Popular coasters that you just didn't "get"

Oddly enough, I think Magnum's rather dated design, one which showcases the limitations of a lot of the methods Arrow used to design coasters, really worked in its favor. I don't particularly enjoy the turnaround, but those RCT-style bunny hops offer perhaps the best airtime ending of any coaster I've been on.

The back seat is what put Cyclone in my top 10. You get beat up, but the padding in those cars is so abundant it doesn't matter.

Since I started this thread 8 years ago to express my dismay with the night-time sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever, so-you-can-rest roller coaster...

(admittedly, I 'got' Nitro a few years later after power riding in the rain and have refrained from calling it Nyquil ever since)

...I figured I should be allowed to post my latest disappointment.

I305.

You'd think the lovechild of MF and Maverick would be a match made in heaven and it is...on paper. In real life they took the absolute worst parts of both rides and combined them into one big overhyped ride that failed to deliver in a way that no coaster since Nitro prompted me to write this post in 2002 has.

This time though, the rest of the people with me agreed.

Save a few, myself included. Granted, I haven't ridden since opening day when the first drop was trimless and the restraints were of the headbanging variety (although I didn't experience any). Got lucky, I guess.

Intimidator 305 pre-trims is one ride I'd like to go back in time and ride. I'd also like to take a spin on Raging Bull with the trims off entirely. I bet it's an entirely new machine without them.

A chill goes through my spine every time that someone praises Mean Streak at Cedar Point. I know it's hard to believe that someone would actually like it. But, I imagine that person in their back yard strapped into a cart while somebody is hitting it on all sides with a baseball bat. They have their arms in the air...going...This is awesome!!! WOOO!!!

I'd say i305 is pretty evenly split amongst enthusiasts loving it or not caring much for it. For those that didn't get beat up, it was a "religious experience" and for those of us who found it very uncomfortable to ride without holding on very tightly, it was a "I'd rather ride something else" kind of experience.

I am not a fan of Millennium Force *AT ALL*, but I think it's a more enjoyable ride than Timmy. And Maverick blows both of them away.

I thought Mean Streak was awesome the first year it was built. But, now it does make my spine tingle with fear everytime I look at it, and I haven't ridden it in years. By the way, I go to the point 2 to 3 times a year and just look at Mean Streak. What a pretty ride to cause so much pain.

I view Mean Streak's actual ride as fairly detached, in that it offers a slow, rough tour around a beautiful wooden structure. In some ways it is a guided (though not laterally) tour of something great that existed years ago.

This threads gone on a long time and I haven't read through it to see if anyone agrees.

The one I didn't get was Boulder Dash. Of course i caught it on a day with never a full train but still. The outbound was stellar "I Get it" The return. Less than Magnum, Hell, less than racers return at KI. Half a great coaster and therefore not capable of top ten to me.

^I originally felt the same re: BDash, Chuck. Subsequent visits have catapulted the ride into my top-20 at least, if not top-10. The first visit, I came away *loving* LC but not so much for BDash...thankfully I thought enough of the park to return.

You still have Zoidberg.... You ALL have Zoidberg! (V) (;,,;) (V)

I'm probably gonna get clobbered for this, but, Pheonix. It was fun, I enjoyed it, but I just didn't "get it."

Coaster sacrilege, I know. ;)

I didn't get Raptor at all. I had heard so much good about it that I couldn't believe it was actually that bad. It has not aged well and was the roughest B&M I have ever ridden.

Wow, really? Maybe you just happened to be on a bad wheel or something. I had pretty consistent good rides last year. That they seem to have permanently let go of any mid-course trimming has made the ride my favorite invert (Fire and Talon as close seconds).

KGC, it's good to know I'm not the only one who doesn't get the Raptor love, only in my case, it's not due to roughness. It's just due to me not totally getting the ride.

Also, I just added Patriot to my track record this past weekend. That's 1 more invert I like more than Raptor. Again, it's not that it's a bad ride by any stretch of the imagination. I think it's just overrated.

I'm not saying Raptor is the be-all/end-all, but like Jeff said, the thing hardly even taps the mid-course anymore and that just makes it all the better. I don't have enough experience with other inverts to say its the best one out there, but it is my favorite of the ones I have been on.

I think maybe, KGC, you just happened to get a bad ride. And even though you talk of it aging, you don't happen to be using "rough" rather than "intense" are you? You've been around here long enough that I don't think your confusing the two terms.

I agree with KGC. I don't "get" Raptor at all, either. I now refuse to ride it in any row other than the front, due in part to the roughness and severe snap into the brake-run in the back of the train.

Yeah, that snap can get you. One side of the train, I think it's the right side, is less severe.

That snap, along with the preceding helix, is probably the best part of that entire ride.

That ending is the major reason I dislike the ride. Part of the reason is the first time I rode it (2007) I was not expecting it and it gave me a severe dislike for the ride. I rode it again this year, and I will admit it was a little better, but not enough for me to change my opinion of it.

obxKevin, no I am not confusing the two terms. I consider B:TR to be the most intense of the B&M inverts but Raptor is just rough to me. Although I think even Alpengeist is a little more rough than most seem to admit. What I should have clarified is "rough for a B&M". I would still ride Raptor before any Vekoma SLC any day.

I have ridden 8 B&M inverts to date and this is my list:
Montu - without a doubt #1
Talon
Fire Dragon
Great Bear
Ice Dragon
Batman:The Ride
Alpengeist
Raptor
