Though track has been arriving for sometime now, Knott's Berry Farm has officially announced its new coaster, Xcelerator. The new ride will send riders up 205 feet going zero to 82 mph in 2.3 seconds. The full circuit coaster with be 50's themed with two trains. It will feature a 90-degree drop, straight down. Also put to rest are the colors, coral and "sea foam green."
Read more from The Orange County Register.
Still, this is why I always say "nothing is firm until the park makes an announcement."
Oh well...I was pretty close.
I was told that they will be quite unique. Much like the R-n-RC limos the Xcelerator trains will be fully themed as souped-up 57 Chevys. IIRC they will be 7 cars long but there is a chance both the front car and back car will consist of only one row each instead of the usual two and therefore trains will only seat 24 instead of 28. Let me 'splain:
The first row of the front car [1:1] will be removed and replaced by a decorative hood and headlights. That makes the second row of the front car [1:2] the actual first row. The last row of the back car [7:2] will be removed and replaced with tail fins and tail lights, making what is traditionally the first row of the last car [7:1] the very last row.
Some other comments while I'm at it: I like the name a lot. If fits the auto theme perfectly. This might seem nitpicky but I would have preferred the park spell it 'excelerator' but they didn't and that's cool.
I am under the impression that the launch will be towards Supreme Scream and the overbanked turn will be against Western Ave behind Coasters Diner. I do know that the launch will be at or below ground level BUT not underground. I speculate that they will make it appear as if trains are being launched on the ground -- or street -- and that the track will be hidden.
I wonder how the May opening will affect the attendance of Winter Solace in March?
There are no footers poured at all for Xcelerator. But there is work being done in the area. Supreme's queue is being rerouted. And the park has started construction of a new building around half of Skytower's base. It is a semi-circle shaped building being built on the north side of the tower -- the side across from where Xcelerator will be built. I believe these to be more game buildings.
Again...this is info I believe to be correct. Until the park makes these details known they are subject to change.

There are two trains - one is candy-apple red, the other purple.
The station for the ride will be made of chrome and glass.
Does anyone else love the sound of this? It will look so perfect, so fifties, and then "Whoosh"!Beautiful :)

And it DOES have a top hat! SO the article didn't say... The actual newspaper, the OC register, print edition, had a picture of the coaster's top hat with the article. if that isn't proof I don't know what is.
This is probably because if they are the intamin hyper restraints, they are identical to Perilous Plunge's. A media that doesn't get it will have a field day with that info.
Besides, we enthusiasts are probably the only ones that care about the restraints anyway. :)
how can anybody not know of the construction pictures? some people are just so slow...

If I ever owned a park, I think I would build it there. No real competition!
That sounds cool, have the track hidden underground so that it looks like the train is taking off as if it was a dragster. I can imagine the themeing, the launch would take place in a 50's 'street' like in Grease or Back to the Future.
On an off-note, Vekoma's site shows a ground-level, high speed, continuous LSM layout with the cars & track styled to a CART raceway.
