Tomb Raider at PKI: Questions answered!

ShiveringTim's avatar

The only one I've ridded is the Texas Twister at SFWoA. Dorney Park as one over by Talon, but the name escapes me now. Worlds of Fun just opened one either this season or last year as Thunderhawk. I know that SFMW and SFGAdv both have one as well.

Here's a link regarding Giant Top Spins and regular Top Spins, sorta straight from the horse's mouth, eh?

After looking at the Alternative Ride Themes tab for the GTS, I have to wonder how the water portion of TR:TR will be?? :)

If the soaking is anything like what PCW's Top Spin is like then I *would not* suggest riding this on anything other than warm days!

PCW is at least nice enough to turn the water jets off in the morning and at the beginning and toward the end of the season; with some luck PKI will do the same and early season riders won't have to get drenched...as soon as it starts to warm up look out though, the soaking you get on these things is shoot the chutes style wet :-)

Questions yet to be answered (which I'm guessing will be spilled later today :) ):

A- How wet do you get? / B- Is there a chicken chute? / C- On the 'Florida Park' scale o' theming, how does it rate? / D- Besides stalactites and lava, is there anything of interest to focus on in the last room (considering you're spinning a lot/little)? / E- Somewhere in all of these TR:TR threads, I somewhat remember something about different restraints. Is it something other than a horsecollar holding you in? / F- How does Rivertown look (better or worse because of TR:TR)? / and lastly G- Is there an on-ride photo?

Just laying everything out in one convenient question package.....

-Chris

For how wet you will get I bet it will be like ThunderHawk at Worlds of Fun, there is a little lake beneath you that has water fountains that shoot at you.

I asked Steph to fill in some answers when she gets home, but I suspect that Sean (who rode at the same time) will likely be here sooner.

Yeah, this is the type of ride that gets people to travel from Cincinatti and its surrounding areas. Shame on them!

If the shoe fits, find another one.

PKI's intent is not to get people to fly halfway across the country. No park like this does that. Magic Mountain is not trying to get east coasters to fly out to ride X, they're trying to get SoCal out there. CP is trying to get OH to ride MF. Only Disney is a real country wide player, and also Universal.

Chris R....I definitely remember PKI saying there WOULD be a "chicken door"....I think they probably had a less demeaning name for it though...;)
Ok i only have one question. IF this is a top spin and im not saying it isnt, then what is the vechical with the wheels on it? Is that the top spin, or what? Because i dont know of any top spins with wheels on it!
Why are some people so pissed off about this? Nobody complains about Spider Man at IOA...I haven't heard a single person say "booohooo, IOA could have done so much better than a dark ride!" I think this will be very similar in nature to Spider Man, but instead of riding in a Scoop, you ride in this huge "theater-like" vehicle that is capable of moving you up and down, swinging you, flipping you, etc. Take a Scoop out of the elements that surround it, and it's not really that exciting. Take a Top Spin out of the elements that are TR, you still have a pretty damn cool ride. Now put that pretty cool ride in a Spider Man-esque environment, I think you will have an AMAZING expreience.

Do the giant top spins have different restraints than the regular ones. We recently rode the top spin at SFFT and it had perhaps the most uncomfortable restraints either my wife or I have ever experianced, and we not very picky.

here's a photo update from PkiGuide

Looks like some totally killer theming!!!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again....PCW has a MONDIAL SPLASHOVER, not a Top Spin. Cliffhanger at PCW is 0001 and Cliffhanger at Lagoon is 0002. The Mondial Splashover and Huss Top Spin have very little in common, except for the fact they both can get you wet.

Dang, no wonder PKI had to hype it so much. I guess thats the only way they could get people interested in a Top Spin.

Icarus, I'll say it- well, this is my first time saying it- but Top Spins and Splashovers are NEARLY the SAME rides. I've been on both, and they give the same ride experience imo. The only difference is that the rows swing independent of each other on the Splashover.

How does the GP know what a Top Spin is? Most of them will ride it "just because." I suggest you ride things before you cast them off.

Den, you don't have to miss Roller Soaker, because you should be able to ride it in your swimsuit. That is of course if you're comfortable in a swimsuit.

The word "definitely" is definitely the most misspelled word on the buzz.
Now Jeff, I can take on any rollercoaster, no matter how many inversions, but I just can't take flats. Spinning in a repetitive path gets me so sick. For example, I walk off the Trailblazer (I believe a huss falling star) with an intense desire to vomit. Will the spinning of the topspin force me to participate in a protein spill?

Welcome to Six Flags Great America, home of the fastlane and delay-ja vu! We have now officially been deemed the world-wide wait!

Okay, I'm going to do my best to fill in some blanks and offer my opinion.

Is the ride enjoyable?: Yes, everyone seemed to enjoy it. This was my first ride on a Top Spin. It was a ton of fun! What really helped was the fact that I was sitting next to some ACE members who were screaming like babies! The ride had some unexpected moments, which I'm sure are only offered the first time riding. Repeated rides would probably diminish the fun.

How is the theming?: Magnificent - PKI really surpassed my expectations. The entire site looks like an archeological dig complete with spider webs! They were consistent with the theme of the movie (statues and such) and I thought no detail was spared in theming. I've never been to the Florida parks so I cannot fairly make the comparison between TR: TR with the rides there. The theme is great, but probably not Spiderman caliber. The story is not quite as intriguing as I had hoped.

How wet do you get?: I rode in the front row center. I got some pretty nasty splashes from the “lava.” By the time the ride was over, the puddle that had collected under my rear soaked into my pants. My glasses were splattered. My hair matted and a bit wet. I wasn't dripping, but had it been warmer than 40 degrees outside, it would have been nice. I dried in a short period of time. I would compare it to riding a small flume ride - no major drenching. Just some pleasant spray. Consistent with other rides, I’m sure the amount of spray you receive is directly related to your seat position. Something to calculate for your ride!

Features of the last room?: The last room is enormous (it has to be to hold a Giant Top Spin!). You really cannot see what's happening when you set foot inside besides the seating. There are some lights on the floor guiding you to your seat and some overhead beams that are focused on the seats as well. The result is that you cannot see anything other than the seating. You can also see the operator in the little booth. That's about it. Until the ride is in motion, you don’t see any cool stuff. And there is more to see aside from lava and stalactites, but that's all I'm saying.

Is there an on-ride photo? : Yes – at the end of the path when you get off the ride. I'll post a picture of the cute little photo hut tonight.

Is there a chicken chute?: Thankfully so. It is in the second room, before you get on the ride.

Rivertown looks much better. The entrance to TR: TR is very nicely landscaped and the buildings are little bamboo huts. The entire area looks incredibly better than before.

More thoughts……I thought the ride was kind of short. Not a lot of spinning (for those who detest spinning, it’s tolerable). Are they running a shorter program to compensate for the pre-ride events? Is the length of TR: TR similar to other Top Spins? I just thought it seemed brief. I think I spent more time in the bathroom.

Unquestionably, take everything out of your pockets before riding. I mean EVERYthing. Invest in a glass strap if you wear glasses and don't have a strap. They certainly need to be secured.

Perhaps most of you know this already, but you do not get to choose your seat. Basically, when you enter the first room you are gathered into rows which will eventually become your seat. It’s like any other indoor attraction I’ve been on. Efficient, but you don’t always get the best seat.

Can I just say one more thing? It's HUGE! I mean, I was in awe at how large the ride actually is. I'll post a full article with photos later this evening, so be looking for that! I have a few shots of the general area, the restraints, the individual rooms and the theming. Oh yeah, the Lara Croft model too. She was great looking, but she only stuck around long enough to run around, wave her guns and pout. About two minutes. I guess it was too cold.
