Valleyfair today announced the construction of a 185-foot Intamin Impulse coaster called Steel Venom, which is set to debut for the 2003 season. The ride will cost $8.5 million.
Read the press release from Valleyfair.
'Playa, I understand your frustration with VF not getting a B&M. I can tell by your past writings you care deeply about VF, as I do. But I think Jeff is correct about the cost fluctuations. I don't think at this point in time with the economy where it is and what has happened to SF recently it would be advantageous for VF/CF to spend $13 Million on a B&M. I still hold out hope sometime in the future we will see one at our park. Wait until SV is in I still think there will be room left for more expansion. I agree with you that this ride should have been placed inside the park and leave that area for a larger type coaster.

Cedar Fair's "park blueprints" are not based on having each park contain at least 1 B&M. Until last year, CP was the only park in the chain with B&M metal. WOF, VF, Knotts, and MIA are all void of B&M metal.
I agree with Playa on the horrible location. There are plenty of straight away places in the park to build this on to allow for a large future coaster without extending the flood wall. Even if they had to elevate it a little, the cost would surely go up, but could possibly be cheaper in the long run....depending on how future expansions go.
And finally, I can't believe someone actually said "bougie". I haven't heard that expression in a long time...at least outside of the Linkin Park DVD. "Bougie" is a word I feel is horribly under used:)

Waiting for the CP announcement to be made so that about 1000+ posts will be made complaining about it.
Playa where did you get the ten million dollar number from for Top Gun? the link you provided said something to the affect of "over ten million".
Uhhh.....over ten million is not quite 11 million, no? If it was 10.9 million or 10.7 million, it would be easier to say 11 million, right?
I'm sitting in my office with yard-high stacks of work and not enough time to find the exact link with the $10.5 million price tag, but isn't that sufficient proof?
I can't help wishing SV was built by WT's lift hill. The entrance/exit paths could have extended past Coasters and Atomic Pizza. It would have made for fantastic visuals from the train, from the hyper, etc and left the flat space in question open for future expansion. Oh well...
As far as the amount of the investment, this wasn't some astounding gift from the gods--it was VF's decision to hold on to their usual $3 million annual cap budget (a la Galaxy theater, Mad Mouse, Chaos) to save up for another big ride instead. Nobody did it for them, they did it for themselves.
As far as attendance numbers go, VF will probably stick close to 1.1 million visitors this year with crap for weather (2nd or 3rd rainiest summer in recorded history) and nothing new whatsoever. They can draw 1.2 million standing on their head. They've done that in the past with nothing more than good weather and a new theater. Frankly, I'd be shocked to see any numbers short of 1.3 million. VF marketing folks knew how to plug already...and I swear this year they got even better.
I have to say I like the name and the logo. I like them a lot. Maybe just a teensy bit over the top, but come on--it's a coaster. With all the 'vipers', 'cobras', blah, blah, blah, someone gave a fitting name to a coaster that actually looks like a snake. Why didn't anyone else think of that?
Well, with my campaign sign for B&M steel put away for good, I guess all I can wish for now is a wavepool and an Invertigo. That's more than enough to shut me up.

Couldn't they still build a B&M Inverted in the same spot, around and through SV? Several people are saying this ruins our chances, but if this brings in more people, they might be encouraged to build one. And, just because it is built in the space needed for a B&M Inverted, doesn't mean they can't build one in the same spot.
Couldn't they still build a B&M Inverted in the same spot, around and through SV?
Is it physically possible? Sure.
Would it be a lot more expensive? Better believe it! Crane operators would need extra time to maneuver supports and track segments around the existing rides. They'd likely need to purchase an insurance policy to protect against any potential accidents damaging anything, too. This is exactly why you don't see either one of SV's towers rising amidst WT's turnaround.
A small B&M invert on level ground would already be at the outermost edge of a VF capital expenditure year. The most VF has ever seen in a single year was $10 million ('96-WT) and the example I quoted of a $10.5 million B&M invert was the only one I know of that cheap. When you have to start adding extra for construction costs....it's just been pushed out of reach. Sorry.
Would SV attract more people? Sure--but only from among VF's home market. You're not going to get a million or two more people moving in to MN for it. Frankly, VF already draws very, very high attendance numbers for its market size.
But hey...an Invertigo is only about $3-4 million and still fun.
