Cedar Point, Holiday World again dominate Golden Ticket Awards

Posted | Contributed by Raven Maven

Amusement Today released the results for this year's Golden Ticket Awards from Paramount's Kings Island today. Cedar Point and Holiday World again scored big in several categories.

Cedar Point picked up Tickets for Best Park, Best Capacity, Best Games Area, a second place for Best Souveniers, Best Steel Coaster for Millennium Force, 3rd best steel for Magnum and 12th best steel for Raptor.

Holiday World again got the nod for The Raven as the world's best wood coaster, with The Legend nailing the 4th place position. The park also Tickets for the Friendliest Staff and Cleanest Park.

In the best steel coaster category, the new winners included Six Flags Great Adventure's Nitro in 4th place, Kennywood's Phantom's Revenge in 7th, Holiday Park's Expedition GeForce (Germany) in 8th, Six Flags Magic Mountain's X scored 20th and Six Flags Over Texas' Titan in 23rd.

The wood coaster list shuffled around a bit, but went largely unchanged with the only new entries being Heide Park's Colossos (Germany) at 16h and Indiana Beach's Cornball Express at 18th.

First Gasp: The Raptor is out of the top ten and Dueling Dragons is ahead!

Second Gasp: The Beast actually rose!

CsTrFrk The Camry is the best selling car in america does that make it the best car, so no WDW is not better than CP. 2 coasters at one(I Think) 15 at the other. And its best AMUSEMENT park not THEME park

I just realized that California Screamin did not make the top 25. That ride is a top 25 in every way. I think there are a lot of California coaster fans that feel this way about this...

I also agree with those that say X is rated too low. I suppouse the downtime was a significant factor in that. Other than the capacity and downtime problems, this is the best coaster I have been on, including Mil Force (which is good, but not as perfect as some would believe) and Magnum.

HP Wildcat IS amazing. Try riding it in the last seat at night. The airtime on those twisting hills is fantastic. I'll grant you it's not as smooth as Cornball or Viper, but it's really not that rough. Ghostrider in the back seat seemed about the same to me.
I can't believe Twister is so far behind Phoenix. I prefer Twister myself.

Just 15 miles from 2 CCI's.
Approx. 200 coasters ridden -- #1 Shivering Timbers

Where is Goliath SFH? What about Expedition Ge-Force? How are they not on the list, while Incredible Hulk and Raging Bull are? Phantom's Revenge should be closer to the top. Seems to me like Europe is getting the shaft.

What are you talking about? Expedition Ge-Force is in the top 10! And who says that the Europe coasters all get the shaft...I see several in the top 25.

-----------------
LocoBazooka--Sevendust, Nonpoint, Stereo Vent, Mushroomhead
Korn Tour (With no name)--Korn, Puddle of Mudd, Deadsy

Where is TALON!?!?! Why was it not in the top 25?! It is such a great ride!

TALON rocks! Peace out!

I feel confident Kennywood's Phantom Revenge will raise after seventh place next year!

Kennywood is just a neighborhood from my home.

Only 1 Millie train can be on the circut at once!

So you want trim/block brakes added to its course? And you wouldn't complain about that then?

Anyone notice the HUGE gap between 3rd and 4th place?? Also, some people need to look at the list before posting WHY IS COASTER XXXX NOT ON THE LIST.
Finally SFGadv is getting some notice for Nitro. It is definately world class. I only wish more people would start noticing what is truly one of the best collections of steel in one park.(No I don't mean CP)

The countdown has begun to Gaydays 2003 at Disney and Universal. *** This post was edited by coasterrod on 8/27/2002. ***

I still think S:ROS is way better than MF. But, I'm still glad to see it rank number 2. If it were up to me, It'd be

1)S:ROS (SFNE - haven't ridden the others)
2)Nitro
3)MF

But, I guess i'm just a big fan of airtime, and it did take a lot of ingenuity for CP/Intamin to bring a coaster that high.

I really think S:ROS's number 2 spot is only due to it's somewhat remote location for most enthusiasts. Anyone else agree with me? Disagree?

Anyways, kudos to the winners. This is still one of the most accurate lists I've ever seen.

Why did MF get #1!?!?!? Its a one trick pony, you would think that after 2 years the voters would grow sick of this thing. I'm surprised Expedition GeForce ranked so high. I don't get how legoland & Idlewild beat out IOA & SFWoA. BGW in best food is weird. I actually hated their food. What exactly is games area? Midway games or an arcade? How did Racer sneak into best station? Have n o idea how CP got best capacity and friendliest park. I disagree with a lot of the votes, but that's what the people voted...

Thanks for the S:ROS info, everyone.

i agree, some rides are overrated. Magnum, MForce, SForce and S:ROS
I do get the feeling that a European ride is thrown in every so often so it looks mor representative of the world. Really this is just a poll of American rides and the European ones taken out. It is a joke to call the winner the "Worlds Best" when over half the voters are American. Any catorgaries won by non-American things?

Jim, my only guess for why Lightning Racer isnt listed under "original" coaster station is because Wildcat looks just like it :) Or course, I'd have had both of those at second and third (With Dueling Dragons far and ahead @ #1).

But what I *dont* understand is how people voted Cedar Point's staff as being more friendly than the Disney parks. That screams BLASHPHEMY to me! Well at least they got the number #1 right in that catagory...

No coaster list can be completeley fair, as everyone has bias.

The absence of Steel Dragon just shows how unfair the list actually is.

Forgive me if I don't put as much stock in the awards, as nice as they are. But it's really obvious that there are a lot of things overlooked and skewed on it. As a few examples:

Magnum #5? Have any of these people riden anything in the last several years? Magnum is a good coaster, not great, but good. And it's certainly no #5.

Best Themed or Background Music: DCA at #2? Forgive me but why is it even on the list. After a couple of visits I can tell you that except for 50's and 60's surf music at Paradise pier, DCA far lags behind its sister accross the plaza (which wasn't even in the top 3 for some wierd reason)

Friendliest Park staff- yes Holiday World deserves this award. No arguments there. But again, no Disneyland? Except for HW they blew out every other park I visited in the last 2 years, no contest.

And the only possible reason I can come up with for X being so low is it's downtime. The capacity issue also makes me wonder a bit. As good as CP is, There are definately other parks that hold their own against them that weren't even ranked.

It just really makes me wonder a little bit about the impartiality and knowledge of the people who do the voting.

Yea, you are correct - Magnum is not #5. It is #3! And Magnum hasn't changed much over the past several years! Your perception of it has changed because you're riding the new Intamin and B&M rides. As good as those rides are, I still can honestly say I enjoy riding Magnum more. It has a personality and a much less controled feeling. I'd go as far as saying that MF might be my third favorite ride at CP behind both Magnum and Raptor. Heck, I enjoy a good race on Gemini about as much as any coaster I've ever been on! :)

Well, Matt, seeing as though old Georgie just tok his first Maggie ride *this* year, I doubt "his" perceptions have changed ;)

And I'd totally agree with you in saying that Maggie hasnt changed, but the landscape in which she competes certainly has. While "back in da day" she was the undisputed queen, like Vanessa Williams, her days of "Miss America" are over. Does that (alone) make it a bad ride? NOT AT ALL. But I too am suprised with all the myriad of coasters that are "better" than Maggie, she held on to #3. I mean, I am fully capable of saying that Steel Force is "better" than Magnum, but I dont like SF *nearly* as much.

Whatever yo! These awards are all based on the opinions of people I dont know or care about anyway. They are not likely to change on influence *my* amusement park choices. But you just *gotta* wonder about any park award system that has a "Best Food" catagory that does NOT include Epcot! ;)
