381 rollercoasters and counting. . . counting down for me to come back home to America. :)
Why didn't I think of this topic?
Actually, I have no clue why everyone seems to hate it. Actually, I just thought that everyone in the entire world loved Magnum, until I joined the site. I have ridden a good bit of coasters, even ones that people seem to like more than Magnum, and Magnum is still tied for my favorite steel, with MF (gasp). Yes, the two famous steel coasters everyone seems to hate at this site, are my two favorite. Frankly, I can't decide which ones better, and why no one loves Magnum. I don't know of a coaster that gives more air than on Magnum. And will everyone grow up already? Not every coasters perfectly smooth, that's a coaster for you. I like my coasters a little rough. Geez, go on the kiddieland rides if they're too rough for you. I'd like to see you people on the Crystal Beach Cyclone (not that I rode, but I've heard).

Whoa I'm the 88984594th Vistor to Coasterbuzz. I wonder what I have won.
Sorry for posting twice in like, ten minutes, but while reading the posts after I wrote my own, I have a message to Helios:
NITRO SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to bash a coaster, but when you bash a coaster that has SOOOOO much air, and put it in place of a coaster that can barely climb its hills, well.....that's a shame, and I am soooo sorry you don't have the same tastes for coasters as me.
I just don't understand how someone can hate a coaster, let alone Magnum. The only thing I can say about Maggie that hasn't been said is that she's old school. Before computers, before simulations, this unbelievable coaster was built, and 13 years later, still impresses people. Can any other steel coaster still say that today?
If you don't like her, don't ride her!

All I need is 4.5 million bucks and a half a mile long sliver of land and maybe someone could build me my very own Shivering Timbers. ;)
One thing I don't understand, is how so many enthusiasts complain about Magnum. They always want a ride that gives tons of ejector air time. Magnum is one of the only rides that gives you such a large ammount of it. and they complain about it. Yeah, its a little rough, but come on! I don't even notice the roughness, I'm too busy enjoying the air time and the awesome view.
CPlaya, I salute you for that speech!

Long live Shockwave!
Sawblade: You share my thoughts exactly. Raptor is the only ride at CP that could be considered to be better, overall, than Magnum.
Everything sort of comes together on Magnum. I think that a few of the people that don't like it are expecting way too much, and have most likely ridden coasters like S:ROS, Bull, Apollo, or even Force prior to riding Magnum. Magnum isn't rough, especially for an Arrow coaster (ok, save for the entrance to the pretzel turn.) No coaster in the world has a better vista from the top of the first drop, and none is as creatively worked onto their park's grounds.
But, to reiterate, I would be willing to bet that for everyone who's first hyper was Magnum, or another non-Intamin/Gio/B&M (that'd include me) Magnum will always have a memorable ride.
If you get too accustomed to the cushy airtime of an Intamin/B&M hyper, Magnum may be a bit of a shock. It doesn't have the grace of the newer ones. It takes you and tries to break your legs on the lapbar. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

You really need to get some more BRAN in your diet
Few points: First off I don't see how you people can complain so much about restraints and headbanging, etc. I realize pain is no fun, but geez, toughen up a *little* bit!
Second: CPlaya, that was a beautifully written piece. I almost cried at my cube! Well not really, but you get the idea ...
Third: When I rode Millie for the first time, our next ride was Maggie and when I got off Maggie, I said something to the effect of "Talk about a world of its own. I just went 93 mph down an 80 degree hill and it was incredible, but it was nothing like what we just rode!"
And Maggie was my first major coaster, how I could I ever NOT love her? :)

Speaking of Magnum...I have been working on a project at my company where we have people in from all over the place. One of the ladies is from Cleveland and she saw my wallpaper (a picture I took of Raptor at night) and we got to talking about parks.
Well, we started talking about WoA...she says she likes it more since SF took it over from GL, but that's another story.
Back to Magnum...we then talked about CP and she said it's been a couple seasons since she'd been to CP (she was there early in the 2000 season). And she brougt up the oldest and most time worn rumor of all time - "I heard that CP sold Magnum to some park in Japan because it was sinking." She was clearly upset about it - she said it _was_ her favorite coaster there.
I repeatedly told her that, in fact it was still there, but she told me that I was mistaken because she heard from a friend whose brother works in maintenance that is was sold and dismantled.
I finally had to go to the CP website and show her the FAQ stating that it was just a wild rumor that was created as an April Fools day prank and has grown out of control... ;)
Needless to say, she was a little embarassed...

Thanks Great America!
I mean, it was the coaster that got me over my fear of riding tall coasters (125+ feet or so) back when I was still a little kid.

To bash it simply because you are sick of the overwhelming support it or the park gets is absurd. I hate SF but there are still great rides. And for a coaster to hold onto popularity for so long can't be an aboration.
As for better in the past, i have found the Magnum to be as good as it ever was. And i have ridden it every year (like many here and unlike most who want to bash it).
I'll admit I haven't ridden it this year, so things may have changed this year... but I can NOT understand the Magnum-bashing that goes on here. I can NOT understand how anyone can think it's painful. I can NOT understand how anyone can think it's not fun. I'm 6'3", and have never had even the slightest pain on that coaster. Of course, I always ride near the front, so I can't speak to how the ride seems from the back... but still. I cannot fathom the constant bashing this ride gets. It's definitely a great, fun, smooth, fast, lots-of-air coaster with a killer first drop.
Having just returned home from the Point (first time trip!) about three minutes ago, this must be some kind of fate!
I will join in the Maggie love...in my honest opinion, it is the best coaster in the park. It does what it's supposed to do, and it does it well! The airtime was killer, the roughness was JUST right, and it lived up to every expectation that I had of it!
In the words of Satchel, of the comic strip Get Fuzzy, "I am not ashamed of my love."
I LOVE MAGGIE!!!

If you don't like Magnum, you don't like air. If you don't like air, why are you reading this on CoasterBuzz? I love this coaster. In fact, it edges MF for my favorite at CP. Call me crazy. If this is crazy, I don't want to be sane.
