Did you get e-mail from ThrillNetwork?

I have a hard time understanding how certain people involved get angry at the people who they did this to.

You spammed me and then you're angry that I'm angry that you spammed me? (well not me, I do have an open account over there, but you know what I mean)

What kind of twisted logic is that?

Maybe....maybe if it was just Jeff going goofy over it then yes, drop it and move on, but you have an awful lot of people here who weren't pleased. But of course they're wrong for not wanting info sent to them ("mistake" or not). So let's get mad at an entire community (and the largest one on the internet even) of exactly the people you're trying to attract to your site.

Wow, if that isn't pointing the barrel of the gun directly at your own foot, lining up the shot real nice and pulling the trigger then nothing is.

0) Yes, another me-too-AOL-ish response. :)

1) I got the spam too.

2) Came to the same email address I have registered on here

3) ...which is NOT my "real" email address, but an alias to the real one

4) ...which might be in one or two other places, but not many.

5) One suggestion to Jeff might be to try slightly obfuscating displayed address -- for example, swapping out @ signs in user profiles for a .gif picture of an @ sign. That doesn't do much for address mining pointed at one specific site (like this one) but works pretty well for screwing with generic run-of-the-mill spam mining. If you wanted to get really anal you could swap out dots for a gif of a dot. :)

Good idea, Mike, and I have thought about that. It'd be really easy to do something like that. News.com has been doing that on their contact page for awhile now.

The new version of the forum does private messages, but I'm not ready to deploy that any time really soon because it would require a lot of data conversion, and I have two other projects that actually pay I need to finish first.

Thank you, 'Playa, for the lesson in Webanomics. :)

My personal favorite part of CPMark's description of location: at TN or SFN, never at CB

Obviously he is suffering from the same syndrome that many listeners of "shock" radio do - people like to get mad, and they like to hear themselves so that they feel validated. If they didn't complain about a site or listen to a radio show that they disagreed with, they would be stuck in their meaningless lives. I would not be surprised if he writes on this board again.

BTW, based on Professor's CPlaya's webenomics lecture, you will also note Traffic Rank...CBuzz= 48,145, Swillnetwork=447,441

This game is like GOLF, the LOWER your number the better;) Maybe that is why they had to harvest emails so they weren't just sending the email to themselves.

They had the apology on the front page, notably with the bit about harvesting the e-mails from other rollercoaster sites absent. I posted a comment asking how they got the e-mail address that they sent it to, seeing as I didn't sign up at their site with it, but that front page news article seems to have disappeared.

I kinda like the site myself, though it definitely needs some work. It definitely doesn't get the traffic that this joint does though, there's usually a few new posts each day, it seems.

Time for a TN Editor's opinion! (Yay, just what you've all been waiting for, right?)

Before I start, I'd like to make a few points: First off, no, I didn't just register to post this, I've been registered for awhile. Second: I know what you're all thinking: "Someone from Thrillnetwork is trying to justify this to get us to shut up, what a moron, lets not listen to him, blah blah blah." No, this is not the case - because I had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the sending or writing of the newsletter.

Well.. ok. Where do I start? Yeah, I'm an editor for Thrillnetwork. I'm not in charge, I don't call the shots or anything, all I do is post news articles and help moderate the forums. Yes, we know Thrillnetwork is not a very good site, and yes, we're aware that we don't get nearly as much traffic as CoasterBuzz, and yes, we know that most of our forum members are illiterate morons. But we don't care, we're only doing all this for fun in our free time.

Lets get one thing straight: this is the first time that Thrillnetwork has EVER spammed, and Alex Westerman, the guy who sends the newsletters, insists that it was a mistake. I've talked it over with the admins, and yes, it indeed was a mistake. I don't know how Alex got all your email addresses, so don't ask me (its none of my business), but he had no intention of sending the newsletter to all of you. If we really were purposely trying to spam, don't you think we would've done it with our newsletters a long time ago? Also, Spam usually doesn't come in "Newsletter form", it usually says something like "Hey! Want to _____? Then visit (insert site)!" Think about it. If we were really trying to spam, we would've said something like that. It also would'nt have had the member username text at the top ("Dear *insert username or blank space* ). This is just one newsletter of many that have come before it (which were all sent successfully) that accidentally got sent to the wrong people. So, blame Alex Westerman for the mistake, not Thrillnetwork the site or anyone else in charge of it. After all, Alex DID apologize... How many of your penis enlargement spamming websites do that??

I'd also like to continue to ask why you all are getting so wound up over a SINGLE unwanted email. "Spam in my email account?? Why I never!!!" I get 5-10 spam emails in my mailbox every single day, and I don't care, I just take a second or 2 to delete them all. The fact that you're all complaining about receiving ONE unwanted email (that takes a second to delete if you don't want it) and are now hungry for some Thrillnetwork blood astounds me. Do you all really have NOTHING better to do than whine about a SINGLE email? Its not like you've never gotten an unwanted email before, and at least this one wasn't about penis enlargement or weight loss. Yes, I realize the real issue is HOW they sent it to you, but if you're so terribly upset about that, maybe you should wonder just how all those penis enlargement groups got your email address too and go after them. Every one of those emails links to their site, so I'm sure you could contact their site's ISP the same way you did Thrillnetwork's, although that would take a lot longer since you get a lot more of those every day, and this was only one little email from Thrillnetwork that you EVER got.

So, as part of Thrillnetwork but having nothing to do with the email, I'm sorry you all had to delete another piece of email you didn't want along with those 12 other pieces of spam you get daily. I'm sure that extra click was just painstakingly difficult. I'm sorry that one little email you didn't want offends you so much to the point where you're willing to fight over something so trivial, something most internet users would just say "Whats this? I don't want this." and delete and move on.

PS: The reason the "unsubscribe" option at the end of the email doesn't work is because half the stuff on Thrillnetwork doesn't work. Duh.

Oh, and by the way, CoastaPlaya, you aren't funny.... at all.... sorry. "SwillNetwork?" What are you? A 2nd grader calling names? Grow up (especially since you're a grown man.)

*Awaits the coasterbuzzers to pick apart everything I said in this post, and use it out of context in an attempt to make me look stupid.*

Okay, this is really easy to follow.

TN or Alex Whateverman or someone else took e-mails addresses from sites that are not affiliated with that site. Mine included. The e-mail account I use for this site is archaic and I haven't used it in years; since before TN existed, I'm sure.

I did not trust my personal information to your site (if you moderate it, you support its actions, as far as I'm concerned). I trusted it to Jeff because I have been continually impressed with the way Coasterbuzz is run. That your website has my e-mail address at all is of the utmost concern. You've already established that your practices are unscrupulous by this act. That you sent the newsletter to the wrong group of addresses only illustrates your ignorance, not your innocence.

Furthermore, seeing as how your site's behavior has shown itself to be questionable, I have no real assurance that my e-mail address will not be distributed to other, larger, high-volume spammers. I'm sure that's a quick way to make a buck when you can't pay your hosting fees and nobody visits your website.

I don't need to make any attempt at making any of you look stupid because you're doing a spectacular job of it yourselves. You didn't mess up once by accidentally spamming my inbox with mail I didn't solicit. You messed up by farming this site for e-mail addresses and then you messed up again by sending out those e-mails. Your lousy attempts at justifying your behavior are strike three as far as I'm concerned and I'd be happy to see you shut down.

What do I Listen-To?
I am stereotypical.

Note: Once again, I had nothing to do with the newsletter's writing or sending. I did not send it, I did not make the mistake, and I don't know how the mistake happened. Franky, none of you do either. So I don't know why you're placing the blame on me or all of Thrillnetwork when it was a small accident made by one man.

And I'd like to know what Thrillnetwork has done in the past that is so questionable.

About the e-mail in people's info. Why not just make a mailto: hyperlink with "click here to e-mail marimbaguy87" instead of listing the person's e-mail? Would that work, or would a "bot" still pull it from the coding?

No... the hyperlink still has the address in the HTML link, so it's still there.

What's to use out of context? I think Maddie pretty much summed up our position. The deliberate action of collecting e-mail addresses and sending them e-mail is not an accident, and not something you should need to apologize for if it was perfectly OK and right in the first place.

The funny thing is, the lack of a functional remove mechanism (since you say it doesn't work) will actually be a crime in New York state, where the site is based, if the state assembly passes the anti-spam bill in the next few weeks (already passed the state senate). Heck, I think if any messages were sent to Michigan, it was already a crime.

Mistake? Sending the spam may have been a mistake. Harvesting the e-mail addresses was deliberate. The addresses should never have been in the system for the newsletter to be sent to. Thats like saying "oops, I didn't mean to send you that nude picture of your wife, it was a mistake." Maybe, but what were you doing with it in the first place.

There are rules against spamming for a reason and if your organization is not professional enough to either follow the rule or face the music for not following them than they need to rethink their place in this business. Some juvinile people might enjoy slamming CB about how it's members react to this sort of incident, but did you consider their might be a reason why CB has their e-mail address and SN doesn't?

Oh and about needing penile enhancement. Sure, I could always use more!

Thats the thing: Sending the email to everyone was NOT a deliberate action. Keyword: Not.

And we'll get right on fixing the Unsubscribe option.

Good for you, you didn't mean to send out the e-mail. I'm still trying to figure out why you harvested them in the first place.

"I didn't mean to have this open fifth of Jack in the car, officer. It wasn't a deliberate action, so you can't arrest me!"

This is akin to saying that they harvested the list so they could print it out and use it for wallpaper in the bathroom.

They use the CB e-mail list for TP along with the wads of money they are making at their first class site. I'll bet the hit counters are registering more traffic from CB than anywhere else right now. This whole topic is helping them get the hits.
You're right guys, it was all a HUGE plot to overthrow CoasterBuzz. Right.

We are perfectly happy with the community we have now. We know not evrything about the site is perfect, but we still like it the way it is.
