Dorney in 2003

To make more money? At least that's why they would want to build a hotel, I'd imagine.

I don't expect to see Dorney building a hotel... they need as much land as they can get for parking and the park. Dorney is much more of a local park than a destination park like Cedar Point.

But Cedar Point wasn't always a destination park, it had to be built and marketed that way. I have no idea whether that sort of thing is in the works for Dorney, but I don't see why it couldn't happen, per se.

Dorney itself might never become a destination, but Allentown has the potential. I would prefer that Dorney buy the land that is available and use it for the park, and let someone else worry about building hotels for now.

I know how Dorney could get more land available for the park. There are three "groves". Food Fest Grove, Carousel Grove, and Lazer Grove. I would bet any amount of money that the only one that is actually used is Food Fest Grove.

They should get rid of Lazer Grove for future development. Food Fest Grove could get brand new picnic tables. Not saying they are in bad condition, just think they should get some new ones. Carousel Grove should be taken out and (not sure if this is possible) an interactive Sally Dark Ride should be put in its place. I would love one of those!!!

Here we go again...

"I would bet any amount of money that the only one that is actually used is Food Fest Grove. "

Really? I'm game - just let me know how much you have and where to sign.

On many days throughout the season Dorney books full all three grove areas, and then it's still a tight fit. Also, two of the groves in question were just built in the past 5 years or so, hardly a sign of having extra groves sitting around just waiting to be replaced with rides.

Laser Grove is pretty ugly and out of place, but when it comes down to it, it's still regularly used.

Carousel Grove is used often for smaller groups that can fit there - and henceforth is used often.

The dark ride idea has been a dream of mine as well since about the day they purchased Knott's and got the rights to Peanuts. A Peanuts dark ride is sooooo a dream of mine for the park. (not holding my breath at all though)

And to geneticfreak - the land they may purchase will certainly go for extra parking, and considering how detached from the park it is there will be no park expansion there. At all.

Lastly, I get really confused re: why everyone is so stuck on expanding the park into new lots and dry lakebeds when there is an entire area that has been largely emptied and is just sitting there. This is the land behind laser, and excluding Laser Groves there are a few kiddie rides and a lot of open space. Anyone walk back there in the past couple seasons and see what I mean?

Mike

I should have been more clear about the land for sale. I know that spot of land won't be used for park land, but rather for parking. The open space behind Laser is where there were three large kiddie playhouses that, except for one, have been removed. The open area provides access to the new overflow parking lot that is in an absolutely horrible position between the Laser midway and Steel Force. All that space could be used for park expansions if the new land would be used to replace the lost parking capacity.

Sorry, once again I'm wrong, but all well. I really must be lucky when I go to the park and there is nobody there (at the groves). But, there was, however, about three out of the seven times I went that there was a LOT of buses from NJ and NY. The line for Talon was almost 45 minutes most of the day. And I even actually saw Steel Force running three trains.

Just a little update today. Dorney's website has updated the picture of Patriot's Plunge and Wildwater Rapids.

It's awesome, check it out. http://www.dorneypark.com/rides/wwkingdom/plunge.cfm

Another update today. Pieces for the new slildes have begun to arrive at the park. Check out http://www.licensetothrill.net and follow the link.
Just goto ckcoasters.com That's the site with the pictures. Also, there is a Master Blaster in Maryland at the Splash Mountain Waterpark and one being built (not sure if it's open) at the H2Oasis waterpark in Alaska.
There is also a Master Blaster that opened late this past summer in Delaware. Sorry, I don't have the name of the park handy, but it's somewhere in my stacks of material... If I find it I'll pass it along.

I just looked on CF's website. It said DP will be receiving 6 million. Does anyone still think there is a chance for a flat?
Not really, with the 10 new slides, the re-worked wave pool and various other improvements being made in both parks, I think they will have used up their money. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, the H2Oasis indoor water park had it's first swimmers back in November, but that was only for shareholders, investors, and guest to come take a splash in the new oasis. The big opening is expected to be later this month.

Interesting statements made on this water park though:

Yo must be over 16 years old to use either the hot tubs or the spa

They claim to have the First Master BlasterĀ® in North America

Lake Compounce-So Fresh and So Clean Clean

The 16 year old age req. is VERY common, but if you're with an Adult, its usually waived.

And its not the 1st master blaster. I think the 3rd or 4th or something.

Spedy, I think that's what Vertigo was hinting at with the word "claim"...his sarcasm filter is set to *on*...;)

Just want to let everybody know that vertical construction has begun on the slides about 2 days ago. Hopefully we will see some good photos and updates posted on websites soon.

Also, does anybody know the current status of the 6 acres next to Dorney? Did they actually buy it? I haven't heard anything in a while.

Hm...thanks for the tip off. I'll stop by the park tomorrow and post some pics up on the site for monday.
On Wednesday I received the Dorney newsletter and it gave some nice updates about the park for 2003.

1) Dorney's record 2002 season - Dorney Park entertained 1.6 million people in 2002 making it the 40th most visited amusement park. This is up from #43 in 2001 and up from #46 in 2000. Sort of a tidbit: Since 1992, Cedar Fair has invested OVER 80 MILLION DOLLARS in Dorney Park.

2) New for 2003- In addition to the ten new slides(which together makes up to 2500 feet), redone wavepool, and more midway renovations, there will be a PEANUTS show at the Hercules Plaza Theatre. Beagle Bucks is also new for 2003. They can be used for admission, games, merchandise, and food. Do any other CF parks have Beagle Bucks? They also said to look out for some exciting new changes to Halloweekends!

One thing that I love about Dorney Park is how they tell useful information and information only enthusiasts like us would want to know!!

Enjoy the rest of your day at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom.
