I'm not going to talk if you guys aren't reading. But the next time you go and buy your Old Navy and Gap clothes from the worlds largest clothing chain, be sure to ask who's making them for. I mean just two months ago we found over 1,000 women hand chained to sewing machines in Arizona. I'm not coming here to start a topic about slavery issues of today, so just go read about it. For now, get back to Scooby and PKI.....
Okay, Vertigo... I'll put my claws away on this one. Won't comment on something I know nothing about.
However, as unpopular as it will sound here, I do agree with the remainder of your earlier post. "Also tell me what 13 year olds have a real job? What 14-16 year olds are saving up $100+ for theme parks and holding on to it until the summer. Rarely do the teens put in tons of effort to work hard for their money and spend it on a ticket to Kings Island. Now a day it's just " Like Daddy, can I have, like, five hundred dollars?" I would assume some do... However, most don't. The malls and stores get all of their money first... or so it would seem from this somwhat jaded observer. The instant gratification of today's culture wins out over saving for the long term (in this case saving for a trip later in the year).
As for the "like five hundred dollar" comment. Again, agreed. I know of at least 3 "teens / early 20 somethings" who have wrecked their cars... and their parents go out and buy them new ones... and I mean NEW ones... not used ones (as us old timers call "pre owned" cars).
Then... "Ask any Cedar Point fan and they'll tell you that Cedar Point isn't all coasters. Sure, it's a big chunk of it, but there's a lot more to it." Exactly... and so are most parks.

Whatever, its people like you that make me wonder sometimes why I go to work every day. Until your generation retires, you're going to do everything in your power to keep the "punk kids" out of the jobs we just might actually deserve because you're pissed that a few of us are spoiled by the ones in your generation that hit it big.
Sorry about the total deviation from topic folks. I'll back off now.

As for those "old timers" complaining about "spoiled" teens, I will simply recall a snippet from the GREAT movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory"
"WHO DO YOU BLAME WHEN YOUR KID IS A BRAT
PAMPERED AND SPOILED LIKE A SIAMESE CAT
BLAMING THE KIDS IS A LIE AND A SHAME
YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHO'S TO BLAME
THE MOTHER AND THE FATHER "

Jeremy - too funny! Anyone who quotes Willy Wonka is A-OK by me [as if you really care if I think you're A-OK...lol].
One question, tho: since I obviously will not be fathering children, do I have the right to complain about "spoiled teens" ???

Now mind you, this comes from the perspective of a former "spoiled" teen. I didnt work for anyone besides my parents before college (the occasional show shovelling gig aside). But I do not think it fair to say that just because I did NOT have a job and got money from my parents to go to Six Flags that that ALONE makes them spoiled. I had to work DAMN hard, juggling sports, excellent grades, music, arts, and household duties. It was my parent's responsibility to make sure that I had access to some modicum of fun. Now if my grades slipped or I lagged doing chores, the faucet was capped "with the swiftness" and that's how it should be.
It's not hard to learn the "value of a dollar" not having a job outside of the home, but ultimately, it is the PARENTS job to teach it. A child cannot spoil themselves.

--who notes that if his child wantonly wrecked a car, that child would be less likely to find his ass on the seat of a new Jag and more likely to find is as on the "hot coals"!
Again, Jeremy, we are pretty much in agreement. Do I think teens are spoiled? Absolutely. Why? Because they have parents (some of them from my generation, some of them a little bit older) who are / were spoiled! I grew up in the "me me me, gimme gimme gimme" generation. It has not trickeled down. Spoiled kids being raised by spoiled parents!
I was also a spoiled kid... not only that... I was an only child... and an only grand child! Talk about spoiling, I don't know what is.
I won't go into any long winded explanation, just go back and read your last post. Pretty much in complete agreement.

I'm not sure the kids of today have to learn MORE than we did, but they sure learn DIFFERENT.
Back in my day, we didn't have this thing called the internet where you could research your term paper (or buy it for that matter). We had to go to this place called a library and read a book in order to find out information. Crazy you say? No really, we did.
When it came time to type the paper we had, get this, something called a manual typewriter. If you made a mistake, there was no delete or backspace, we had to use something called Whiteout (which was invented by Mickey Dolenz's mother...but you wouldn't know him).
There were only 3 channels on the tv (blaspehmy!). There was no Discovery Channel, Learning Channel, or History Channel by which we could learn everything about Pearl Harbor in 1 hour.
Our math problems couldn't be done on a calculator, hard as that may seem to believe. Excel is somthing you did if you got straight "A's".
I won't even tell you how we had to do dishes. You wouldn't believe me if I did!

We're talking in general. This generation of teens is less than 15% employed. Tell me where the rest of us get the money to buy Ashanti, Eminem, Weezer, Dixie Chicks, and Bad Boy records?
All the bands (If you really can call them "bands") sux major ass! except for Wezzer. I wouldn't waste a dime on those D-Bag "bands." I'll take a heavy metal band over those main stream media whores any day! (I know Wezzer isn't metal)

When is the OFFICIAL MiA announcement? Anyone hear that?
I rember reading a comment by ST Chick that said they were going to announce it at the end of July. They never announced, so it may be coming soon.

Goku2216, no one gives a hootin' any about your musical prefernce. A random arguement about music is not needed. (Especially since the top selling genre of music this summer is gospel, and top selling gospel CD this summer is by Michelle from Destiny's Child. Yeah, we know that makes ears burn red. ;) )
Dang, don't this stuff make my people wanna' jump' jump'! Who brought up being spoiled? The fact that more teens have their parents pay for their tickets instead of paying themselves does not mean that they're directly spoiled. I'll just put in that agre with SFLake's reasoning. Now pass the Courvoisier.

THE MOTHER AND THE FATHER ""Augustus, save some for later...." Veruca Salt, Mike TeeVee, and Violet also had parents that didn't understand that "No" is a word your child WILL learn sooner or later.....so much easier when they learn young....;)....I still remember thinking of Willy Wonka as a role model, oh so MANY years ago...

No it was more of an argument of you making way to broad generalizations about "teens." Not everyone follows the trend of what marketers consider is "hip/cool." This can be said about you Gap/Old Navy comments also. Not everyone who is of a younger age goes to these stores.
I also want to say not every teen is a pampered "cake-eater!" Everyone comes from different walks of life. The whole concept/reality is what makes America=America. Not everyone comes from a family were they flaunt their money and bye their kids Jags and Vets. No I’m not jealous, I am not ashamed of my family or myself. The life that I am living has made me who I am and I wouldn’t change that for the world!
By making these generalizations you are showing that you are out of touch with society and are narrow-minded.

I'll say it again, Dang, don't this stuff make my people wanna' jump' jump'!
Did you get a single part of that? Multiple companys, mainly Gap(Old Navy), Osh Kosh, and Florenzo(owns mainy small clothes lines) have there clothes made by enslaved workers and illegal immigrants who have never had a chance to decide what they want to do with their lives because they're chained to sewing machines. It was nothing about teens all buy their clothes Gap/Old Navy(though it is the world's largest store chain).
Broad generalizations?!! My words came from statistics and the experience from living in Oakland, San Jose, Seattle, Flint, Baton Rouge, and Boston.
Also, heavy metal sales are down 12% this summer , rap is down 24%, pop is down 4%, R&B is down 8%, classical down 2%, and country music is up 16%, and Gospel is up 22% .......have a nice day.

The thing that pisses me off the most is old people that generalize teens when they have no idea what we go through. You may be right about some mainstream teens that dress to impress with trendy clothes and listen to crappy music, but these people I would much rather back hand than associate with. I'm sure you saw a lot of this in large cities, but it's a little different in small towns. Sure there are preppy groups, but not nearly as bad as in big cities. MTV sucks because of all the same lame music being played. Carson Daly is a massive tool.
I was never pampered though life. I don't have cabel or satellite TV. I'm thankful I have the Internet on this 300 MHz POS from 1997. Why not upgrade...let's see I don't have the money, it's a family computer, so I have no room to complain!
I have lived on a farm all my life where I received no money for work. No allowance, and yet my brothers and I are expected to pay for college on our own. My parents make more than enough money to put my brothers and I though college, and they choose not to help out financially at all. Instead they are undoubtably dooming us to a huge debt after we get out of college.
Getting a 4.0 GPA while taking the most advanced classes isn't enough anymore when you attend a smaller school that gives no scholarships for extended education. You have to be the star quarterback or basketball player of the school as well. You have to be a leader outside of school and volunteer for community service. You have to be part of the National Honor Society. Academics no longer get you where they used to 20 years ago. Attending Notre Dame or Purdue would be a huge financial burden if you are accepted and have no way to pay for it. The song "Rockin' the Suburbs" is a great expression of the U.S. today. Basicly, if you're male, middle class, and white you're screwed! $30,000 a year for tuition is ridiculously high for the same education you would get at a community college. The only difference is the name of the school on your degree.
I've had a job for a year now, and it barely makes 50 cents above minimum wage. It sucks because I know it won't put a dent in the huge loans I'll have to take out for tuition to Purdue. Your 15% of employed teens figure is off by at least 10-15%. We had a test question on that last year, and factoring all the older teens...15% is far too low.
It's no wonder why so many teens are stressed out these days. We have to spend so much time pleasing our parents, teachers, coaches, and community leaders that we have no time for ourselves. We are accused of being lazy when we really just want some time to relax. The more we're forced to do, the less time we have for ourselves, or the less sleep we get...Sooner or later something's gotta give.
I understand that you were spoiled as a teen, but that doesn't mean everyone, or even the majority are spoiled. Sure we have more technology and access to thing, but with those priviledges, comes more responsibility...something else we're accused having little of. We are given the ability to drive and have many people's lives in our hands, yet we can't choose who we want in governing offices?
As for musical tastes, look below. Metal is where it's at. Old school Metallica & Megadeth are unmatched by any other music. Long, intricate instrumentals, great lyrics, and awseome fast solos. One of the main reasons why the music sales are down is because there aren't as many bands coming out with new albums.
