Cedar Point, Holiday World again dominate Golden Ticket Awards

Posted | Contributed by Raven Maven

Amusement Today released the results for this year's Golden Ticket Awards from Paramount's Kings Island today. Cedar Point and Holiday World again scored big in several categories.

Cedar Point picked up Tickets for Best Park, Best Capacity, Best Games Area, a second place for Best Souveniers, Best Steel Coaster for Millennium Force, 3rd best steel for Magnum and 12th best steel for Raptor.

Holiday World again got the nod for The Raven as the world's best wood coaster, with The Legend nailing the 4th place position. The park also Tickets for the Friendliest Staff and Cleanest Park.

In the best steel coaster category, the new winners included Six Flags Great Adventure's Nitro in 4th place, Kennywood's Phantom's Revenge in 7th, Holiday Park's Expedition GeForce (Germany) in 8th, Six Flags Magic Mountain's X scored 20th and Six Flags Over Texas' Titan in 23rd.

The wood coaster list shuffled around a bit, but went largely unchanged with the only new entries being Heide Park's Colossos (Germany) at 16h and Indiana Beach's Cornball Express at 18th.

My comments-

1. Millenium Force- Deserving.

3. Magnum- I love this ride, but I think it's time it moves out of the top 5.

5. Apollo's Chariot- I found this to be a bit over-rated. I'd say somewhere around #8 would suit this ride better.

7. Phantom's Revenge- Sounds about right here...

11. Dueling Dragons- Overrated in my opinion, #15 or so sounds better to me.

12. Raptor- Again, I think this should be ranked better than Dueling Dragons, around #9 sounds okay to me.

13. Alpengeist- In the same leauge as Raptor, should have been ranked around #10

17. Incrediable Hulk- Wow, #17? I'd say at least down around 12 or 13!

Those are only my opinions, of some coasters...

-----------------

Props should goto mindbender, the only steel before 1988 to make the list.
Mindbender. Wow. That's awesome that something that "old" is on the steel list. I'm glad that Beast moved up so far in the rankings. It truly is a top ten woodie. I'm surprised that X made it so high. I didn't think it would be on the list since it had so much downtime. We'll have to see where it ranks next year when it's running fulltime (I hope).

I was asked to describe X in one word. The word? -- OhmygoshwhathaveIgottenmyselfintothisisthescariest
thingintheworldhelpmeIamgoingtodieAHHHH!!!

Overrated rides: steel force, magnum AC, Raptor

Underrated: Alpie, raging bull, X

I just don't, for the life of me, understand why Nitro was 4th. Oh well, Magnum's still rated better. I would have liked the Thunderbolt to have been a little higher, but oh well, the rankings were pretty good and fair.

Mark W. Baruth, This is considered by most the only real rateings in the industry. Sure, a lot of websites and other publications annually rate rides, but Amusement Todays is like the Grammy's.

It is wierd to see X so low but maybe it was because of the downtime.

super7, You don't even want to know what awards I would have for you. Now, did anyone see any awards for Hershey? Anyone? Didn't think so. Well, you'll be happy to know Kings Island won Best Kids Area and second for Best Games Area, not to mention #7 woodie, The Beast (and yes, I saw the two HP coasters further down that list). I don't agree with a lot of the park awards anyways, so what do I know? But "facts" are facts. BTW, with Paramount, I agree with their "out with the crap" attitude and completely disagree with your pessimistic views.

I was glad to see some of my personal favorites high on the lists especially Disneyland, BGW, SDC, and even DCA(woo hoo!)!

At least from my rides this year, I can't believe The Villain and Georgia Cyclone are anywhere near these lists. Of course, I also think SOB should have stomped into the top 5 easily!

Huge thumbs up for Holiday World as well and they deserve all of them without a doubt!

Those two Hershey park coasters should've placed a lot higher than the bottom of the top 20!

LR and wildcat are great coasters in my opinion. *** This post was edited by darienlakefan on 8/26/2002. ***

Darienlakefan, how is number 11 for Lighting Racer considered the bottom of the top 20?

Are you kidding. Why do you cedar point fanboys all think Magnum is soo great. It isnt even in my top 15. And yes, Nitro is in my top 10

Have you even ridden Nitro? *** This post was edited by B&M ROCKS on 8/26/2002. ***

I know this is off topic, but in the waterpark department, I think that Noah's Ark in the Wisconsin Dells should have gotten a mention. It IS America's largest waterpark. There are about 30 or so major slides. It is about the size of a normal theme park. The only things its lacking is a tremendous amount of theming.
At least viper at SFGAm got in there. It deserved to be at least top 25 in my opinion.
Go Timbers...kicking butt and taking names :)!

Congrats to HW! Definitately the cleanest and friendliest park by far! Congrats to Knoebels also! Thier Haunted House lives up to the hype.
MF.......#1 I agree, but what about Xcelerator? I assume it's opening was too late to qualify for the ratings?

I would rate Legend way over Raven anytime (especially since the new PTC's.......) I would also have rated Lightning Racer closer to the top and included the Screechin Eagle up there, but that is just me.....:-)

What about Flight of Fear????? My God it should have been ranked WAY up there! :-)

I have not experienced Shivering Timbers yet (I know, I know....)

Don't get me wrong, I like Raven, but there are sooooo many woodies that I like better.
Doesn't matter.......Holiday World deserves every bit of credit. Kudos to Paula, Will, and the staff!

I'm so glad Villain didn't see a spot on that list. Good lord was that ride a complete POS. And I thought CCI couldn't go bad with a ride...
Ummm... villian is on the list. It is 19th.
Well Phantomlost, if you have ever ridden these gems you would not ask that question.(Not trying to sound rude or anything).

I think they should be top 10 material.

Darienlakefan,

I was just asking how you consider number 11 to be the bottom of the top 20 ;).

Lighting Racer and Wildcat are both amazing rides.

-----------------

Wildact isnt that amazing. It is actually pretty rough. By the way, where was roar on that list. Did I miss it?
