Top Thrill 2 faces extended closure for modification

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

From the official Cedar Point website:

Top Thrill 2 is currently experiencing an extended closure as Zamperla (the ride’s manufacturer) completes a mechanical modification to the ride's vehicles. Once the modification is complete, Zamperla, the Cedar Point maintenance & operations teams and our third-party ride inspection partner will conduct a thorough review before approving both the modification and the reopening of the ride.

Though we cannot yet confirm a reopening date, we will provide updates here.

We know our guests are excited to experience this incredible roller coaster, and we share your disappointment that we are not able to operate it this weekend. We will do everything possible to reopen Top Thrill 2 as soon as we are confident we can deliver the ride experience that our guests deserve.

Great analysis, Vater.

One final observation to add: despite the vast number of installations over the last 30+ years that are essentially all still running, B&M occupies only 4 spots in the CoasterBuzz top 25. That says…something.

That’s an interesting point. I’d be interested to see a poll that park execs participate in that show the top 25 least problematic coasters. Or best ROI. Or…dare I say…best CAPACITY.

Nest question is how much of Matterhorn, has Disney replaced? Or maybe Vekoma has done it for them?

I would be curious to see the Arrows still running, and then by type, (and relocation percentages) Im sure obv multiloopers and suspendeds are hardest hit, and that minetrains are the most still standing.

B&M also has 31 rides in the CB 100, which also says... something. 🙂 Enthusiasts really like RMC rides, which dominates the top of the list, but I'm not really convinced that they're widely viewed as big crowd pleasers for normal people. It seems like they're one-and-done for a lot of folks.

I find most B&Ms boring to ride and ugly to look at.

Props to the inverteds though.

I haven't and won't do a deep dive, but it looks like only 2 of 8 shuttles are going, vs 5 of 10 suspended (and that's including the original Bat).

The shuttles were very much of their time, of course. Apart from reliability, they wouldn't be drawing big crowds even if you didn't have to climb 5 flights to the platform. But that's to the point - the B&Ms are not only durable and reliable, they retain their popularity. It's hard to imagine a future when people wouldn't want to ride Nitro or Raptor.

Perhaps Vater can put together a spreadsheet.

Me:

Jeff:

I feel like this pretty accurately reflects the overall perception of B&M. Their coasters are ubiquitous, and for the most part they are broadly popular--there aren't many that are actively bad. Yet very few enthusiasts would list a B&M coaster as their all-time favorite, Fury notwithstanding.

I kind of agree. The track itself is nice, but the minimalist structure, while I'm sure being less expensive and less of a maintenance burden, is not as pleasing to look at as a wood coaster or a steel coaster with a lattice structure, like the old Arrows or Millennium Force.

I guess I have just had the bad luck of having lots of first timers being at Cedar Point on the same days as I have gone.

"Well, actually...Orient Express from WoF is an Arrow, not Intamin."

I was generally of the opinion that B&M's, even my favorites like Apollo's Chariot and Behemoth, were very good but not elite. It matched my experience to see them filling out the top 100, but struggling to make the top 25. Then I rode Fury. Holy crap, is that ride good and so far ahead of the other B&M's. Is it coincidence that it also tore itself apart? I hope so, because I definitely want to see B&M making more coasters like Fury.

Boxy, but good.

Leave it to Andy to find the one mistake in the manually entered data.

Can't speak to Matterhorn, but just about all of Space Mountain was redone in 2005, and similarly, just about all of BTM was redone around 2014.

DL Space was built after MK Space and fully replaced when the structure was deemed unsavable, yet MK Space still hasn’t been replaced…

Oof, I think Millennium Force is an eyesore. Looks like repurposed power line pylons to me. Each to his own. I do think the arches supporting the older corkscrew models look kind of elegant.

I think MILF is beautiful, same with Magnum. To each their own I guess.

DA20Pilot:

I think MILF is beautiful...

Isn't that what makes a MILF a MILF?
