Report says Cedar Point building a B&M wing coaster for 2013

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The Sandusky Register is reporting that Space Spiral and Disaster Transport will be removed for a Bolliger & Mabillard wing coaster to open in 2013 at Cedar Point.

To put my frustration on the family ride front in a different, let me say I am not yet married, but in my mid to late 20s. I am the oldest in a large family though and we try to all make it up to Cedar Point once a year together. Every ride they have removed in the past couple of years has been one everyone had ridden (even if we usually didn't hit most of them). The last ride they added that we could get everyone on was...probably when they created Camp Snoopy and added the Tilt'A'Wirl. Maybe there is something else, but I can't think of a single ride newer than that that everyone will ride.

From the Sandusky register (in regards to the 2013 coaster at Cedar Point):

"Engineering schematics show a proposed coaster with gravity defying twists, curves and trolls."

Trolls! Yes! There will be theming! Will it be the little doll trolls get you in the gumball machine? The Trolls that formerly were on the Illinios Trollway at SFGAm Fright Fest? Or the Trolls who used to inhabit Magic Mountain?

Kings Island's coaster isn't a Flyer, it is a err... Fly-

Okay, you got me. lol I go to KI more than any other park, but I guess being way back behind all the other rides on a dead end path made me forget that it was even there. That ride scares the snot out of me.

About family rides at CP, I would love to see something like Verboltin show up at that park next. Thrilling for the thrill seekers, yet not too scary for the jr. thrill seekers.

I also agree that more family rides need to be built. So many have been ripped out of the park over the years.

Ah... okay... just looked it up too. I gotta' remember, "this is the internet... Bing is your friend."

People use Bing? I can't seem to pull myself away from the Google long enough to give it a fair shake, so I can't really judge, but I'm not gonna change.

I'm more irked at the point that this coaster will defy gravity; I think it'd be the first thing in the history of the universe to do so

As the parent of a three year old thrill seeker I have to say that the offerings at Cedar Point are pretty limited. Sure they have two (technically three) kiddie areas, but most of the rides are repeats. With the exception of two rides planet snoopy offers nothing new that camp snoopy doesn't already offer.

As some people have already pointed out a family ride is something that the whole family can enjoy. The kiddie lands at Cedar Point offer very little in this department, either the ride only accommodates kids, or it is extremely uncomfortable for an adult to fit. Even the rides adults can fit in have seat belts that are so small that most adults cannot buckle the seat belt, and then the child and the adult cannot ride. When I think of family rides I think of log flumes, dark rides, observations towers, boat rides, junior coasters, fun houses, train rides etc. These are rides that have minimal are no height restrictions, and accommodate all sizes.

To be fair Cedar Point offers more in the family ride department than a lot of other parks do, but the number of family rides continues to decrease. It is also frustrating that the leadership pays lip service to family friendly fun while doing nothing to to improve this ride category.

And, no the up charge dinosaurs do not really count. That would be the equivalent in thrill ride category of removing Magnum to install the worlds largest sky coaster at $15 a ride. The removal of a classic unique ride does not equal the addition of a trendy generic attraction that you have to pay extra for.

Here's for hoping that a true family ride comes to the point sometime before my boy gets to be 48" tall. At that point I will be ecstatic to go to the point, but even then we will be at least a year or two away from riding the proposed new for 2013 attraction.

Lost Kause,

Im sorry but YOU are the one who is mistaken. There is a Vekoma flyer named Firehawk located at Kings Island. It was originally called X-Flight when it opened at Six Flags Worlds Of Adventure back in 2001. When the park shut down, it got a new home at Kings Island.

Are you MAN ENOUGH to ride this ride ?

For me, the bigger question is: will the Cheese on a Stick stand be removed? For those that don't know, its the last window in that block of concession stands, near the exit for DT. As far as I know, its the only place in the park that serves Cheese on a Stick. That would be a far greater loss then DT.

Did you bother to look at the previous posts? Krause acknowledged his error and moved on. Maybe you can too. And I'm not 100% sure, but YOU may be mistaken. I don't believe the coaster was called X-Flight when it opened, but was Batman-themed and named. I think it was changed to X-Flight when CF bought the property. again, I MAY be mistaken.

Cheese on a stick is served at a handful of other places throughout the park..not sure of the names of the places, but I can think of at least 4 more locations.

Who else want to pick on my about my mistake? lol

Here is a trivia question for only Coasterhound to answer... The prototype of this Vekoma ride was also relocated from one park to another. Where did it move from, and where is it located now? Also, why is the coaster at Kings Island not considered an exact clone of the prototype? Bonus question - How many names has this prototype had and what are they?

Peace, and love, and stuff. :)
