Breast feeding mom upset with Six Flags Great America

Posted | Contributed by Chitown

A mother was asked to leave the wading pool at Six Flags Great America while breastfeeding, citing health concerns. If found true, the request would violate Illinois law.

Read more from The Chicago Tribune.

Just something to note....everyone keeps saying it is men who have a problem with breastfeeding in public...but obviously you didn't read the article. The lifeguard in question was a woman...

And, yes, Spongebob, babies do *GASP* splash and get their faces wet in the pool. And my 2 year old plays in my 36,000 gallon inground pool with me and we dunk her in the pool all the time. She thinks it's fun.

But, I'll eat it in the privacy of my own home so as to not offend anyone.

The difference here? I'm not so overly sensative so that you eating Oreos and Milk offends me if you do it in public.;)

And while I have no problem with the Illinois law regarding breast feeding, just because "it's law" doesn't mean everyone agrees with it. Abortion is legal in this country, and there are just as many people that are okay with as those that are not.

Never intended to suggest that everone agree. Quite the opposite, I encourage differring opinions. However, if an opinion is proffered that thinks my view is "wrong" I require those challenging me to provide some basis for their dissent. Otherwise, I dismiss it as worthless blather.

As for the law, I'm just stating that there was no need for the lady to modify her behavior. Because the law *is* the law, the lifeguard had no right to bother the lady. The lady was clearly in the right.

If you dont *like* the rules, try and change them. See the whole "Roe" thing ;)

everyone is mad because she was breastfeeding in the pool well what if she had another kid in the pool now ask yourself if you would drag your kid out of a good time so she can find a changing room.

never been in a wading pool, just an hour ago i didnt know what it was

And yet you have your panties all in a bunch about the "danger" to the baby at the park. Nice to see a good informed opinion!

True, but it DOES mean she had every right to feed the baby where she did.

Hey! NO outside food or drink! Its Six Flags. If you want breast milk you must pay for it at the concession stand=)
redman822,would you dunk your 4 month old baby in your 36,000 Gallon pool?*** This post was edited by spongebob64 7/15/2005 8:16:16 PM ***

what the hell are you talking about?
spongebob62, I would dunk my four month old baby in a pool. (I don't have kids, but if I did I would)

It happens all the time. It is called "drown proofing" your baby. They offer classes like that all the time at local swimming places.

ARN&R is gonna have a field day with this topic...
With the exception of one or two people, you all missed the ONLY offensive thing about this story. Would you like some spit, urine and feces laden over chloinated water on your plate before digging in? Did she have a right to do it in the pool? Absolutely. Was it wrong or anyone elses business? NO. Should she have at least made provisions to clean the childs dinner plate before serving? YES. Otherwise grow up and get over it.

Jeff said "Douche because your menstruation smells bad" Please don't stop that. ;)

As far as "Stay at home and take care of your kids" goes, get real. The only problem I can see is if you don't keep the kid cool it wouldn't be good, otherwise what are kiddie lands for?

Tina, as far as loosing all clothes, NOBODY wants to see me without them, and too many sensitive things could get sunburned! ;)

Yeah, Dan. Too bad they're ON VACATION at a time like this!

Shame, for sure.

He was saying that for someone that didn't know what a wading pool was, you sure were getting all upset about someone's safety in a wading pool. How can you claim to be concerned when you don't even know what a wading pool is, much less anything about wading pool safety.

Oh, thats right, you're 13 and using curse words to make yourself look more 'mature'. Nevermind.

hell is not a curse word, and i was not trying to look mature,i was angry and confused, and i was not getting upset about someones safety i was stating my oppinion,i know what a wading pool is.i said as of an hour ago.

Is everyone else as shocked by this revelation as I am?

Tekno explained "what the hell I meant" perfectly well.

You know, some other people commented about the four month old baby being at the park. Even IF we conceed that point (and I'm not), what if the baby was a year old? What if it was the two year old that was still nursing? Should the mother STILL be confined to her home?

(Yes, it's perfectly appropriate and natural to nurse past a year)

SpongeBoy still doesn't get it.

Yes. We know you had been informed an hour before what a wading pool was. But that still doesn't make you an expert on safety precautions.

Shouldn't you be watching NickToons or something? I hear a new episode of Fairly Odd Newbies is on right now. Maybe you can understand that.

Nipplegate is a perfect name for this topic. I guess I understand why they had to make a law to make it "legal" to breast feed in public now. Like man can make a law to legalize what God created pfffttt

Dirty minded people will always look at things like this as dirty, even though you see more of a womans boobs in a bikini than when nursing. It is an excuse to hide their dirty thoughts.

Ed

I consider this a situation similar to taking snacks in school. She shouldn't take it out in public unless she's willing to share.
Irony revisited:

Men who cringe at the sight of a breast used for its God-given purpose while hoping other women's breasts three feet away fall out of their bikinis.

But let's tackle this issue head on. How much breast would anyone actually see with an infant's lips firmly latched to a nipple--even without a blanket? More or less than you'd see in a two-piece? Let's not forget the baby has a head attached to those lips that further obstruct any 'view.'

And has anyone who protests that women should express milk for later actually seen one of those units in operation? Even an electric model? What a royal pain in the you-know. And that's before you bring enough, keep it at the right temperature, pack clean bottles and nipples and risk wasting it on the diapers and wipes and extra clothes and other things you pack to keep babies happy when you COULD simply leave where it stays safe, unwasted and ready whenever it's needed.
