Dorney in 2003

Indeed, Indeed! The BODY Slides are being removed - thanks for noticing!

I must have taken an extra dose of crazy this morning.

Mike

I still don't know where they are going to build Jumpin' Jack Splash. According to Dorney's website, it is going to be built between the Torpedo Tubes and the wave pool.

But looking at the park map, it doesn't look like there is any room there.

J2S, how can you enjoy the Krazy Kars that much? I would rather have Dodgems over them anyday. (Not the one direction Dodgems, I think Cedar Point has the ones I'm talking about.)

Forget the Krazy Kars or some lousy Dodgems, bring back the Lusse Skooters! They did have some in the old Thunderhawk station, what ever happened to them?

I think Dorney should get the B/M Flyer is 2004 so that all the bugs are worked out by then, and I can finally get one in Sandusky. Yes, that's what should happen :)

Jumpin' Jack Splash, as far as I can figure, will be where it's described by the park. The park map doesn't show room, but if you look at a photo of the park on mapquest or something similar, there actually is a small hill with a few trees next to the wavepoll that is perfect for a slide.

Mike

So in other words, the little bit of trees in the park left will be taken out. Of course, only Dorney would take out the little bit of scenery left.

Since the body slides are being removed right now and they aren't in the way for Patriot's Plunge, do you think they are getting replaced just like the Speed Slides were?

I doubt they would get a flyer when SFGAdv has one only and hour or so away. I would rather them get something Intamin... impulse or rocket.

As for the map, don't ever rely on it too much... it isn't particularly accurate.

I agree. It will be a few years before they get a flyer now. Although, if and when it does happen, it won't be slapped in a parking lot. I think with next year being a major aniversary year, they will want to do somthing that wows people, and as much as I would like an impulse, a rocket coaster might be more impressive just because there aren't as many out there.

Yeah I totally agree, J2S. My comment was an inside joke for those who know me...I want the B/M Flyer at Cedar Point really, really bad.

As far as Dorney, I'd have to say an Impulse or Rocket, but I have never been there, so I'm not totally sure on the layout, or quality of rides. I have been told, by one RaptorJo, however, that Talon kicks major butt...

MHammer, I just looked at an aerial photo of Dorney Park on mapquest, is the land directly to the left of the overlflow lot the 6 acres Dorney could buy?

Also, does Dorney own all the land that is behind Lazer? The land goes all the way back to two roads that kind of look like a boundary line. It's huge! I hope Dorney owns that. But, it looks like there are some houses(buildings) here and there. I've always noticed when I go on the Zephyr you can see some old farm houses. Are those houses on DP's property?

That hill has like 4 ugly pine trees on it. Hardly beautiful, shade producing scenery. And, your statement would have been valid 5 years ago but each year for a while now they have constantly added more, and more, and more trees all over. It's a fact, and making it sound like they keep removing trees when they're actually adding many is rather ignorant.

Also worth a note - a large part of the work going on in WWK was mentioned as the revamping of all the landscaping. (I.E. more trees, grass, less concrete) If you had done your homework you'd have known this and not made such an uninformed comment.

BS13 also mumbled: "Since the body slides are being removed right now and they aren't in the way for Patriot's Plunge, do you think they are getting replaced just like the Speed Slides were?"

No, they are in the way, and they're not coming back. Period.

And yes, the land directly to the left of the overflow lot is what they might be able to purchase. And they do own a bit of the land behind laser, but not all of it by any means. I wouldn't look for expansion back there though.

Mike

I know Dorney has been adding trees each year. I was joking because everytime I read a post about Dorney people are always complaining. They are always saying there is never enough shade. I noticed especially this year how nicely the trees and scenery have grown. I also like the scenery where the control booth for the Laser Lights show used to be. Sorry I made myself sound ignorant.

But I was wrong about the Body Slides. I thought they were across from future site of PP, not in the way. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

In addition to the former location of the laser show control booth, another nicely shaded spot that is great for chillin' is along the pathway that runs through the Thunderhawk.

Once trees are planted, it takes time for them to mature, which they are doing nicely. I keep saying wait until the trees and bushes surrounding the Talon grow. The park has a cleaner look now than it did say even five years ago.

Update2:

As per an article in the paper this morning, the site for the Vietnam memorial has been changed, and the 6.8 acres next to DP's overflow lot is now for sale.

It's mentioned that Dorney's atty. has already approached the county about the land. Also is mentioned that many potential purchasers are expected, and that the land may be great for another hotel.

We all know that Cedar Fair is very open to adding hotels at it's properties if it looks like it'd work, I'd love it if they found a way to balance their parking needs with a hotel. Granted, that's way down the line if at all, ever.

Mike

An update on the Body Slides. I was driving down 222 yesterday and WWK's old body slides have shown up in the parking lot at Terry Hill Waterpark which is about 15 minutes away from Dorney. I saw the slides and I'm pretty sure they're the ones from Dorney. I didn't see any supports though, just the slides themselves.

That's very interesting info about the land for sale. I have a feeling that the next few years will bring several hotels to the area, but not just for Dorney. About 15 minutes down I-78 to the west, Cabela's is preparing to build a monster store. I believe they are estimating drawing around 2 million tourists per year, which can only mean good things for the tourism industry in the greater Allentown area.

Do you think it's really possible for Dorney to build a hotel? How much do you think that would cost?
That'd be interesting to see if they are going to push for that sort of market in the future. Right now, I would assume it is a very one day trip kind of market out there, with the vast majority being locals trying to cool off in the waterpark. With the right demand though even outside of Dorney maybe it could be a good move.

As for hotel costs, how much did the Breakers Express cost? A low-budget efficiency sort of thing probably wouldn't break the bank.

And as we've seen, it can be highly profitable.

Wish I could visit SFMM and Knott's...maybe in some other lifetime of mine

Well...

The majority, by far, yes are day trip visitors. There are, however, in July and especially August a large number of families that come from NY & NJ to vacation at the park. And the 4 hotels right by Dorney book pretty solid during the summer, and have no problem in the off-season.

The market is certainly there right now, we'll see what happens in the next few years I suppose.

Mike

Someone needs to build a Master Blaster waterslide in the midatlantic area. I'm sure they're expensive, but after riding Dragon Blaster, and Master Blaster at Schlitterbahn, a regular old waterslide just doesn't seem the same.

I'm not sure why Dorney would ever need to build a hotel. There's hotel(s?) across the street, and one about a mile away that has discount coupons (I believe it's a Day's Inn).
