Adds going wild

I understand that you need to make money and all jeff, but these popups are killing me. I can see one, maybe two.. and 3 stretching it. BUt i get around 6 or even more! I think that is a little overboard. Seeing you've been having 800+ people here at the same time during the day, you've got to be hitting thousands of hits a day. 6 popups is rediculous, ease up man!
It not from the site. You must have spyware.

All who think Mean Streak needs a match taken to it say I.

I've logged out and used the non club site. I'm not having a big problem. I think coasterphil is right. You probably need to search your system and eliminate spyware and/or adware that's been dumped onto it without your knowledge. This happens all the time, especially if you use any file sharing programs.(ie. Kazaa, Morpheus, etc. ...) If you don't have software to do the removal, you can find some free ones online. Just do a search. Good luck and happy hunting!

Another suggestion, sign up for the club, if you're still getting pop-ups then you know it's your system.

Agreed. I surf the site logged out from time to time to see how it is (and check to make sure self-sold ads are running), and I'm not getting that many, and certainly not more than one per page. There isn't code to do more than one per page.

First of all, I think you mean, Ads, not Adds. Secondly, If you don't like the ads, become a member or get a pop-up blocker. This is probally the 20th complaint about ads that have been on this board. If you don't like it, leave. Let Jeff run his site advertisements the way he feels best.

Uh, I think that Jeff feels that pop-up blockers are basically stealing. I wouldn't go there.

Yeah, TOS said that is a criminal offense (*shrug*). Jeff, you said you got one per page.I think i ddint explain myself. Most sites i visit have one or two popups at the front page, maybe in a couple other ones, than it is done. This one, i get one or more per page, all the way to the forums. I'm not saying to rid them, because i know if i joined the club, there wouldnt be any, and that is a legit sales pitch, but for some reason, i just get alot of popups from this site. Its more than average i guess.

As for Spyware.. i have AdWare, and run it weekly, but still get the popups.

What's hilarious is I've been the one millionth visitor to this website and many others around 25 times... ;)

I really don't have an issue with the pop-ups. Yes, they are annoying at times. I just tune them out and close them whenever I visit. I understand it's a necessary evil, and I don't mind being inconvenienced a little when I get on the site. Beats not having the site at all!

Ad-aware is nice, but take a look at Search and Destroy.

Closer to perfect than Ad-aware and the two together catch just about evetrything.

I personally like the ones that say "If this banner is flashing, you've been selected a WINNER!" Have you ever come across one not flashing? If so, let me know. ;) I don't see a problem with the ads, they don't bother me. Just let them do their thing and close them, that's my theory.

If at first don't succeed, find out if the loser gets anything.

I use my AOL 8.0 I.E browser and it to my surprise (it came with the new EMachines comp) it has a built-in pop-up blocking feature. As of now, the bottom of the window says "Blocking Pop-ups" and a number 5 next to that. So I suppose it means that 6 have been blocked so far while browsing Coasterbuzz. Kinda nifty :)

Yea with the ISP's begining to embed Pop Up blockers with their clients, I belive Popups will slow down alot. I belive that we are soon gonna be seeing 640x400 size banners replacing them. They have begun already on some sites.

Yep, on the beta for the new AOL, there is a pop-up blocker. For my current one, I had to download it, but its basically the same as the new one...(I'm on the AOL Beta Team, but who with AOL isn't?)

Yeah, block the pop-ups and see how much longer you can visit the site. Freeloaders.

I don't mind the ads one bit, but there is one burning question in the back of my mind....what happens the millionth time I'm the one-millionth visitor to the site?

Actually, all last summer GIF's didn't work on my laptop until I reformatted, so yea, all last summer I was not a winner. :(

On AOL 8.0, the built in pop up blocker has a function to allow pop ups to certain sites. Because I want to be a good Coasterbuzz-goer, I have selected this site's pop ups to be allowed, just to follow the TOS. :)

Actually, in AOL 8.0 the feature really isn't a blocker, it comes, but instead of coming up first, it is minimized to the pages status bar. You can choose to look at each one of the pop-ups (which is basically "restore" the window from the minimized state, or allow from the site. Either way, on my site, when i tryed a test page for pop-up views and without telling people and just me looking at the site, AOL "blocked" them, but they were still noted as viewed by my IP, so i am not sure.

Just an off hand question to Jeff. Is there a way to determine if a certain user accessing a page on your site that isnt registered is using a pop up blocker? I dont know if that information is obtainable at all, but if it is, couldnt you just block the site out to anyone using a pop-up blocker? I am not to familiar with all of the variables that come over with UserAgent ect in the HTTP request. It certainly would be nice to be able to do it though.

Either that or start blocking everyone that isnt registered that is surfing in from a known pop-up blocker provider like earthlink. I know a lot of sites now that wont serve pages from earthlink, which I know is starting to piss off a lot of earthlink customers :)
