Time for a Magnum love thread

Wicked Twister is smooth, Blue Streak is much more smoother now that they have added struts to the drops, which also makes for a faster ride! :) The lapbars in some of the seats on Magnum staple you on the drops, but that's why I keep the bar up with my leg.

The issue I have to raise is that I believe that many people's definition of "rough" has changed in recent years. The new B&M and Intamin rides are undoubtably extremely smooth. What was considered smooth ten years ago might be considered rough today. My question is this. Has Magnum really aged poorly and become a lot rougher in its 14 seasons of operation, or is it just that people's definition of "rough" has changed? I am not qualified to answer since my first Magnum ride was in 1998 and I have been an adict ever since. But I suspect that a lot of the people who are saying that Magnum has aged poorly didn't ride in the early years either. I know at least one Magnum enthusiast who said that Magnum was better in 2001 than it was in 1989 so for now I'm going to listen to him since he has thousands of rides (possibly even more than Dan) on it. Sure it can't be considered smooth by the standards of today's new rides, but I don't think it can be considered rough either.

As for my opinion, I love Magnum and CPlaya's post back in the day summed everything up perfectly. I love the view from the first two hills. I love the way you seem to hang up at the top of the second hill for that extra second. I love leaning out of the train in the pretzle. Of course I love the ejector air on the return hops. And finally, I love the way the ride dispatches and returns directly over the heads of guests on the midway urging them to challenge the ride! I'll agree that it may not be as smooth as the latest rides, but I know that Magnum will always have a special place in my heart and I will always ride it over and over each time I visit Cedar Point. I've yet to board a ride that has more character and personality than Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point.

You explained the point I was trying to make earlier much better than I did. Way back in 1989, computers barely had 1 MHz of computing power. The design and technology of coasters has progressed such that the older rides may seem rougher just because all the new ones are so smooth.

You want a rough ride on Magnum? You should have ridden it between 1989-early 1994. The 3rd drop used to dip way down which caused many people to come back with bruises and bloody lips because they would hit their heads on the seats in front of them. This kind of flaw would never happen nowadays because computers are used in calculating every last force exerted on the riders. They reprofiled the third hill, drop, and I believe some of the turnaround to remedy the problem...I just wish they would have removed the trim brakes altogether. That would make every ride on Magnum be insanely intense.

I do know maggie was a lot smoother after they reprofiled the drop into the turnaround. I have probably rode Maggie 200 times since 89 and to me it hasn't changed a bit other then not breaking your spine before the turnaround.

its always a CP thing on this message board. Ide love to see what would happen if there was NITRO love thread started.

I found at least one Nitro love thread and nothing happened (not sure what you where expecting). Like with Magnum, some people really like it and some just thinks it OK. I think its time to get over this 'CP gets special treatment' crap.

"It's always a CP thing on this message board" Let's see could that be maybe because this site "evolved" out of GTTP? Could it be maybe because most of the charter members are indeed CP freaks???
Not a flame, just a Po!nt!! :)

Now for my 2 cents worth (and I would consider myself a bonafide CP and Raptor freak and am quite sure NO one here would argue that :))
I ADORE Nitro-better than Magnum? Heck yes!! Even better than MF!! (gasp!!) There were a few steel coasters I got to ride during my NY to CA trip this summer and many of the steel coasters I loved more than Magnum. But have to say that Nitro was truly my favorite.
Maggie does rock however!! :)
It is after all all about PERSONAL opinion, is it not?

Heck, I started the thread and Maggie isn't even my favorite, Phantom takes the cake and then we have a slew of woodies that are better then any steel coaster I have ever rode.

Nitro has less hills then maggie but every single hill is filled with super high quality flojector air that lifts you gently then pushes you into the bar fairly hard. Nitro is much steeper, faster, more rerideable and comfortable, and has far superior airtime to magnum. It does not barly climb the hills it crests each of them at axactly the perfect speed for the radius of the top and the steepness of the hil causing according to a B&M pressrealease -.2 g's on every hill. You want a coaster that is engineered to perrfection, go ride nitro, every ride will be good. When you go ride magnum, getting a good ride is a crap shoot because it was not engineered well and based on two days of riding it at cp can be almost as smooth as meanstreak one day :-\ and as rough as a togo the next. NEVER bash B&M please, we all know that they ar emuch better and more fun then toomer era arrows.

Actually, Nitro and Magnum have about the same number of hills (camelbacks). And no, Nitro doesn't have more air than Magnum. I'm not bashing B&M either, they're a great designer, but with my only experience of a B&M hyper being Nitro, I have to say they should stick with inverts. And talk about respect? Please remember, Toomer and B&M are completely different eras. If you knew anything, you wouldn't bash Toomer, but remember all that he did for the coaster industry. And if you do want to compare Arrow hypers to B&M hypers, I can always remember sitting on forceless Nitro, barely making it over the camelbacks, remembering that if I was on Magnum, we would have been having mad airtime. Don't give me info on Magnum. I know why it was rated #1 for 11 years straight and WHY NITRO WASN'T. (P.S.- Golden Ticket still rates Magnum higher than Nitro.)

I love Magnum, it is my #1. Best airtime, the only coaster with stronger airtime is Phantom's Revenge, but Magnum seems to be the real deal. Every part of the ride is awsome!

I think one of the best views in the world is the top of the second hill around 9 or 10PM. You look to your right and it is pitch black, the train, wind, and people on the train are quiet as well.

I agree with everyone else that loves Magnum. It is the original record breaker, trend starter, and it has lots of class. I just rode it this past weekend(see trip report,) and I only found it somewhat rough in the back. The front seat is the spot. The airtime that coaster provides just can't be matched. It is easily my favorite hypercoaster.

I am sure if I had to make a top 10 list it would be in there somewhere. Gotta give CP and Arrow the props for starting the hypercoaster trend, and it's still one of the best. Maggie will enjoy many more years of satisfying rides.
