SFoG Goliath Construction Update

I don't get the whole Nitro sucks either..

..however in the same thought, I don't get why people go crazy over it? I don't have a ranking for coasters I've ridden, but if I had to, I'd put it somewhere in the middle of the pack. Probably on the higher side of the middle, but the middle nonetheless.. </ramble>

Apollo and Nitro are not at all similar.

Nitro is fun but "over-engineered" [my term] to lessen the forces and make it more family-friendly.

Apollo's forces are more pronounced, less family-friendly.

And with that, you touched exactly on my deal with it.

I have fun giving the ride and it's fans a hard time, but in truth it's not a bad ride. I ride it at least once every visit to SFGAdv.

(note: what follows is opinion)

What gets me is the over-reaction it seems to get. It's a "B Class" ride plain and simple. Better than average, worth a ride, but not worthy of mention among the true best of the best.

I first encountered Nitro on the last day of a week-long trip in 2002. My confusion with the coaster was so strong and immediate that after a week away from home one of the first things I did was post this topic.

I dunno. I suppose everybody has their little oddball favorites or wacky non-favorites, but Nitro has been, since day one, a coaster that I just don't "get" the appeal of.

It ranks high on both Mitch's poll and Golden Ticket Awards. Keep wondering!

Fate is the path of least resistance.

Again, exactly where I'm coming from, 'Tuan.

I agree with ya, Gonch. I've never argued that the ride isn't fun. It's just not a thriller...for me, at least. But I ride it on every visit as well.

Hehe, I see in the wayback thread that Gonch linked to that I wasn't in Apollo's camp in '02. Just goes to show I *do* have an elephant's recollection of exactly WHEN my opinion of that ride changed...

I'm sure if I caught some trimless rides on *any* B&M hyper I'd be considerably more impressed....that "ERT session" had the longest lines of the trip....but they really did "let loose" on AC for us... :)

Of course, B&M could just take my advice and go for some 2-abreast trains that let the riders FEEL the ride... ;)

You mean kinda like...
uh..
what's that rides name...? ;)

You talkin' about SFMM's Goliath? Fun ride but it can't hold a candle to Nitro, Bull, or Apollo unless it had a few more moments of negative Gs.
SFMM's Goliath, IMO, p0wns Nitro, the Bull, and Apollo. I'm an airtime whore, but sometimes I just need a ride that will make my brain come out my butt.

Can't you do that by easily removing your head from your a$$? ;)

If I do that then where am I going to stick it? Gotta keep my ears warm somehow.

Giovanola is just one notch behind Intamin....excellent train design, nice FORCEFUL airtime (not enough *instances* of it, but that's on the parks), and absolutely brain-numbing helices....what's not to like?

I'm an airtime-lover myself, but Wow! do those helices pull g's like crazy....*almost* enough to make me forgive the lack of airtime hills...and definitely a more favorable layout (for me at least) than The Force...

Nitro's helix? Sure, it's fun...meh. :)

I really hope they paint the ties. It would look much better.

If I'm not mistaken, some B&M's have messed up paint on their brake runs.

What is it do you not understand about the rails having already been painted? They are grey. Those rails aren't an unpainted silver. They WERE PAINTED grey.

By mistake? ;)
Raging Bull is my #10 overall coaster. Goliath at SFMM is #26. However, the one hill that gave air on Goliath was far better than any on Bull, and the helix was to die for. But I loved Bull. Maybe because it was my first Hyper?

1. Phantom’s Revenge
2. Swamp Fox
3. Superman: Ride of Steel
4. The Thunderhead
5. Top Gun: The Jet Coaster
6. Villain
7. Silver Bullet
8. X
9. Gemini
10. Raging Bull

With Magnum XL200 at #11. Can you tell I like Hypers and Woodies? Also, Arrow and B&M each top out my top 10 at 3 entries each. Well 2 1/2 for Arrow ;).

I'm looking forward to Goliath at SFoG next year. It is giving me a reason to want to go.

LOL, that's what Ga. Cyclone and *Myndbender* are for, Clint...

Remember who *warned* you about Gemini... ;)
:)

bill, cannot IMAGINE how anyone could rank wood and steel coasters in one big messy pile like that....unthinkable! ;)

That downward helix coming up on the new Goliath looks amazing. Sorry guys, im from Canada and do not get the chances to ride all of these rides accross the United States like you others do. Take it from me, all rides deserve there own good remarkes. If you were in my position, only have been to Cedar point once in my life, SFDL about 4 times and to canadas wonderland about seven times, then you would appreciate all rides no matter what. Seriously though, thats the only parks ive aver been to in my life. Probably pretty sad right. Im going to go to SFGA for the first time in my life next year. Everyone tells me Nitro is the bomb. Im in for it or what. Look at my perspective though in general. I have alot of parks and rides to experiance yet. Ive never ridden a floorless, a Superman Ultimate flight or anything of that matte. The only time I ever went to Cedar point in my life was in 2000, and i waited 5 hours to get on MF. I nearly **** my pants and pissed. whatever the ****, you name it. Back seat at that.
Huh? Canada isn't far from the United States.. you're not in a parallel dimension, ya know. Just because I live in the US (Eastern PA, BTW) doesn't mean it's any easier for me to travel to California than it would be for you. It's just a matter of where you choose to spend your dollars on entertainment. There's nothing wrong with that, either, but don't think that we have teleporters set up to get to all the different parks (although that would be cool :) ).

As for few parks/rides? That's not sad. My coaster count currently stands at 80, and a lot of those were in the past 2 years. The rest were only because my mom happened to plan family vacations that included amusement parks when I was younger (and yes, I've heard the "I don't care if it's raining, we're going to have fun no matter what!" speech several times). As for my own travelling, I've only ever been to Dorney, Hersheypark, and GAdv before this year when I also went to KBF, SFMM, and Scandia (and hitting up PKD w/ a couple friends in Nov.) Next year I'm planning on going to Solace again, and also a massive road trip of just under 3000 miles to get all the rest of the Cedar Fair parks. Again, all this is just within the last year, so I guess I'm a late bloomer too :)

Umm, Tim. I have a feeling for WheelonSteel its a matter of only going where his/her parents are willing to go.

Oh, and 80? BWA HA HA HA HA HA! ;)
