Glossary

Someone just asked "what is stacking?" for the 8,192nd time on CoasterBuzz, and it got me thinking...

Perhaps CoasterBuzz ought to have a glossary someplace where people could get acronym expansions and definitions of jargon. Rather than trying to write one, perhaps the collective whiz-dumb of the community should be tapped with a form to submit a term, acronym, or definition. To make it really cool, set it up so that jargon-users can build links to a page (like a gallery window) that gives the expansion or definition. To make it even cooler, build a function into the message parser that automagically creates links to the glossary terms. I figure that someone who doesn't know what a term means could submit a term, and people who know could then submit definitions or expansions. Perhaps a list of current terms requiring definitions could appear in one of the sidebars, much like the news headlines on GTTP...

Just thinking out loud again...

I think that is a great idea...but how easy it will be to implement that I would not know. However if one were available as you stated I would contribute.

I'd love to have a glossary. Any volunteers? I actually have had a database table set up for it for about two years, I just never did anything with it.

I'd be willing to help out. Also, just to increase the glossary, just because some people are sometimes confused by a person's writing technique, have photos in there from the photo gallery section of the site, that way they have a text and visual aid.

Jeff, I'll send you my acronym list. That will get you started in a hurry... :)

I love the idea. I've thought of it before but never bothered to put it into practice. Hope it goes finalized.

OK, so jimmybob is the official compiler. I asked him to contact you Dave for the abbr. He's gonna build a spreadsheet which I'll eventually pipe into the database.

YAY!!!

Yeah, if coasters WEREN'T men we'd have Raging Cow instead!;)

Good thought, but the ones who need it most won't use it. It's just like a spell checker in my opinion.

If at first don't succeed, find out if the loser gets anything.

I think its a great idea. Also, for new enthusiasts a list of abbreviations would be helpful for things like SLC and ERT. It could also include park abbreviations (i.e. SFGAm and SFGAdv are often confused) Just so everybody is on the same page.
I just sent jimmybob a copy of my acronym list. As long as I am sending stuff, I probably ought to send Jeff a Rollback update, too... :)

As the annoying real estate commercial airing around Columbus says: "Thanks, Dave!"

So far, I've sorted out the abbrevs. into parks and coasters. I'll start sorting the rest out over the weekend and get into the actual dictionary part of the glossary. I'd welcome suggestions! (click here for my email)

But HOW will this help people *translate* gator-ese....;). I guess they'll just have to ask when it comes up....:)
Mark, glad you picked up on that!

Gator, that's why we have the Translatatron 3000. Of course, one of your recent posts caused a complete meltdown... Repairs are under way! ;)

Sorry jimmybob....gator got a little caught up in the (March) Madness....happens every year about this time...:). Glad to hear the Translatatron wasn't permanently damaged, LOL. The archives will show that this same mysterious disease got me last year, and the year before....have I really been around THAT long....;).

The glossary is a great idea whose time had come....still gonna be tricky for some, what with the manufacturers' "marketing terms" though...;)

Just a quick update for everyone... I broke up the "glossary" into 2 sections for now: Abbreviations/Acronyms and Terminology. AA is pretty much completed, and I'm about halfway through the Terminology section. When I get that done, I'll have some People In The Know(tm) give it a look through.

Of course, just email me if you have any questions!

I'll be interested in seeing if any of the 'easter eggs' in the acronym list survived... :)
