The Sandusky Register is reporting that Space Spiral and Disaster Transport will be removed for a Bolliger & Mabillard wing coaster to open in 2013 at Cedar Point.

Yeah, I'm not saying there will not be "some" who may make a choice like that, but enough to make a hit on attendance?

I would actually argue that there are an equal number of nerds who will begin flocking to the park in greater numbers to do their "detective" work on what is going on at the park. Snapping pictures, looking for spray-painted markings, etc...all because of what has been said.

Ebony & Ivory.

Side by side on my piano, and balancing the coaster universe for all of us.

Great. Thanks for the earworm, Kevin. ;)

I don't think it's stupid for dad to say, "Why don't we go to that Holiday World place we've read about instead this year?"

How does that hurt CP's attendance? Yes, this year it is CP -1 and Other Park +1 in the visit column, but next year they go to CP instead of Holiday World.

BTW, how big of a hit did HW take last year because they built Mammoth this year?

You're welcome, Ensign. :)

All I am saying is that it's not out of the question to assume that a family may decide to postpone a trip if they know something worth waiting for is coming the following year. There is probably a reason why most rides are announced toward the end of the season or after. Partially because they don't have the plans or marketing together yet, and partially because they don't want to give people a reason to wait until next year.

But, again, postponing a trip for a year doesn't mean the trip is CANCELLED. It just means the trip takes place a year later.

Yep. And, if they started their PR push now, I would agree with you that it is early. But, this isn't a PR push, and my money says the impact is going to be small. Joe Sixpack hasn't heard it, and it won't affect his decision to attend (or not) this season.

I'll agree with you that the Powers That Be would rather even this small leak not happened, because no leaks are better than small leaks. But, small leaks are unlikely to make a material difference in this year's gate.

If something comes out in the Plain Dealer, then CP would be more annoyed and it *might* have a noticeable impact no this year's attendance (probably still VERY small, nonethless). The number of people who are aware of CP's 2013 Wingrider is exceptionally small, and even among those, the likelihood that it would forestall a visit is even smaller (Andy, I believe you may be "the one" person whose visit this year was postponed until next year).

Until word hits "mainstream media", impact is negligible at best...IMO.

Heh. I'm actually probably postponing my trip for multiple years since I don't get up into that neck of the woods very often (still no Maverick for me). But since I'm travelling alone this time, I looked at the odds me and my family would have a burning need to go to Waldameer in the future vs. the odds that me and my family would have the burning need to go to CP in the future and I decided to get the Waldameer trip done "for good." Once the kids get a bit older, we can all go to CP together and ride Skyhawk, Maxair, Maverick, and STR, and the new Wing Rider as well as everything else they haven't been on.

Re: Postpone vs. cancel

Yes, the trip takes place a year later. Which means it's an extra year before the family says, "Hey we haven't been to CP in a while. We should go." again.

but they still go :)

I'm sure CP's stock holders are much more interested in getting people to come more frequently than they are about whether those people eventually go once or not.

Yet here is a ride that deserves the hype and gets announced by accident.

Are you suggesting that any marketing effort going forward is pointless? I think that's a big stretch. If you really want to get down to it, people have been guessing the same thing that the Regisucker reported for at good year or so. No one is any closer to knowing what the name is, the specifics of the layout, potential themes, etc.

Not at all. They definitely should market a great upgrade like this. Hopefully they can still find some good angles to market despite the cat being out of the bag. It's really too bad this got leaked, as coasters in general are viewed by enthusiasts and the GP as "worthy" of a larger marketing build up than other attractions (sometimes rightfully so, sometimes not).

It's happened before, though, hasn't it? An early leak is not a travesty. People will still come next year, I promise.

Vater, the issue isn't about whether or not the guests will come next year. It's whether or not they will forego a trip this year because of knowing about what is coming next year.

I believe the answer is no.

Yeah, I meant this year.

Why don't they move Space Spiral...... replace Diaster Transport in the near future with another dark and better ride...... then also turn it into a flying coaster!!!!!!

They should also lower the price of the food at Pretzel Stand 4. And then save it as "Matthew's Sandbox".

Well, the Plain Dealer did have a fairly lengthy article on the new coaster, and it was report by at least two Cleveland TV stations.

That said, I doubt it will have any affect on CP's attendance. Many people go once a year, every year, it's not like the current line up of rides and attractions isn't enough of a draw. Besides, Luminosity and DA are probably enough of a draw to entice people to see what's new.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks, than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Kevin, that was awesome.

Rides have been moved before, even at Cedar Point, so at least part of Matthew's post is legit, in my opinion. The other part of his post, I believe, is either being misunderstood, or humor.
