It's a shame we never got married, Moosh.

No. That is an ignorant thing to say, and a scary thing to think you would believe. Most Christian leaders most certainly do not claim that. Only the "fringe element". Same as most Muslims don't want to kill you, most black people aren't on welfare, and most gays do not dress in pink leather chaps.

...but you do prove a point via your own prejudice. People OUTSIDE of a particular community tend to identify those in that group only with the fringe elements... the loudmouths, the narcissistic show-offs, the ones they see on the news.

This is probably why many people that just want to live their lives with the same rights and freedoms as anyone else think that the pride rallies are counter-intuitive and not a valid representation of the homosexual community.

The way you think about Christian leaders is probably the same way they think about you. You see Pat Robertson and assume all Christians think gay sex leads to earthquakes. He sees the pride parade and assumes that all gays want to walk down the street on a leash with their wang out while listening to techno music.

In case anyone skipped it, go back and read the post before this one.

Spot on kpjb.

Also I'm quite pleased to know that I can now refer to the fannypack-toting, gravy-craving, white sneakers/black socks wearing, socially challenged know-it-all's among us enthusiasts as the 'fringe', rather than defining element of the coaster nerds. (obligatory ;) )

The fringe element of anything is usually the vocal minority. The rest of us plot along in our daily lives because we have lives to live, but when you're so vocal about something and devote a good portion of your energy to it, everyone else figures that you represent the group you're claiming to represent, because anyone else in the group that isn't the vocal minority are already the normal, regular members of society that no one pays attention to.

That isn't to say we shouldn't appreciate and take note of each other's differences, but you can still be different and be a regular member of society.

Doesn't mean it won't happen :)

Tekwardo's avatar

Wait, so is that kind of gay marriage legal or illegal?

And every time someone brings it up, it gets more signatures...approximately 0.016 signatures per day, in fact. Awesome. :)

That was me :).

And that's cool...it's your right to not give a crap whether or not I'm regular.

...so to speak.

Mamoosh's avatar

Ya know...we laugh and joke and all but let's not lose sight on what's really important.

So that's why I don't care for Republicans! :) Not that I care much for the other party either, but you get my point.

The some Christians are homophobes, therefore all Christians are homophones, problem, is similar exactly the wrong thing to do when you're any minority, because as kpjb pointed out, it very much undermines the desire to have less bigotry by reinforcing another kind. Heck, it's not even productive when you're a majority. Look at the folks in NYC who are protesting a proposed Islamic cultural center down the street from the WTC site. That radical Muslims carried out the attack certainly doesn't make all Muslims terrorists anymore than Christians are because radical Christians bomb abortion clinics. At some point the cyclical stupidity has to end.

While I sincerely HOPE that at some point the "cyclical stupidity" will come to a peaceful end, I *fear* that it will end only when it spins out of control. The finger-pointing and name-calling can only end well if/when vocal leaders from a wide array of beliefs come together to denounce hatred and suspicion.

The most vocal, and visible, and "promoted" of any group will tend to be the fringe....they're ratings-friendly. Unfortunately, that also tends to increase mistrust and misunderstanding. Most people in virtually every "minority group" just want to be left alone to live in peace and seek happiness as they see fit. (For the record, my personal minority group....I'm a lefty)... ;)

What's really annoying about the whole gay marriage issue is that the government shouldn't be giving any legal status for marriages at all. Marriage is a religious institution and should be treated as such. The government should allow anyone to be in a legal union regardless of sexuality but not under marriage.
