BREAKING! The Bat Flies Again at Kings Island! IT IS A WING COASTER!

rollergator's avatar

How about they recycle all the old signage and theming from Son of Beast, and just block out the 'E' and the 'S' from Beast....

Son of Bat....

No?

Some more detailed queue line and station plans were leaked on KI Central... Clearly an invert. No question.

At first I read this as "Son of Beat." Which would be some kind of awesome club music-themed ride. The ride falls and rises with the beat.

So you’re saying that the reason this was the most horrible PR move ever was because “The Bat” decoy didn’t make sense with the Banshee comb sent to press? In other words, you called out my earlier post that said this was hilarious, complimenting Don Helbig’s generation of buzz…with “Ha! Oh you’re serious?” because you thought it was a flawed, unbelievable decoy?

I thought you were saying this was the worst PR move ever because it was a waste of effort / time / money, which is what you basically ended up saying (and the reason I responded in the first place).

No. That's not even remotely close to what I said. In fact, it's both hilariously and frightening incorrect. You're not following me at all. Which seems to be quite common.

Let's go back to the post you quoted out of context and then misconstrued.

Here it is:

Makes more sense that the web pages are the decoy...especially after so much got rooted out.

Why would you bother making the official send out the decoy? If that's the case, it may be the most horrible PR move ever.

At the very least, it does have the nerd community talking/guessing...but hell, we're easy.

It's the 16th post in this thread. It's three sentences long and it was made within 40 minute of the 'discovery' of the Bat page. (still well within the "WTF" phase of the discussion)

Let's break down those three sentences:

1. I state that it makes more sense that the webpage is the decoy than the materials sent to media outlets (the comb and hair). I figure they'd do that on the idea that so much was figured out early.

2. I explain (apparently poorly) that if the decoy were the comb/hair and the Bat webpage was actually real, that sending those materials out to official media outlets would be the worst PR move ever. Why would you mislead every media outlet with a novelty item that has nothing to do with the actual ride?

3. I concede that at least it has us talking. But follow up with the idea that I'm not really impressed because we're pretty easy like that.

Seriously, what is confusing about that post? I'm calling it early at that point. The website is probably the decoy because if the official send out to the media outlets were the decoy it'd probably be the worst PR move ever.

With me now?

We’re going to disagree there, and according to you, that makes me a moron (as well as the executives at Cedar Fair and almost all other modern businesses).

I love a good debate, but I have a hard time finding one with you. You're too intent on putting words in my mouth and connecting dots as you see fit. I've tried a few times, but it just gets to a point where it's not worth the effort and my replies are simply trying to clarify the ways you've misquoted me, insinuated meaning in my posts and twisted my words.

If you (or anyone, really) can find the place where I said the executives of all modern businesses are morons, I'll be glad to continue. Until then, I'd really prefer you don't paint, flavor or kind of just flat out change my comments in order to build a reply. It's boring for me and, for others who may skim, there's a chance your "interpretations' could be seen as something I might have said.

^Aha! But you fail to mention the twitter post from the (apparently sentient) park's twitter account, where the park plans to "wing it" at the press conference!

Actually, that tweet plays right into my whole take on this thing. It reads:

"Not sure if I will write down some notes or wing it Thursday night when we announce our new world record-breaking attraction."

Wing it is not in quotes or emphasized. There's no wink-wink, nudge-nudge. If you're the average KI follower on Twitter it's an off the cuff comment from the PR dept. It's meaningless. An afterthought.

If you're a coaster nerd, your panties got wet, you giggled like a schoolgirl, you read between the lines (probably convinced that Don was talking directly to you) and you ran to your favorite forum to pontificate about your awesome discovery.

Either way, nothing was gained by the park.

Plus, we all know the biggest threat is that the press release becomes inverted in the wind and causes someone to scream like a Banshee during the annoucement.

Found it. ;)

God, I should be working PR for Kings Island.

Or is it? I don't really care either way; I've never been to KI and have no plans to visit for at least 8 or 10 years.

But that wing comment could be the revealing factor....

I've seen you make some pretty dry comments. I'm not sure if you're playing with me here or not. I'm hoping you are, but worried that you're not.

Just in case you're not...

I'm not talking about the truth or validity of the comments. (is it a wing coaster or not)

I'm talking about the purpose or reasoning behind making such comments. (why bother, nothing is gained - the people who 'get it' are already talking, those that don't get nothing)

bjames's avatar

Yes, I do aim dry.

However, I do largely agree with you usually, including now. KI's web people are faking it (for some really stupid reason), it's definitely inverted thanks to the already-poured footers and plans, and I honestly missed your last comment: "T

And this has happened before, Jeff, when I tried to use quotes without quoting someone forum-style. The rest of my sentence gets deleted! What is up with that?

It's an issue with copy-and-paste.

I accept the explanation of "I'm aware of it, it just doesn't effect enough people to spend worrying a lot of time about it at the moment." -Jeff.

And I had to retype that quote because it doesn't effect a lot of people.

Gonch, what you’re saying about me is exactly how I feel about you. You often misinterpret my posts and quote me out of context. You’ll take something I’m saying that’s a joke or innocent question and turn it into a hostile argument.

Here was my first post in this thread:

Jeph said:Oh come on...do you really think they'd make this same mistake again? Great job KI PR (Don Helbig)...keep people guessing in this new Internet era where just about all announcements are spoiled. Hilarious.

Your response to me:

Great job KI PR...

Ha!

Oh. You're serious?

I took that to mean you disagreed with me. In other words, you thought KI PR was doing a terrible job with this big guessing PR stunt. I didn’t understand your perspective there, so I tried to figure it out, using your other posts in the thread. I then quickly found a post where you said this may be the most terrible PR move ever, and I thought that was the (out of context) reason for your “Ha!” response. According to your rude explanation now, that wasn’t the reason for your “Ha!” response, but you still haven’t explained it. I like when everything makes sense to me, and that’s all I was asking for.

As for your second blurb, I do take in all of your posts and compile what I think you’re saying. I’m not intentionally putting words in your mouth, but I am possibly misinterpreting your logic. I can’t tell you the number of times you’ve done the exact same thing to me, and I’ve just given up replying back. Our debates had deviated so much from the original line of thought that they just became endless and tiresome.

Here was my compilation of your thoughts:

Lord Gonchar said: We don't matter and the general inflated sense of self-importance as to our place in the machine is one of the big turnoffs I have with the community….Playing to us makes NO sense. It's lazy and it's an old way of thinking...when word of mouth mattered.

If my PR guy is playing silly games with fake clues and aiming it specifically to a niche market like the enthusiast community - his or her ass is fired. I can't think of a worse waste of time and effort.

If you think you drive business to the park or affect the bottom line in any meaningful manner or quantity by being a coaster enthusiast then - for lack of a better term - you're a moron.

In compiling your thoughts here, I stated that I, Cedar Fair, and other businesses are morons then, because we all feel that enthusiasts are driving business to parks via social media and other means.

I'd take it a step further and ask why some parks go out of their way to keep these new additions a secret anymore? With the age of social media, the parks don't have the luxury to dictate what gets put in front of us, the average user does. So instead of KI "leaking" the blueprints that were probably public information anyways, someone else went ahead and did it.

There used to be so much control of information but with Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, you can put whatever the heck you want out there. And furthermore it was social media that caused "Kings Island 2014 Coaster" to be in the top 10 trending searches, not from the PR department.

I don't envy their jobs. I don't think its a horrible PR move anymore than I think it's a great PR experiment. I think down the road if the park wants to keep it a surprise there is going to have to be more misdirection and I think that's where the "decoy" site comes into play. The more information, the more misdirection, the greater the element of surprise. And the more misdirection out there, the less I pay attention. I am the 1%...

Exactly.

Just because two people are great musicians doesn't mean you can put them in a room and they'll create great music together.

We seem to have that same lack of chemistry. We just don't think the same or play off of each other very well. We can't get a good conversation/debate out of each other.

What if its a floorless which the state of ohio doesn't have? :)

If they just told us what the plans were, that would take away alot of our fun....If the first clue is "We are building an invert, here's the layout, It will be ready 3 years from now"...the major buzz would be over in two weeks. As much as i'd like to know what it is, some mystery is a good thing. Keep folks guessing and interested. Same thing that makes christmas so fun for kids (and adults)
