A teaser video says the stand-up roller coaster at Cedar Point will be squashed on October 19.
The following is the press release issued by the park:
It’s the “last stand” for one of Cedar Point’s steel scream machines. Earlier today, the park announced that the Mantis roller coaster will soon give its final rides.
Mantis was billed as the tallest, fastest and steepest stand-up roller coaster in the world when it opened on May 11, 1996. Featuring trains that secure guests in a standing position, Mantis provides its passengers with a unique ride experience. Mantis was built by the same legendary manufacturers that brought guests the Raptor and GateKeeper roller coasters – Bolliger and Mabillard (B & M), Monthey, Switzerland. In its 18-year history, Mantis has given more than 22 million thrilling rides.
“It’s time to say goodbye to one of the park’s coasters, and it’s certainly been a different kind of ride for our guests,” said Jason McClure, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “But we’re extremely excited about what the future holds here at the Roller Coaster Capital of the World™.”
Guests still have time to give Mantis a “standing ovation” before it shuts down permanently on Sunday, October 19 at 8 p.m. Additional plans for the 2015 season will be announced at a later date.

I think that was just part 1 of a multi-part announcement. There's gotta be more to it.
One thing is sure, PointBuzz is down for the count.
It isn't quite down, but very slow.
Edit: And now it is down.
Yeah, I just added memory. Should be OK in a moment or two. Can't wait for the bitching and moaning to begin!

Ah, good riddance.
If they convert this to a sit down, the restraints better damn well be like Banshee's (or better). But I don't think this is possible due to center of gravity issues?
I'm hoping they will build a better GCI woodie in its place. CP needs good wooden coasters.
I rode Goliath at Six Flags last Sunday for the first time, and I'm impressed. I couldn't catch my breath until the end, and it was intense. Not something I'd marathon all day on, but it was very good. Rocky Mountain Group has a promising future.

At least we know what Dorney Park is getting in 2016.
I am excited to see what comes of this... I know I won't really miss Mantis in its current form.
I think it's pretty clear that "squashed" means reduced to a sit down. Thought it was kinda funny how the grim reaper was using the handrails to climb the stairs.
Very bad news for me and the 7 other people in the world who love B&M Standups.
The trick was to surrender to the flow.
Seems to me the Grim Reaper is becoming rather a mainstay for CF announcements involving ride removals/replacements. It works.

^B&M is designing a sit-down coaster with thrones?
"Last stand" just SCREAMS....conversion. I wouldn't buy any other theory unless it came directly from CF/CP...

Very good news for me and other people who can't ride standups for medical reasons.

Is having your balls squished a medical reason?

It's worth noting that no B&M has been scrapped yet.
Will this be the first? I'm thinking no...
I develop Superior Solitaire when not riding coasters.
Considering Led Zeppelin is still "touring" after 5 years of sitting idle (RCDB now says removed, but Duane's either not got the details or the permission to divulge them)...
...and the "Last Stand" (Achilles Last Stand?) wordsmithing....
It isn't going anywhere. CP just Can't Quit You Baby....
Thankful it isn't Going To California....and hopefully we'll get Good Times (from) Bad Times.
(This post brought to you by Page, Plant, Jones, and Bonham).
Thank God! I could barely walk after riding that coaster.
Who thinks Skyrider or Mantis is going to Michigan's Adventure?
So, I figured it all out. Mantis and Hydra's trains are being swapped. Both parks get "new" coasters for very little cost.
(/sarcasm)
^ You would get decapitated when you come out of the station if that were the case.
"squashed" is a funny term if they are going floorless.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
And that jojo roll in Mantis' train would be... Oh I don't even want to think about it.
And they shoulda said "squished". Cause that's what we do with bugs over here in Ohiya. Squish 'em.
Mayfly the ride?
Does everyone get to throw Squash's at Mantis? :)
My guess is the ride isn't going anywhere. Might have to redeck the station to put riders at proper ride height for floor-less trains. Think about it, It really don't matter where the seat is as long as its in their Heart-line position and you can get into it. So what if your sitting two feet higher than the normal floor-less?
It would be odd they would do that test coat of paint on it if it was going anywhere.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
I have no idea what to think.
I am hoping for a pretty major overhaul... maybe adding an inversion and deleting the lift hill in favor of a launch. No idea how the physics would work out!
Anything they do will be better than status quo.
I think the layout is actually pretty fantastic. I don't see the point in changing anything other than the trains.
13 Boomerang, 9 SLC, and 8 B-TR clones
I actually was wondering if a conversion would work because of the different centers of gravity...I can't imagine it would be that different. I heard (maybe here) that they started painting it different colors, so a conversion would make sense rather than a full-on tear down.
You all may get to see the head-spinning pea soup vomiting I promised earlier if that damn ride comes to Dorney as I have a feeling it will. I'm always glad to have a new (to the park) ride, so in a sense, it is welcome, but...
Of course, I can't figure out where they'd put it. Dinos? Remove Stinger? I still don't think there would be enough room. And Dorney really needs some good wood rather than an unpopular headbanger to replace an unpopular headbanger. The park is in such a competitive area, and I don't think Mantis will give them that edge in the eastern market. They need a game changer over here!

How much change would be required to the super structure of the station to fit in the floorless hardware?
Nothing to see here. Move along.
I can't imagine the station design is too much effort, seeing as how Sheikra has already gone floorless.
They're renaming Mantis to King James. Then, in a three-park deal, they're sending Gatekeeper and Shoot the Rapids to Valleyfair in exchange for Excalibur, and sending the coaster planned for 2016 to Dorney, which will send Stinger to Valleyfair in a maintenance dump.
In another Cavaliers tie-in, the front of the line passes will now be referred to as Whine or Gold.

Sheikra was built with the future conversion in mind

If you really, really wanted to convert it to sit down and the heart line really was that much of an issue (I'm not sold on either of these), there's no reason you couldn't elevate the seats a foot or two above normal sit down/floorless trains. Sheikra's trains have at least 2 levels of seating.

Regarding the heartline, I think, (but I'm not an engineer) that very little, if any, of the first half would have to be changed. The loops and dive roll are probably fine the way they are. The 2nd half is where all of the snap transitions are.
My prediction is they keep the first half relatively the same, and completely tear out and re-do the 2nd half.
To tear down an entire B+M and rebuild a new coaster by May of 2015 is most likely too much to ask. Yes, even for B+M.
