thanks for the link, Jeff. After seeing the deluxe ignition pads, and at price that isn't going to break me, I decided I would order two. Kinda surprised my son that he's getting them, but I figure I owe him for his patience with me when we play together.
It seems now I am his "constant" in game mode. When he's on a difficult level, I keep him alive by doing the lower level. We've been playing the DDRMax. I miss my Boom Boom song, but playing this is the most fun exercise I've ever gotten.

Oh yeah... that's one of the things I don't miss about working in mainstream media.
I'm probably going to break down and buy better pads. Watching Natalie play on them last week (she unlocked all of my MAX songs ;)) seems to indicate to me that there's less missed stuff on account of the pads. I'd really like the Red Octanes, but I don't think I can really justify that cost difference.

OK....that is it. I have never even set foot on DDR, but now you all have got me wanting to try. We have a PS2, but all I ever see is Time Splitters 2, Grand Theft Auto.....enough! By reading this forum, I know exactly what I need to do. Wish me luck.

See, you hear about it enough, you eventually have to try it. Then it's all over from there...

These, allegedly, are the ultimate, but I'd really like to hear from someone who has been using them for awhile:
http://www.redoctane.com/ignitionpad.html
I bought a pair of offbrand ignitions from Ebay very similar to the first link Jeff pointed out, and have been playing on them for about 3 months now. The only problem that I had with them was that I didn't like the foam that came with them, so I replaced it with a couple of pieces of thin foam I had from when I got hardwood floor put in, and haven't had a single problem since. They register perfectly and don't slide at all, but that could be because I'm playing on tile.
As for RedOctanes... I've never played on RO Ignitions, but I did play on the "RedOctane Pad" and didn't like it at all. But thats just my opinion.

At the risk of sounding like a braggart, I would like to announce that I think I became a maniac player tonight.
Previously I could only pass a few easy maniacs but stuck mostly to trick, because I had tried some harder songs and failed miserably. But tonight everything just clicked and I passed four 8-foot maniac songs (Holic, B4U, Absolute, Healing Vision) with B's on the first try.
It's amazing how good it makes you feel when you can read that many arrows and complete the steps without even thinking.
Anyway, to get waaaaay back to the original question, it has taken me from about Labor Day to tonight to get to the point where I can pass really hard maniac songs. Woo-hoo! (pats self on back repeatedly)

The good thing that MAX has done for me is work in a lot of 1/8-note steps into slower songs, which makes them easier to deal with when you get to the faster stuff. I'm finally getting comfortable with 5-step songs, and even a few sixes.
I have to stop and remind myself that I've only been playing for about a month, and Rome was not built in a day!

I got up the nerve to try DDR for my first time at Cedar Point in early October. I have watched so many times. I am sooooooooooooo addicted. All I can say is I can't wait to finally get the PS2 version, and save up enough money to get an arcade version of my own to put right my living room (for a kickass good workout and stress reliever).
The game is too much! I love it! I am not a "dancer" but if I can do it somewhat good anyone can do it! Long LIVE DDR! By the way, the copycats SUCK!

(a rocker, not a dancer, but looooooves DDR.)WOOHOO!

I only wish I had MAX. I really can't afford a PS2 at this point. But really, Konamix, plus the fact that I am within a 20-minute drive of 6 different arcade versions including two DDRMAX2's, is enough for now (I suppose). ;)
Tina - actually, although I've only played it once, Pump It Up is really fun.

That's the copycat! OK, I tried it but it wasn't the same. Still, it was kind of fun but not the same as DDR.
By the way Den, I LOVE your BAT photo! I only got to ride it once but I wish I had taken photos of it! Who knew it would become such a legend? :-)

Pump It Up is worth playing if there's no DDR around (as in the Columbus Dave & Buster's.... c'mon, get with it!).
Thanks about the photo. I got that from my dad's extensive photo collection, which also includes a shot of the Bat from the Eiffel Tower. That was in 1983 so it was already closed. :( No rides for me.

Interesting. I've never seen a solo machine before.
By the way, the lame-ass Dave & Busters in Westlake (Cleveland) does NOT have a DDR machine, but rather that imitation thing with all of the diagonal arrows. Total crap.

Because the topic was started by the webmaster. Everyone is just enjoying themselves :)
There indeed is a DDR MAX2 7th Mix machine at the LaserQuest on Gratiot between 14 and 15 mile. If you go on the weekends during peak LQ time, expect to wade through a group of people watching or waiting. $1/3 games.
