PKI Announces Tomb Raider: The Ride

Posted | Contributed by Lynch

After much debate and speculation, Paramount's Kings Island announced today their new-for-2002 attraction, Tomb Raider: The Ride. Though not a lot of information was divulged, representatives referred to the ride as a "heavily-themed, totally immersive dark ride experience" where guests would be part of the action the entire time, including while waiting in the queue. Kings Island officials say there's nothing like it in the world. Though not a record-breaking roller coaster, the park says they're aiming for something special to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

CincyBoy, AMEN. And like I said before let the speculation begin....since there was no conclusive evidence one way or another the ride could be anything and everything we can think of. So lets not get our panties in a bunch and just enjoy what we all think it could be. Because who knows maybe every idea we have had of what it will be could be wrong.

Welcome to Deja Vu...home of the world wide wait.
This is nuts. PKI didn't answer the question of what's it gonna be today. I could have told you on Friday that they were gonna make Tr:Tr. There is no guessing what this is gonna be, and no one will know until opening day next year. 2001 is gonna be a long year.
Hmm, the press release does practically scream simulator ride "Guests strap into the only vehicle of escape possible" How many times have we heard that line.

However, the park already owns two simulaotrs and brings a third one in on a concession basis, and none of the three seem to be doing all that well, so may I entertain you with anohter thought.

A while back someone mentioned PKI was to get a Top Spin. Then someone said an indoor Top Spin.

How bout this after the interactive queue and preshow, guests are hurried into the only vehicle of escape which so happens to be a Top Spin, that would fill the two requirements of
- begin quote fron press release -
the escape will include rocketing upward for a close encounter in an ice cave with menacing, razor-sharp stalactites and a face-first plunge straight down toward a pit of boiling, red-hot lava.

- end quote

Got to admit a Top Spin with audio visual effects would be quite an impressive multi sensory dark ride experience, and no one to my knowledge has enclosed a Top Spin ride, so it would be an amusement industry first

Couldn't you see replacing the calm fountain at the bottom of a Top Spin with a bubblign red lava pit? And stalactities up above the top of the ride.?

I agree it's gonna take a whole lot of money to transform the carnival ride into a total immersion spectacular, but we'll see.

Trip Report- Tomb Raider The Ride,

TR, TR: TR!

Well, even if TR:TR was a coaster I think it could just be a new name for Adventure Express. It's a tomb theamed coaster alreghighty built. Just add cardboard Laura Croft cut outs.

Hello from Mr. Difficult To Remember Screen Name
Obviously the person who responded to my above post has no idea what I am like, or what I do. I can elaborate, and I did. But let's just save that for later. Now on to my post.

--------

Hey, maybe it'll be a fun simulator. But probably not, if it's like the stuff I've been on, some of which has been described as "fun" by others here. And as others have said, maybe it has a coaster or flat ride part. Well, woohoo. Won't that be nice for me. From what PKI has said, I think that it will possibly have some sort of RIDE-ride portion. But what do I know...

According to the press release it could be a cross between Dueling Dragons and the Incredible Hulk. It might have the que line like DD, but a coaster like the Hulk. It says that guests will proceed through mysterious chambers, etc. (a heavily themed que-line) and then it says guest strap in the only possible vehicle of escape(guests getting in a rollercoaster train). Then it says the escape will include rocketing upward with a close encounter with an icecave that has falling stalactites (Like the Hulks incline launch). Then a face first plunge into a lava pit (areally good coaster drop).

Maybe that's what TR:TR is going to be I don't know. I guess we'll wait for more details on the ride.

I was there today and it is supposed to be a totally imersable dark ride with a vertical face-first plunge into boiling hot lava. (i got a press release folder from Jeff Seibert because he's my friend) I talked to Jeff and he said it was definately NOT a roller coaster however there would be places with track.

I dont care what all you people say about, how we sould happy, b-c there getting something, you know what Im pissed!!!!! i hate simulators and if your happy that least they got something well good for you have fun watching me sleep on it next year. I think this has to be one of the biggest dissapointments in PKI history. Face they need a giga or a hyper or a B&M. They would have made more money if they built a B&M or a giga. But now they have to build some stupid indoor coaster where will be apart of the action WOW????? I mean did the company even ask the GP what they might want, this is terrible, im just not the person to say ohhh well at least they got something.
I've never been on a ride like Spiderman so I'm excited to try this out. And just remember, with the interactive queue, it's more than likely to be air conditioned. Now that's a GREAT break from any day of summer heat. The only thing that could be better in a line like that is if they handed out free drinks. Maybe a Mummy Mai-Tai? or a Long-Deceased Iced Tea? LOL

God please let SFKK get something this year. ANYTHING!!
I just love what PKI is doing with this. Its like a good movie or something! Don't tell me what happens! I Want to find out for myself! Really, i may just completely avoid info about this ride just to keep it as mystrerious as possible for me. Actually, this reminds me a lot of how they hid the construction of FoF by building half of the building and then constructing the track.

Robbe:

Considering that they have built 3 coasters in 3 years, would you have been happier if PKI just built nothing this year?

And on another note, how can you say they would have made more money if they had built a B&M or a giga, when this thing is going to open in a little less than a year? It hasn't even begun to be built yet, much less opened.

I like the ride concept and the name. Way to go PKI. Just one question. How do you theme Tomb Raider into Rivertown. Look at what SFMM did with Goliath in Colossus County Fair and what SFGAdv did with Medusa in Frontier Town. Good Luck PKI
at the ACE appreciation day at PKI jeff told the ACErs that they were gonna be gettin something big and totally new that would make us ACErs happy. and let me tell ya everyone started to cheer. i dont think a simulator ride is gonna make every ACEr happy. and a top spin ride with special effects who the hell cares its still a top spin ride that is pretty boring. i still think its gonna be an indoor coaster of some sort. leaning more towards Hyperosnic. all ACErs love coasters above anything else so if its gonna make ACErs happy a simulator wont make us jumpy happy as if it were a coaster. and im gonna have to agree with Robbe, if it is a simulator ride this is the biggest disappointment in PKI History not because they didnt get a coaster but just the fact that they already got a bunch of simulator rides and they arent doin so well what makes you think that one with a bunch more theming is gonna make it more popular than the others. and its not gonna be a spiderman type ride get that through your head its a ride never seen before. spiderman has been made and is running so its NOT a spiderman type ride.
Sounds to me more like a dark ride with simulator elements. Without further information, my early prediction is a budget version of Spiderman. You know, in the same way that Phantom Theater is a budget version of Haunted Mansion.

The elaborate queue is an interesting idea...given all the discussion these days about virtual queue systems, I think it underscores Paramount's philosophy that virtual queueing isn't the solution to long lines....!

One thing that bothers me, though: If it needs an elaborate queue, that implies low capacity which makes me wonder if the park ever learns.....

A simulator sounds cool and all, but it will have to be fantastic in order to beat Spiderman. I could see why people are a bit upset. I mean all the hype....for a thrill ride non-coaster?
I live by PGA and i just wanted to tell you people that i would be just as happy to get a world class dark ride as as world class coaster. I would love a new woodie, but hey. Just think you guys just beat out CP and SFWOA. You guys are getting something they do not have. A WORLD CLASS DARK RIDE. If its as good as it sounds it will bring PKI lonts of money, more money equals bigger attractions in the future. Thinkof this as a way to bankroll your giga...
Maybe the entire Rivertown section of the park will receive a total overhaul. The Beast's entrance and queue will probably need to be expanded due to the increase in guests to this portion of the park.

Also I wonder just how large this building is going to be. I've heard a rumor of it being near 30 stories which would be something under 300 feet. If this is the case I see a coaster inside the building. Maybe the attraction will be 2 rides combined the first half will be a dark ride of some sort, while the second half is a launched coaster ride.

Also, think about the re-ridability of this ride. How often can you re-ride simulators, after a while they begin to get boring. That's just me.

Things should get very interesting as more information is revealed.

I don't get it. Person after person says that PKI has "a bunch" of simulator rides. Could someone please name them for me, because PKI is my homepark and i certainly don't see "a bunch" of simulator rides.
