PKI Announces Tomb Raider: The Ride

Posted | Contributed by Lynch

After much debate and speculation, Paramount's Kings Island announced today their new-for-2002 attraction, Tomb Raider: The Ride. Though not a lot of information was divulged, representatives referred to the ride as a "heavily-themed, totally immersive dark ride experience" where guests would be part of the action the entire time, including while waiting in the queue. Kings Island officials say there's nothing like it in the world. Though not a record-breaking roller coaster, the park says they're aiming for something special to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

I hope its better than the movie. oops did I say that?
well be happy.. because thats a koo ride already for a paramount park.. look at PCW or PGA we get sucky things :(
I already think that both Adventure Express and Flight of Fear are cool themed rides with effects, and since I tend to favor dark rides anyways, I think this ride sounds awesome. Since the park is run by the movie company Paramount, it is fitting that it'd have a ride like this to better compete with say Universal.

They still may be adding some super crazy steel coaster for next year. There is a big clearing beyond the vortex and near the train station which can be seen from the Drop Zone. Its been recent too, so I suspect pki has some surprises in store for us still
Maybe that big clearing is for the Tomb Raider ride, Cause if you think about it, put some trees back there, props, etc, that would make a great area for a part of the ride. and No One would ever notice it until the ride opens. My guess is if that they do any outside work of the ride it will be after the park closes down for the season.
The ride sounds just like a virtual ride. A really dislike those rides because they are no fun what so ever!!

Hmm, no where have I heard what type ride this would be. If your going to judge, how bout you judge when more information is out. go to www.pki.com and on the main page there is a "TOMB RAIDER OPENS 2002" type link, im not sure of the exact wording, how bout you go there, and sign up for the Tomb Raider Newsletter which will send out whenever more information is available. Makes sense to me.
Paramount's Kings Island was just featured on Entertainment Tonight about Tomb Rider The Ride opening next year also noting the film has recently passed the $100 million mark at the box office!!! Go PKI!

I have developed my own idea of how TR: TR will be. I remember a rumor (it may be true I can't remember) of a new S & S Tower. It would launch you and then when you reach the top the seats would invert. I have no idea what this will be, but I hope I am one of the first to ride. I like the idea of keeping everything secret so it is a surprise when you get there, so I hope I can ride it before the mystery is revealed. I think someone mentioned this before, but what if this is just a diversion. What if PKI wants to draw all of our attention to Tomb Raider while they add a second unknown attraction. Maybe this is just wishful thinking, but I can hope. Whatever 2002 brings PKI it will be a winner.
How about PKI just get every coaster in the world and put it in the park because they have so many new rides and they get a new coaster every year.

If you zoom in like 5 times on the hi-res image provided by PKI's web site, there is an image in the bottom left corner of people sitting in these over the shoulder harnesses... doesn't look like a simulator to me!!!

I can't find a way to post the zoomed-in picture, but if anyone wants it I can e-mail it to you. Just e-mail me at TCFlispart@aol.com and I'll send it. Put TR:TR in the subject field.

We are the ones who wait in line for hours for a 45-second thrill, and consider it time well spent. *** This post was edited by Package2001 on 7/4/2001. ***
Geeze i can't believe how spoiled you PKI people are! Try going to parks like SFDL, SFEG, or SFKK, who NEVER get new rides. (well atleast not in the past 3 years for DL, my home park). Right now i would kill for a kick arse simulator! My guess is that we will go a few more years without a new coaster. So stop your damn complaining and be grateful, there are alot of less fortunate parks out there.
For me I think PKI made a right choice to get something different for a change. 2003 or 2004 will be the year PKI will build another coaster. Why do you have to count your ckickens before they hatch? I'm so sick and tired of people complaining that PKI isn't giving them what they want. Some of you guys need to grow up and quit acting like a 6year old whose parents didn't get him a Power Ranger for his B-day.

MPD47, SFDL got Superman back in 1999. So they have gotten a new ride in the past 3 years...just not 2000 or 2001. :)
Screamscape seems to think that this will be a themed indoor Top Spin flat ride.

Check it out.

The Top Spin idea does sound right, since in the movie Lara Croft is hanging on top of that battering ram. Right when I saw that, I was thinking that it could be incorporated in to some kind of Tomb Raider ride. Little did I know...
Although maybe not possessing the European style theming of Busch Gardens Williamsburg or the areas of say Disneyland Paris, I thought the theming at Kings Island was okay. If anything, I think it would be cool if they made a new themed adventure area with Tomb Raider and also move Adventure Express in that area. That way they could have a more German themed coaster near the Oktoberfest area like Busch Gardens with Big Bad Wolf and Alpengeist. I could also maybe see King Cobra moved to an Adventure area. Would the park be able to do such a thing?

My only other comments is that I wish you didn't have to have a kid with you to go in the haunted house!

You can go in without them now and I think that was only going on for a few weeks last year. I don't know why they ever started that, because the line is almost always non-existent.
No 1. This ride is definately not going to be a sim- the pics and the press release suggest otherwise. It was promised to be new and innovative. It will definately be a new and exotic full blown action adventure thrill ride. so dont start knockin it- I'll be good.

No 2. For those of you who are persecuting Pki for not making a giga or any other super coaster- you can stop. Everyone knows that Cedar Point and Pki are in a hardcore race to be the worlds coaster capitol. Lets look at the inevitable- unless CP starts knocking down some older rides, they are going to run out of room to build any coasters on they're penninsula. Pki on the other hand has only used up about 35% of its total property. They own all the area from around the campgrounds to back near the high school you can see from top gun then way back behind FoF and the Vortex. Then the loty around the Beast which they wouldn't dare to touch. Plus all the wooded areas around behind the warterpark and the railroad. All that is Pki property. They have room to build 20 more coasters if they wanted too (plus think of all the money Paramount could afford to front) Pki has the ability to become a thrill-seeker's coaster dream Park. When it comes to land and resourse capabilities- Pki has already won the race to be Roller coaster capitol. It just wont be final til about 2004 0r 2005.

As for right now with the TR: TR. Coaster enthusiasts just chill out. Pki will have you a giga whithin a couple years. Plus we get a super thrill ride next year, which who knows, may have some coaster qualities. The top spin idea doesn't seem to fit with the idea of a groundbreaking new ride which will change the industry. Im thinking a combination dark ride/coaster with some really awesome theming- i mean just check out the pics on their website- it'll be good.

As for you who think Rivertown will be destroyed by this move- think again. Take a look at the pics and you will see that even the entrance and line fit into the woodsy Rivertown Atmosphere. I dont think the building will look like a sky scraper stuck in the middle of a quiet forest. It'll blendin with the Rivertown Atmosphere.

SO that is all for now. I know I was kinda hitting a tough argumentable subject with the CP vs. PKI thing but it is pretty inevitable if you think about it.

So for right now- good move on Pki's part- the coasters will surely hit the park in a couple years.

Go PKI
