How long did it take me? About a month.
I was at WDW this June and played DDR- Disney's Rave (Jap. import) in the Space Mountain arcade at MK and was addicted. The week after I got home I bought a PS1, a mat, and a DDR game. I've been playing since.
About once every two weeks or so KicksTheSky, Robodud and I have a little DDR get together. When STChick is in town she comes too. It's a great way to get some exercise.

Well, I started playing in January.
First week of January to be exact.
Ever since then I've been trying to play at least once or twice a week. I haven't been doing a very good job of it since I came back to school though. I don't really have the time to play very often since the nearest arcades are either about an hour to the Pittsburgh one or an hour and fifteen minutes to the Cleveland one.
The first time we played (Blasters in Brighton, MI), Tobe and I looked like big stupid idiots, but when I found out there was a machine at a mall I knew pretty well, I decided to go out and try it. Miraculously, I could, by the end of my first session there, destroy most 4 footers. From then on, I had a steady improvement, winning the Basic division of the first tournament in which I entered, and improving at a decent speed for only being able to play once or twice a week (I could do all 7 foot Trick and Maniac songs by the beginning of March) My improvement after that was a little less rapid. I got sort of stuck in a rut in the 8 foot range, and then once I moved to East Lansing and could play a little more often (more machines in the area!) and play with people who were above my skill level all the time, the improvement started again. Now I'm quite confident in my abilities to play any random song at any level, with a few modifications (hidden, sudden, shuffle, etc) and do well.
And now it's time to master doubles....

Thanks for SAVING THE WHIZZER!! it couldn't happen to a better ride...
Ok... I didnt read through everything.... but lemme tell you 2 things:
The US DDRMAX soming out for PS2 at the end of october will be THE BEST DDR home mix EVER made out of all of them (including Jap)... trust me on this one... get a ps2 JUST for this game, you'll thank me later.... I will re-emburse the cost if you are not fully satisfied (I am being TOTALLY serious jeff....) ... Oct 29th people!!! I ordered a mod chip for my Jap PS2 so I cna play this american game... it will be OUT OF CONTROL....
Second, if you dont have a tutor to "teach" you to play it can take up to about 3 months to understand how to play well (that's how long it took me, on my own).... however if somebody 'good' helps you along in the process it is a LOT easier to pick up in even a few days (assuming you play for a few hours at home)

My son got DDR for the PS2 in early June. I played it a few times over the summer, but started playing a bit more primarily to get some much needed aerobic exercise.
We decided to try out the arcade version at CP on our last trip. I did pretty well with the one steps (Boom Boom, and Have you ever been mellow), but completely lost it on the next level up.
My son who is fantastic on the upper levels and tricks found the arcade version to be a bit "different" and didn't do as well at home.
So...to answer the question, this old lady can hold her own on the simple ones, but I'm still having some trouble on the moderate levels. Sigh.

I tried once with Davie the Luv Monkey at SFGAdv, and I utterly sucked...but now it's time to hook my PSX back up for some practice after a quick run to my local gamestop...
And Dave, if you're reading this, we need to practice before we see Kara again...
PS - Expect a TR from Davie for yesterday...what an awesome trip!!!

I have to admit that I, too, have started to fall down the slope of DDR. Unfortunately, I find that it bothers my bad ankle if I play for too long.
I do have one of the home versions (PS1 Konamix) and a pad (Mad Katz -- it works pretty well, but I need to put something under it so it doesn't slide around so much on my hardwood floor). I figure if nothing else, like CPLady I can use it for exercise -- I think long-term it'll even HELP my ankle, as long as I'm careful.

I was wondering how long it would be until someone recognized that. :) I agree, the wait for new episodes is killing me, especially with THAT cliffhanger. ("Oops...")
The Season One box set should eat up a BIT of the upcoming coaster off-season. (To swing this back to a coaster-related subject ;) )

GregLeg, purchase one of those mesh things for use under throw rugs. That's what I did. Put the mesh down first, the pad on top, and it helps to keep the pad in place. Works well on berber carpeting as well.

Well, I have exactly two games of DDR to my lifelong record. Both on a 4th Mix at a (mercifully deserted) mall. I do not consider myself to be the athletic type, and I don't have the best hand-eye, I mean foot-eye coordination. (Perhaps cause I hadn't gotten the 'feel' of the dancepad, so I had to keep glancing down and re-allinging my feet).
As I said I was at a deserted mall, at an empty arcade, at about 5:45pm on a Sunday. I decided to pop in three tokens just to see what the 'deal' was. My first shock was when they had the volume turned up to about 15 on a scale of 1-10.
Hmm, maybe home version sometime, all the fun, none of the attendant peer group humiliation!

Yeah, it's tough having a coaster off season. I buy DVDs presale at a certain outlet that gives you a free rental for ten weeks, use the card to get Farscape DVD rentals for "free", gives us some option of hope for entertainment(even though we tend to have seen them bunches). It's tough, I almost wish I had this rhythm stuff, as it's warm here off & on all winter, feels like the couple of rides we got 'round here should be open, but...........
Actually, I think it's fun to watch two people playing DDR at the same time. The movements are near identical once they get it down.

That's exactly what I had in mind, actually. I just need to get out and find one.
I'm surprised there isn't already something like that on these pads, to be honest.

If you anticipate playing a lot at home, I highly recommend picking up a metal pad. I got mine for $99, which is expensive but reasonable for what you get.
It weighs about 40 lbs. so it's a serious piece of hardware. It's the exact size as the arcade pad, so there's no "orientation" period when you go to the arcades after playing at home. And it pretty much feels like the arcade, with no sliding, movement, bunching up, etc.
Mine is a BNSUSA pad from eBay, but there are lots of good options out there, including the MyMyBox 6-panel pad and a new "deluxe" pad from BNS.
