't sound half bad.

What PKI could be getting is a bobsled coaster (the ice cave) with pieces of normal track for the plunge (plunge head first into boiling lava) This could be it
