Breast feeding mom upset with Six Flags Great America

Posted | Contributed by Chitown

A mother was asked to leave the wading pool at Six Flags Great America while breastfeeding, citing health concerns. If found true, the request would violate Illinois law.

Danimales, I was talking about men in general. Most see a boob and associate it with sex automatically, even if it's breastfeeding.

Some may be uncomfortable with a woman breastfeeding in public and I think it's ridiculous. It's in no way improper or uncomfortable, at least for me.

Now the fanboys with the t-shirts that are too small showing their hairy bellies...now that's another story. ;-)

Happily, there is no legal protection for fashion disasters.

"I'm sorry sir, you're upsetting the guests. I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to leave. Alternatively, you can buy a shirt in our gift shop. Can I recommend something in 3XL?"

^^Blanket pinned to her swimsuit no less!

Dan: *Whose* comfort level? Apparently, the general comfort level in Illinois is that public breastfeeding is okay. The cited law is evidence of this. If someone is more sensitive than this 'general level', then pretty much too bad. They can go around and try and convince people that their way of thinking is best or in the words of Joey Eischen they can just "suck on it and like it" (pun intended).

We have a lot of freedoms and rights in this country. But, contrary to popular belief, we do *not* have the right to never be offended. We do *not* have the freedom to always be comfortable.

And again, I ask you, what was so unreasonable about what she did?

Wahoo, to answer your airplane comment about sending her to the bathroom. If she is in her seat no. If she got out of her seat and walked up and down the aisle, yes! There is a time and place for everyhing. If that was her only option in the pool then fine. I can't recall the last time I noticed this in public. Which means most people try and keep it private.
"Hee-hee...boobies...hee-hee."

It is unreasonable because half of the population thinks with their Johnson.

So, I completely don't see the distinction there. She's allowed to make the people in her row uncomfortable, but not the rest of the plane?
Most of the time the row is occupied by the rest of your family! I think Dad has seen that before!

This mother (and the father not to sound sexiest) should not be walking around an amusement park with kids this young, they should be at home taking care of them.
You forgot she should be wearing a dress and apron, cleaning the house and having dinner on the table for her husband before he gets home. Oh, and she better get her knitting done and the laundry clean.

What decade are you from?

If all you saw was the babies feet then I dont see a problem. If you could actually see it then I would have a problem. Would it affect me no. But if people can scold Janet Jackson about what she did on tv then why not this lady. The arguement was there are kids watching tv. Well there were kids in the wading pool. But all you saw was the feet. She did the right thing and i applaude her. The lifeguard should be retrained about the law in Illinois. The people in this forum commenting about how she has a right to do it and it doesnt matter well sorry but contrary to what the constitution says it does matter. We live in a society where people complain all the time and things get changed even though you have the right to do it. And for the people saying she shouldnt be doing it well thats like withholding food from you. I stand by what she did by covering herself and anyone else who plans to do it to also cover theirselves Not for my sake but for the sake of people who will complain.
Row is occupied by the rest of the family? My wife travelled with my son many times without me.

I don't know what it is like where you are but down here in Florida breastfeeding is fairly common. VFG would have a heart attack.

VfG: and if it wasn't family? Still okay, or banished to the bathroom?
Here is a more detailed story on this incident.

The lifeguard was told by the mother that a law is in place in Illinois. The guard actually thanked her and went to see his supervisor. It appears the supervisor told the lifeguard that it was a health issue when he returned to tell her this.

Jeff: you forgot about the martinis. There should be a pitcher of martinis.
Chitown's article also contains the following:

Under the Illinois Right to Breastfeed Act, enacted in August 2004, a mother is allowed to breast-feed "in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother's breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breastfeeding."

So fooey on the "get a blanket" crowd, too!

spongebob...you DO know that infants get baths...don't you? And, they get carried around once in a while, ride in cars, etc. Heck, some infants (GASP) actually get held by their older siblings.

Yep, as strange as it may seem...babies are not made of glass.

whene you give the baby a bath do you splash its face?

When is the last time you slipped in a wading pool? Please. You're either reaching for a reason that you hope doesn't make you look like an idiot, or you're the most cautious 12 year old I've ever met.

never been in a wading pool, just an hour ago i didnt know what it was

2Hostyl-

What was unreasonable? Well, to me, not much. Like I said, it's not like she stripped down completely naked and wrote her name on the concrete. She covered up, as the article states. Would I prefer she step to the side a bit? Possibly, but that doesn't mean I'm going to freak out and run to security to handle the issue. She's got a hungry kid and a boob; make use of it. I'd just walk by and go about my business... there's more important things to worry about, like finding an open lounge chair! :)

So why are men more likely to have a problem with it than women? I dunno, maybe because all growing up most (notice I said most) boys are taught that they shouldn't be looking at boobies.

And while I have no problem with the Illinois law regarding breast feeding, just because "it's law" doesn't mean everyone agrees with it. Abortion is legal in this country, and there are just as many people that are okay with as those that are not.

Wait, lemme guess... abortion and breast feeding are two different things... WHOA! ;)

Wow. I'm just flabbergasted. Can someone be so sheltered that they think breastfeeding in public is bad? The only people that have a problem with it seem to equate it with sex, or obscenity. How is feeding obscene? Do you people that say this is wrong consider yourself a 'christian'? You do realize that Adam and Eve were naked until their banishment, don't you?

This is such a non-issue. The lifeguard made a mistake. People shouldn't intentionally try to offend other people. However, People shouldn't also get offended at silly things.

Go to other countries where Boobs do not equal Sex, and you're liable to see a woman walk around in public without a shirt on. Is it because of some animalistic sexual need? No. It is simply because Breasts, though errogenous (sp?) zones (more specifically the nipple, when men can expose in public here) are not sex organs.

Sex is not wrong. It is one thing in the world that is totally right, when you adhear to morals (which we won't get into because most people on here will have differing morals). There is a right and wrong about sex, even the law dictates that. However, breastfeeding has NOTHING, nadda, to do with Sex.

Grow up, guys.

P.S. Yay! Toons Posted!
Well, I'm done beating my head against a wall. I'm heading home now...and for some strange reason I have a hankering for a glass of milk and an oreo cookie.

But, I'll eat it in the privacy of my own home so as to not offend anyone.

I come home from work and find Nipplegate?!
