PKI Announces Tomb Raider: The Ride

Posted | Contributed by Lynch

After much debate and speculation, Paramount's Kings Island announced today their new-for-2002 attraction, Tomb Raider: The Ride. Though not a lot of information was divulged, representatives referred to the ride as a "heavily-themed, totally immersive dark ride experience" where guests would be part of the action the entire time, including while waiting in the queue. Kings Island officials say there's nothing like it in the world. Though not a record-breaking roller coaster, the park says they're aiming for something special to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

Just remember, variety is what makes a great park, not how many costers it has. Rollercoasters only cater to one crowd. To draw every type of crowd to your park, you need more than just roller coasters.
beast7369, it does sound like H-XLC, but I don't know. I was hoping for the anniv. they built a big ol' coaster with no theming to a movie or gimmicks, like SOB. Not that that's bad, but I've always liked rides like Magnum or MF at CP, or Vortex at PKI. No theming in line, just get on and ride! Any-who, I tend to agree with everyone that it sounds like a dark ride of some sort. Maybe an enclosed TA? :) That would be pretty cool. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see!

Why are some people mad? You got Face/Off and Drop ZOne in the same year and the first hyper wooden looping rollercoaster and then you get a heavily themed Log Flume and they got a new kiddie coaster which ends up turning into a whole new section of the park and FOF gets lap bars too and you people are so greedy! I would love it if PKI was my homepark. Mine is Carowinds and there suppose to get a wild mouse next year and I would much rather have a Tomb Raider Dark ridr. Sounds cool to me. And how do you know it is a simulator? Has anyone been on that Dinosaur/Countdown to Extinction ride at Disneys Animal Kingdom? It could be something like that and I thought that ride was cool. It was obvious it wasnt a coaster anyways. Paramount would rather be a theme park chain. It attracts more people anyways... Well just my opinion. :)
Don't get your hopes up for the coaster part. The "escape", rocketing upward and downward sounds like it could be the rumored enclosed top spin ride.

If PKI is trying to be IOA, they will be nothing but a wanna be IOA. IOA fits their rides to the theme of the area, creating a total experience for the park patron.
Wake up to reality, it's not a coaster of any type. It's a dark ride attraction, themed to Tomb Raider. I'll be following the construction of this ride very closely. I have to wonder if this ride will find it's way to a Paramount park near me, so this is of great interest to me. Hope it works out for PKI.

There is no such thing as inner peace. There is only nervousness and death.
The amount of negativity circulating the forum is "horrible". I have to say that a themed queue experience with a themed coaster attraction of some sort sounds very likely. Remember the PKI reps said that coaster lovers wouldn't be disappointed about what was in store for them in 2002. I still think that from the description we will be seeing a dark coaster of some type. Hyper coaster - no, multi inversion - no. Something with a *****in drop this sounds more likely. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for the best.

I can't believe I drove 95 mph to get home and read this - I guess I was hoping that was the speed their new coaster was going to go.

I love PKI and the Beast, but thank God for Magic Mountain. Spiderman was good, but it wouldn't get me to cross the Atlantic, and neither will Tombraider: The Ride - sad name as well, sounds like Batman: The Ride.

By the way, if it was a coaster inside the tomb, I think they would have said - parks don't cover up the fact they are getting a coaster.

Yeah beast, you're right, it *does* sound a lot like a themed H:XLC. I would be happy if they had just little putt-putt vehicles. But if they were to theme a TA2K......WOW, that would be my favortie ride of all time. :)

Yeah, remember they did say that they are not going to reveal all of the surprises yet. Imagie being in a coaster car, inside a building, going slowly through the scenery, and theming, then boom you must escape! A door flys open and you are launched through it into who know what kind of intense coaster experience. It's not unheard of. Thats how Test Track at Epcot is.

**WISHFULL THINKING**
Sure, it's called Coasterbuzz, but does that mean that we can't discuss other types of rides? I'm of course referring to the comment above by the impossible to remember screen name. I think if you read this site on a daily basis, you'll notice that people often discuss all types of rides (flats, water rides, simulators etc.), because most of us enjoy the whole park experience, not just the coasters. TR:tR could be an amazing attraction. Open your mind and you might enjoy it too.

maybe it will be like spiderman at IOA
This sounds like one heck of a ride! Although I didnt get a chance to make it out to PKI this year, I will be there next year for sure. This does not sound like a "spiderman" type simulator to me, but more like a coaster, dark ride hybrid. They did say there is nothing else like it in the world! It sounds awesome! And all of you coaster snobs need to stop! Whatever it is, PKI will not dissapoint. I have never been dissapointed by them, and the only time i was (FOF) they fixed it!! Im sure it will be great and get a TON of attention from national media.

IS THERE A BETTER PARK THAN HOLIDAY WORLD??

I THINK NOT!!!!!
-------ADAM (KY COASTER FREAK)
Oh and another thing! Why the hell would they put a hypersonic XLC !? I mean really people! The building would be incredibly huge and the scenery would be worth nothing if you just zoomed by it at over 80mph!!! A dive machine sounds a little more reasonable but it just doesnt seem like a coaster. Or maybe it is like Escape from Atlantis where it is half thrill ride/rollercoaster???? It says a thrill ride like no other so it is obviously something we have never seen before! I hope all the Paramount Parks end up getting this thing! It sounds awesome! *** This post was edited by GhettoCoaster on 7/2/2001. ***
Woo-hoo! A park has finally thought outside the box for a change, and not given into the whims of the cry-baby enthusiasts!
Everyone who has said PKI will not disappoint next year is right. Even if it isn't a coaster, it is something NEVER SEEN BEFORE. PKI never disapoints. Now if we on;y had more details on what it's like.....

Complain, Complain, Complain. Geez, your park is getting something, be happy for that. They can't get a roller coaster every year you know. Parks dont bank on just coasters, its the entire package. So enjoy it, a new ride, should be happy, not moaning that its a record breaking coaster. Some people are just so greedy. You can fire back at me if you want, i dont care. But that is the truth, be happy your park is getting something.
did anyone happen to catch the clue that it may be a coaster.

"Rocketing upward for a close encounter with razor sharp stalacitites and face first plunge straight down toward a pit of boiling, red-hot lava."

It does sound like a Hypersonic to me rocketing upward sounds like the launch straight up and straight down to the lava well self-explanatory straight down the other side. Possibly a 4th Dimension face first plunge straight down.

They didnt give us much details about the ride for a reason they wanted us to think. they gave us the clues about the ride. now we have to think what it may be.
I think that this ride is great news. Time will tell what the ride will be and whether or not it will be a great ride. If it is a great ride, then PKI will be in possession of a great collection of roller coasters, plus the type of ride that you usually have to travel to California or Florida to ride. I'm glad to see that PKI is building something different for next year. It is not like Ohio is in dire need of another roller coaster.
I have acutally heard second hand from a buddy of mine whose dads company helped make the presentation that it was going to be a TA2K. And I am saying this cause this guy doesnt like coasters, and even had to ask me what a TA2K was!
Maybe it is a coaster after all
