Top Thrill 2 faces extended closure for modification

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

From the official Cedar Point website:

Top Thrill 2 is currently experiencing an extended closure as Zamperla (the ride’s manufacturer) completes a mechanical modification to the ride's vehicles. Once the modification is complete, Zamperla, the Cedar Point maintenance & operations teams and our third-party ride inspection partner will conduct a thorough review before approving both the modification and the reopening of the ride.

Though we cannot yet confirm a reopening date, we will provide updates here.

We know our guests are excited to experience this incredible roller coaster, and we share your disappointment that we are not able to operate it this weekend. We will do everything possible to reopen Top Thrill 2 as soon as we are confident we can deliver the ride experience that our guests deserve.

Yesterday TT2 had all three trains running more or less all day. Operations were awesome. New launch every 85 seconds (on average...but hey you have to do something while waiting in the queue).

The downside? Our last ride was on the black train, in the coveted row 10 (back seat).

From the moment the backwards launch kicked in, there was an uncomfortable vibration...it disappeared during that amazing surge up the spike, but immediately returned once we re-entered the straightaway and got worse once the third launch kicked in. I can only describe it as mind-rattling...like a tuning fork got hit underneath us and we were along for the ride.

Maybe this is just something that happens towards the back? Maybe it was an anomaly? But it was significant enough that my wife grabbed the Advil after we got off.

Ride #1 felt nothing like this.

EDIT: After posting this on P-Buzz and asking a few non-buzzer friends (yes, I have some), the "word on the street" is that the black train is the only one of the three like this.

It was certainly the only ride like that we had.

TT2 has been down for the last 3 days. Some speculation is that it's related to the heat. No idea if that's true, but his is the first sustained hot weather we've had this year. It was #!$#1 50-something degrees when I went last weekend.

High temps reduce friction creating the risk of overshooting the rear spike which as we know does not have a stopper.

It was still cool when I was at CP, and didn’t notice much different with the steel coasters of Holiday World and KI but I can report that all the wooden coasters responded quite favorably to the hotter weather with extremely intense and fast rides. The Raven had near Voyage intensity on my last ride on it, Legend was hauling, and when the Racer hit the final breaks you could still feel the upstops spinning. The Voyage and Beast were their typical excellent selves and weren’t intensified like the others due to their trims. Did love the modifications made to the Beast this year though, it’s great to get two pops of air on hill 2 and 3.

Heads up, TT2 is testing a new restraint, instead of having a red bent piece of metal connecting the lap bar on the outside of the train these new restraints have a straight support that is padded. Sadly, these restraints are more restrictive, I’ve been er had to do the walk of shame on that ride and ride it multiple times yesterday but was kicked off this morning when I sat in this modified seat. Currently all 3 trains have it in row 5 right side.

I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean. Obviously I get the red bent support piece, but now it's just a straight padded rod? Also not sure how it would make it more restrictive.

Yeah, I'm thinking this is a necessary fix (would love to see a pic). I rode TT2 a couple weeks ago, found the flaw and still have bruises on my right side because of it.

Riders sit higher in these new trains, so the rotation around the downward twist is amplified. If you aren't rigid and allow yourself to ragdoll in this twist, your torso can whip around to the right and twist outside the seat at the end. Unfortunately, this occurs right as the train is pulling out of the dive, so there's tremendous downward force on your torso as it's twisted outside the seat, and you absolutely cannot pull yourself back around until the track flattens out.

The restraint did it's job and kept me in the train, but my right side got crushed against the edge of the seat and is still painful today. Methinks if this were to happen to taller people, it could possibly squish their innards to the point of summoning lawyers. There are stickers telling riders to remain centered, etc. but this probably needs a physical fix.

I don’t know how it’s more restrictive but it was, I rode no issue in a normal restraint an hour later. Maybe it’s a calibration thing. The op even gave me a good push with no green light. As for visualizing it, on the outside only remove the red bar in that photo and then imagine a straight padded bar passing between the entry point behind the headrest to the lap bar itself and that what it is.

Edit: I’m an idiot and missed the other button:

I’m pretty sure you can upload a photo directly to a post here.

The twist felt aggressive even in last year's original trains. I'm kinda surprised that they haven't modified that part of the ride, because the dynamic is weird on the body, and I'm sure it's weird on the trains too.

Did you happen to ride in row 5? That would be the ADA seat that's been there since 2024, in fact many of the photos and videos that CePo posted of the ride testing in spring 2024 that seat is missing on the train.

EDIT: Just saw your picture you posted. That is 100% row 5's ADA seat

So there is no new restraint being tested? Good grief.
