DDR bug has hit hard

I'm still sitting here in MN with StepMania, a Mad Catz dance pad and no way to connnect the two together.

CPLady, does anybody in the west 'burbs have PSOne to USB or PSOne to parallel adapter? I'll be in town Thursday (folks live in Canton) and would be glad to pick some up.

'Playa, I live in Canton. I asked my son (who was being pissy since I interrupted him playing a game and he got killed). He said you can get one "on the internet", but wasn't very forthcoming with info I may just be too busy to cook his dinner tonight.

At any rate, since I have a couple days, I'll do some of my own searching and will fire off an email to you if I have any luck.

CPLady - you just brought back memories of my mom running the vacuum in front of me when I was trying to kill the Mother Brain or Quickman or something. She sure got grumpy fast when I would yell at her! ;)

CoastaPlaya, I don't think that there are any PSX to USB adapters that work with DDR. Something about you can't press two buttons at once. PSX to Parallel might work though, but I can't really say since I've never done it.

Playa, here is one I bought from BUYnSHOP.com for $4.95. At the time I bought it it was free shipping, so it wasn't a bad deal whether it worked or not. Turns out that it worked perfectly, and the driver (provided at the site) is Dance Pad compatible (recognizing individual buttons as opposed to axes, allowing double steps).

This is definitely the cheapest one, and works great for me on XP and DWI (Dance with Intensity). I have since bought the PSX version of the game, but still use the adapter for other things.

EDIT: Here is a great site that summarizes all of the PS-PC adapters: http://junta.cromas.net/adapters.html

Yes, yes I know about the PSX-LPT connectors I can purchase over the web. One small problem...I wanna walk into a store, point at it, say 'gimme' and walk out clutching it.

Can that be done anywhere in Metro Detroit? Or even Toledo? I could leave for CP early and pick it up on the way.

My son says: You can probably find one in a store, but you won't really know if it maps the direction keys to buttons or axis. if it maps to buttons, you are fine, it will work with stepmania. But if it maps to an axis, then you won't be able to do two directions as once. He says it MIGHT say on the box.

Stores to check around Canton would be:

Game Stops in Westland (wayne/Warren Roads) and one in the Westland Mall as well. Best Buy in Westland, although the Best Buy in Novi is "30 times better". Circuit City (also near Westland Mall) might. The kid thinks it would be a lot easier to get it on the internet because you are more likely to get something that actually works right off.

Email me if you want some actual phone numbers, but I'd think once you are here, you can just pull out the phone book.

Hey Playa, if you're coming to CP this weekend let me know, fool.

I'll be working on MF.

And maybe we can get his ass on DDR so I can kick his ass too.

The classic "mod" for soft pads appears to involve using packing tape to tape the pad down, then covering it with hardwood floor covering and stapling it down around the edges.

I'm getting the strong impression that the best bang for the buck is the soft pads (Red Octane Ignition pads in particular) with the dense foam under the arrows so you can feel them. That's my biggest problem right now, and the reason I miss a lot of down arrows.

Those are the pads we have...but I still have some trouble with the down arrows, although I contribute that to not being as young and agile as I once was.

We tried taping the pads to pieces of plywood, but wthout anything securing them directly under the middle of the pad, they still bunched a bit in the middle and one tore. Duct tape (wonderful stuff) repaired the damage.

First of all, it's not fool, it's foo', foo'.

A little stereotypical humor and everybody thinks they're in the 'okay-cuz-I'm-down-too' club. Well, don't try this at home kids. I'll have you know there's official cards for that--to spare you incidental old-school beatdowns. "Wait! Wait! I've got friends--Owwwwww!!!"

Second of all, I've only had a thread open on my possible visit since August 28th or so. I think I posted on a site called uh, like GTTP or something where you can read the horrifying details.

Third of all, nobody's getting me anywhere near a DDR machine. Like the secret manual tells you, "Just nod yo' head and be all mellow about it, like yeah I could do that, but I'm jus inspectin' all you jive turkey sucka fools today."

Fourth of all, are you working Friday?

" Still looking for Metal Gear, though(cough!)........ "

You mean the original Metal Gear for the NES? I wish I'd seen this post when I was still in Chicago this weekend. I have it and havent played it in at least ten years. How bad do you want it?

"Fourth of all"? Now, I don't know where you got YOUR manual, but mine clearly states that lists longer than three items end with "Finally".....;)

Lastly, DDR still stands for Dudley Do-Right, the baddest flume East of the Mississippi....

And fifth of all, who said I was done yet?

As much as I'd like to meet you, Playa, riding coasters in da snow aint my idea of a good time. Although Saturday looks like it will be tolerable. Maybe....

Yeah, I'm hearing the same thing from my Mom. It might wind up being Saturday instead. I guess I really wasn't looking to spend a whole day @ CP, so Friday looked good.

Then again, it was supposed to snow here yesterday, then today, now tomorrow. Driving in the 'iffy' season in years past has trained me to wait for the weather picture to come into clearer focus.

Hey Jeff, are you going to be at the park friday night? I'm always up for some DDR, anyways, last time you ran away for some skee-ball while Kara and I played. ;)

Personally, I find that the soft Mad Catz pads are the best I have used. I have tried 5 different pads and found that after a quick and easy "mod" my pads still work fine after 6 months or so. I used ultra-thick cardboard for a base and put cardboard over the 4 buttons I use for the game so I can feel my way over the mat.

My dealings with Red Octane have been lame and I don't recommend them to anyone, but that's a whole other story together.

Matt Bacoulis and I played on my two soft mats for hours this past weekend and had no trouble at all with those soft pads other than moving to the left or right a bit. Sticking velcro to the bottom of them should fix that problem.

By the way, Den, if you didn't get my e-mail, Gameworks in Columbus just upgraded their 3rd Mix machine to a DDR Max 2 7th Mix! I played a few games last night and it works fine.
