CP on the lake

Are there any rules or regulations that would prohibit Cedar Point from expanding over Lake Eerie? I'm thinking like a coaster over the lake or a Navy Pier type of thing.

I think there are a few reasons why they don't. One is they don't own the land. Also I think I heard somewhere that it's incredibly hard to build over water. Another reason would be that it the ride itself would have to be over the lake, because it would be too hard and cost too much to put a station/build a queue over the water and Perimeter Road. The problem is space is limited in that area and It would be hard to put another part of a midway near the edge of the park.

Another problem with building over the lake is it freezes every year.

Does CP own and operate the marina? If they do, there's no reason they couldn't expand with a boardwalk or pier. Not that they need the space. ;)

Lake Erie is pretty deep, and they only own the peninsula I think. It would be too big of a problem for them to build over water, the lake freezes and it would probably break the cement.

Lake Erie is the most dangerous of the great lakes. I don't think you'd want to put million dollar rides over it.

Actually, on average, Lake Erie isn't all that deep. The biggest concern for building over the lake, even if the EPA would allow it, is servicing and maintenancing said coaster. To paint the track or do maintenance on it would likely require barges and that lake isn't calm very often.

If the coaster gets stuck out over the lake, what would you do?

Cedar Point does own and operate the Marina.

Two words: Konsai airport. Not that a similar approach would work for CP for many reasons. ($$ at top)

What does lake freezing have to do with it? Does anyone think that if Lake Rudolf froze that Raven would be damaged? What about Batman Knight Flight, built over Geauga Lake? Or the coasters at Indiana Beach?

Nonesense. If the park owned land extending into the lake and they were allowed to build why wouldn't they if they wanted to?

Freezing and the thick sheets of ice that go along with it kinda make building a coaster out into Lake Erie impossible. During the spring thaw, the huge sheets of ice, sometimes a few feet thick, break up and move. Any support structure for a coaster would be bent or crushed. It is just not feasible to build out into the lake.

Small lakes do not have large ice flows like a Great Lake does.

Not to mention that CP did have a coaster built into the water at one time....a wooden one at that.

Lake Erie is *not* the most dangerous of the great lakes. Lake Superior is.

I really don't know much about the freezing of the lake. I can tell you that many steel structures in the Delaware river(Philly/Trenton area) have been crushed and severly damaged, if not lost, due to ice this winter. I would think the same may happen on the lake if the ice shifts.

You people confuse Sandusky Bay with Lake Erie.

With almost complete certainty I will say nothign will be built on the lake.

Sandusky Bay on the other had would be feesible but extremely unlikely.

There is no reason, CP has plenty of room. Look at the footprint of a coaster the size of Maggie. It takes up little room. Take a look at an overhead view of the point. There is more room then you can shake a stick at.

I can think of 7 spots off the top of my head where they could build a large coaster. Cedar Point DOES NOT have a space problem.

Not sure Moosh, but government regulations would make it virtually impssible to build anything over the lake at this point and time.

Vater, just pointing out then CP has no need to build over the Lake or Bay.
