Sean - I did get your e-mail - however I didn't know it was a recent upgrade as I had never played DDR at Gameworks until just a couple of weeks ago.
I was just kind of annoyed that their 7th mix is very quiet, whereas the DDR USA in the back of the arcade is ear-piercingly loud. Still, I played for 2 straight hours (though I did break for Guitar Freaks, cool game).

I still think official konami soft pads work best. One solution that many people dont mention is Velcro.... of course, you can only use it in certain conditions, hehe. I use a huge wooden board that is held to the cement basement floor with industrial strength velcro, so it doesnt move an inch. The two soft pads are screwed down to the board, next to eachother, and I put a layer of slippery coating on the top. I've had them working for more than a year now, with daily abuse. Konami pads are they way to go.... they are still working perfect for me, as long as you modify them not to move, you should be fine.
DDR Extreme (follow-up to MAX2 in the arcades) is location testing right now. 230+ songs. Here is the current songlisting from the 50% completed version (taken from Bemanistyle.com; sorry Jeff for the long post):

Notes
Paranoia Survival slowly speeds up from 135 bpm to 270 being the only paranoia to have speed change. It also appears only as your 3rd song.
The Legend Of Max starts off at 330 BPM and is said to go faster (only slightly more than Maxx Unlimited) and is only available by getting an AA on Paranoia Survival.
Sakura is "One More Extra Stage" and you can get it by getting an AA on The Legeng Of Max. Konami Reps said this may change.
BAG is 65 BPM and has a difficulty rating of 10 on heavy.
The music for the "How To Play" screen has changed back to the DDRMAX: 6th Mix music.
The Announcer in Extreme is the same as the MAX/MAX2 announcer minus the "Let's Max!" when you start a new game.
The Font for your judgement on screen has changed to the font used in GF 8th/DM7th.
The gameplay screen is similar to Max 2's gameplay screen only with more of a 3-D feel to it.
The video for "Love Love Sugar" features Pop'n Music characters.
The video for "Graduation" features Tokimeki Memorial characters.

"Pessimists are the world's happiest people. They're either right or pleasantly surprised."
Oh, man, that sounds sweet! It's got most of my favorite songs. And I love the songs that change tempos..... i.e. Era, Healing Vision, Wild Rush..... so that new Paranoia should be awesome.
How is the BPM on .59 "funky"? It doesn't even have any weird off-beat sections or anything... and the maniac is pretty easy (one of the few I can do!).
The songs that throw me off are the fast ones with long off-beat sections like Trip Machine and Matsuri Japan (trick)..... they just mess with your head.

A day is a drop of water in the ocean of eternity. A week is seven drops.
I get screwed up on anything with 1/8 steps over five-foot songs.
But that shall come with time as well. I can run with the kids this closing weekend for sure!

When I was trying to learn 8th steps, I played Holic (basic) over and over. The time signature is really weird and it helps you learn the timing of them.
Why is it so gratifying to get respect from a bunch of little kids anyway? I got some applause just for doing Drop Out trick the other day from a bunch of fifth-graders.... even though I had just come from another arcade where I saw a guy get a 700 combo on an Oni course (that's five maniac songs nonstop, and if you get three goods in a song, GAME OVER).

Le roi est mort. Vive le roi.
Thanks Great America!
Cause of my MAD DDR SKILLZ I guess.
I wasn't really playing very well. They were all just not that good.
I can nail Holic pretty well, and most of the songs that use three steps with an eighth in the middle (one has a lot of those, just can't remember which). It's when you take stuff like that and make it faster than I choke.
My cousin and I finally beat Afronova basic, but just barely. That was a struggle.

Then I would move up to the trick versions of Absolute and B4U. Both are moderately fast (but much slower than Afronova) and they both have several runs of five 8th notes, but nothing harder than that. B4U only has one jump, and Absolute has some corner-to-corner jumps if you have trouble with those.
Those are the first two trick songs I could manage.
(btw, I'm never gonna let this thread die...)

Oh yeah- I love Dynamite Rave trick. What a great ending, with the staggered eighth notes and then the three eighth-note jumps. Not a good one to *learn* jumps on though! For that I'd recommend Make a Jam! trick or Genom Screams basic.
In skill level, B4U trick is "too easy" for me now, but it still remains one of the most fun to play.

Welcome to PKI-goers guide to making crap pads good pads....
I have a Mad Catz...had it for a year...hasn't torn...hasnt slipped...hasn't bunched...why you ask? Because I used the pkigoer method! WOuld you like to know! I guess I'll tell ya.
Step 1: Go to Home Depot and buy yourself some masonite (smmoooth wood composite), some hardwood floor covering, some black duct tape, some two way tape, bout 20 foot of 1 inch baseboards (optional...for looks and i could only buy it in 10 foot increments here) and the smallest amount of black housepaint you can get(once again for looks)
Step 2: Go home and grab your el-cheapo mat and measure it for dimensions (they varie slightly). Then go out to your saw, and cut the masonite two inches larger on all sides. Take you masonite SMOOTH SIDE UP and cover it with alot of two way tape, all throughout the board except the outer 2 inches. Take your mat, make it as smooth as possible...and carefully lay the mat over the two way tape so it is square to the masonite. Press down your mat, and jump and slide over it a few times to get it truly...STUCK.
Step 3: Take your hardwood floor covering (clear plastic stuff) and drape it over your mat. It may require two strips depending on the brand of covering you bought. Pull the covering as tight as you can and staple it to the bottom of the board. DO NOT STAPLE THROUGH THE MAT.
Step 4: Take your black duct tape and tape along the sides of your masonite, with about 3/4 inches of the tape over the mat, and the rest of it going over the side of your board. Once you go around all of the edges, you may quit if you find the look fine with you.
Step 5: (requires a mitre box or a mitre saw). Take your baseboards, and measure the sides of the masonite. Then proceed to cut the baseboards so they will surround the masonite. Make sure to make the corners at a 45 (anyone who knows anything about carpentry knows this). Use finish anils or screws to secure the basebaords to the masonite.
Step 6: Use your black paint (any home paint will do) to paint the baseboards, and the bottom of the masonite if you please. Let it dry before playing.
FINISHED: Your finsihed product should play wonderfully, and be immune to the pesky plagues of bunching, sliding, and sensors slipping. Note that some very basic carpentry skills are required to do this, and it will run you at the very MOST, and thats if you go to some overpriced lumberyard and get everything precut and buy satin enamel paint, about 50 dollars. I may take some pictures of my pad and post em to my site, but that's if I have time. Enjoy, and I hope I was somewhat clear.

or the lazy-man's version:
Step 1: Order metal pad from eBay.
Step 2: Nearly kill self trying to open package with box cutter.
FINISHED. ;)

Yeah, I've heard only horror stories about metal pads. I've yet to hear even one good story. I'll risk my $19 Mad Catz pads with the "standard" mod. :)

Jeff,
Once you have Afronova basic down, the trick version may seem easier to you than the basic version. At least that is what I thought. It may take a few games to get it down because there is a lot of hopping going on but it is a blast to play.
pki-goer,
I agree with you. Those Mad Catz pads do hold up with a slight mod. I have two of them and they are still doing awesome even after 7 months or so of hard playing.

All DDR Fans...
The absolute best way to go is to build your own metal arcade pads...even thought it takes a little $ (around $125) and a little construction time, it is well worth it. At one time, I too owned several soft pads, but at the expense of buying new ones every three months, ghosting arrows and the pads slipping, I decided to go metal....It's just like playing in the arcade (except it's missing the lines and the slot for quarters) and I think my arrows are more sensitive than the arcade. The only thing it is missing is the back bar (and I'm working on that!) I've even gone so far as to build a second pad, so that should further the suggestion that the effort is well worth it...
Now for a little personal ddr history...I was introduced to ddr by Sean F. and Robb A. during a trip to California last January and since then it has been all downhill As far as ddr games go, I have imported japan ddr mixes 2 through 5, favorite being 4th mix; I also have all of the us releases, and I am eagerly awaiting ddr max (us) on 10-29. Ten months later, I am working on 7 footers and enjoy an occasional 8 foot here and there; I'm not big on freestyling, but I enjoy watching others fs..I have even made a cd of all of my favorite ddr songs to listen to when I can't be ddr'ing. My ddr fever/sickness is that bad
Pad construction pics and general comments can be found here... http://members.socket.net/~drevil/ddr.html

Good photos, but you really need to describe how your switches work. The single greatest failure point of any pad is the switch contacts, and you've not described how you built them.
