Knoebel's To Get New Coaster For 2004?

How far is Centralia from Bloomsburg? I've always wanted to check it out, but when I get to the area, the urge to go to Knoebels takes over!

I don't know exactly but I don't think it's very far. I always wanted to check it out. My sister went to school in Bloomsburg and I toyed with the idea of visiting during one of my trips out there but never did it.

There is a lot of information on it here.

Centralia is about 20 miles south of Bloomsburg, Rob.

Wantin' to check out a town that's slowly burning from beneath, huh? Oy....I remember reading about Centralia in 4th grade...the story they told was of a small child who fell through a crack that opened up in the street under him.

Very few people live in Centralia anymore. Living in Centralia must be like living in a suburb of hell.

I am planning my first Pennsylvania Amusement Park trip next year, and wondered if Knoebel's is worth going a little out of the way to visit.

I wouldn't consider it a 'Pennsylvania Park Trip' without a stop at the best there is, Knoebels.

Centralia is pretty close to Bloomsburg. Bloom is a nice place, I live there :). Knoebel's is deinately worth it, Phoenix is worth the trip alone, Twister is pretty good too, Whirlwind is crap, and HSTC is pretty good for a kiddie. You better try Cesari's Pizza also, pizza cant get any better than that....

Hell, I'd go 2692.4 miles out of my way to go there.

Centralia is pretty much a gone. About 15 years ago the government built new homes for the people who wanted to leave. There's actually only about 10 houses left if that of people who didn't want to leave. There's some areas that smoke poures out of the ground and the trees are scorched. In one area they had to close and reroute one road. If you walk down the closed area now there is a 3 foot wide crack down the middle about 50 feet long or so. From Knoebles Centralia may be a half hour away.

When did this turn into a PA geography lession?

That being said and talking about "small town" PA... You know you are in the middle of nowhere when you are in Sticks, PA. (120 miles from Knoebels, by the way)

Very interesting link coasterpunk. I didn't even know about this city in the state that I live in. I like the picture where the guy is standing in the 2 foot crack in the highway.

Don't ask me why, but I love to see ruins. There is a mental institution about 2 miles from where I live (no, I don't live there, although many believe that I should consider checking myself in) and there are tons of abandoned buildings... I have yet to work up the nerve to go inside of them (I'm not scared of what I'll find- I'm scared that the police will catch me, as I have that kind of luck) but they have fascinated me throughout the years nonetheless. Centralia looks like the kind of place that would fascinate me, too, but when I make the 2 1/2 hour drive to the Bloomsburg exit on Route 80, all I can think of is Knoebels.

As far as whether or not it is worth the trip, you could probably do a search and find a hundred threads that endorse a trip to Knoebels, regardless of how far you might have to drive. The place in unbelievable... some say that Disney is a place that creates magic... well, Knoebels is a place that IS magic. While I will agree that the area is a little too "sticks" for me (I am used to the moderately busy NJ suburbs), being close to Knoebels would be the only thing that would make me consider a move to PA!

Best reason to move to south central PA...

Three Schmeck coasters (and one pseudo-Schmeck) with in two hours at Knoebels, Hershey, Dorney and SFA.

That abandoned mental hospital... is that in NJ or PA? Not far from the NJ - PA line along Rt 1 north east of Philadelphia is an old abandoned mental hospital... Byberry or something like that I think. Kind of a spooky looking place.

Two other great ruined / abandoned places in PA... the old liner SS United States rotting away along the Delaware in Philadelphia and a section of the PA Turnpike (complete with 3 abandoned tunnels) in the western portion of the state.

Just a question about NJ... When you cross the Delaware River from PA or MD into NJ, you do not have to pay a toll... but you do have to pay a toll to cross from NJ into PA or DE. You don't have to pay to get in, but you do have to pay to get out... Hmmmm... is this a toll or some sort of ransom?

Nice. Way to rub it in, SLFAKE.

I'm in central northern NJ (Morristown)... the mental hospital I'm talking about is called Greystone. Its enormous with a ton of buildings, but only a handful are still used. The state wants to build a new facility there and demolish many of the old buildings before turning the land over to a number of municipalities that "meet" in that area, but they keep on running into problems. It doesn't help that the main building, only part of which is still used, has the second-largest concrete foundation in the country (right behind the Pentagon)... the costs to get rid of that thing alone have probably put the project millions of dollars over budget.

If you have ever driven into NYC from Jersey, you have to pay a toll to get out of Jersey but there is no poll to get back in. I think that Jersey will do anything to keep you in the state and makes it too easy for people to come back. Kinda like ransom!

Think about it.............you have to pay to leave the state but not to get in.

That's what I have always thought to be funny, how you can't leave without paying but you are never charged to come back in.

Still, despite all of the Jersey jokes out there (of which there are MANY), I think it is a great place to live.

SLFAKE -- that mental hospital in PA is Byberry as you suspected.

May the Schwarz be with you.

The worst thing about the tolls is that they stopped accepting tokens.

I still have 3/4 roll of the dang things!

Flying Scooter coming soon!

I'm surprised that they won't let you cash them in... I would complain about that! Its like selling someone a gift certificate and then not honoring it!

I'm happy that the NJ/PA toll plazas finally seem to be accepting EZ-Pass, which makes things easier for me.

They did have a cash-in period for a month or two after the switch but it was hardly worth making the 9 hour drive from Columbus, OH to do it. :)

Centralia fascinates me. The idea that an underground fire could burn for so long is just amazing. Fires need oxygen, after all. So how is all that oxygen getting down there to keep the fire burning after all this time? This needs research on my part :)
