This might be a solution, but I don't know if it's very economical. If Cedar Point built footers out in the lake, they could encase hot water pipes or heater coils amongst the rebar in the concrete, and when the lake froze, they could fire them up, keeping the ice around the concrete footer columns melted. I'm not sure if this would combat any ice shifting; however, because I'm not sure how much it can shift at once.------------------
It's still me, here from the beginning back in 1999. Add 1500+ posts to the number I have in the info section if you care about such things.
That would not work. The ice can reach several feet in thickness and is very destructive when it starts to move. The ice has reached thickness that allow snowmobilers to ride out onto the ice. Ice fisherman have even driven their pickups out onto the ice. It gets thick!
In the spring, it starts to break up into big sheets and the wind, blowing across the lake moves these sheets with great force. If you look at a beach area in the spring, you will see massive pieces pushed ashore.
Regular footers would be pushed around like nothing and the steel supports or the coaster would get twisted like pretzels.
If CP were ever to get permission to build out into the lake, they would have to build a breakwall around the area and have massive footings or piers. Like ten or 15 ft. in diameter just like the ones used to dock ships or barges. Just not cost effective.

That's a myth. It has nothing to do with being scared, it has to do with adding to their maintenance budget, nothing more. I asked "The Man" himself.

No, I believe that honor belongs to Lake Superior, after all it is Superior.

The name "Superior" has nothing to do with the reputation of the lake. Lake Erie IS the most "dangerous" of the five Great Lakes because it's the shallowest. The fact that it's shallow actually makes it MORE of a hazard, especially with waves and storms

But the name Superior does not relate to it's danger level, it was named Superior due to it's location. From www.great-lakes.net,
The first French explorers approaching the great inland sea by way of the Ottawa River and Lake Huron referred to their discovery as le lac superieur. Properly translated, the expression means "Upper Lake," that is, the lake above Lake Huron. Kitchi-gummi, a Chippewa Indian translation, signifies Great-water or Great-lake. A Jesuit name, Lac Tracy, was never officially adopted.
Also, on a site that details the wreck of the Edmund Fitgerald (the most famous of all the Great Lakes shipwrecks) waves were as high as 35 ft at 7pm on November 9, 1975 causing it to sink. The sinking of the Fitzgerald was later turned into a song by Gordon Lightfoot in 1976. You can see a line by line explanation of Lightfoot's song here.

I didn't take low depths into account and yes those can become quite an unexpected danger as well.
Thanks for backing me up Redman. ;)
