Big Hype...Bigger letdown

Sorry to start a negative topic, but I was wondering what coaster that you had huge expectations for before riding most let you down? For me it would have to be Thunderbolt at Kennywood. The year I rode it it had been rated the #1 coaster in America on one of those polls, and everything I had read about it said how great it was. Then I went there, and first it was running one train (not that they could help that), so I waited over an hour, and then I rode in the back seat, and well.....it just did nothing for me. It was not a bad coaster, but there were a whole lot of woodies that I enjoyed more (even the Jack Rabbit at Kennywood). So that was a huge letdown for me, because the TB was the main reason I went to Kennywood.

id have to say the great white in wildwood, nj was a big letdown. everyone says how it is a great ride, and even though it had good air, it was too smooth for a woodie and was actually eerily quiet. in steel id have to say alpengeist. i think the first half is good, but after the brakes it just plain stinks. It is too fast to enjoy and its quite a headbang on the corkscrew. they never should have removed that trim at the top of the lift.

Starting this topic seems to me to be just asking for trouble. Good luck!

Actually, I feel that this is a great topic. Since I have been to a limited number of parks and ridden very little coasters, I really haven't had a letdown yet.

I was pretty excited to ride SFNE's SLC Mind Eraser, I love inverted coasters. The layout was cool but the ride was just to rough and it took the fun out of it. Are all slc's really rough?

Spider Worlds of Adventures Serial Thriller USED to not be rough. Now it is. I think its something to do with age.

I would have to say Flight of Fear in PKI. Definitely. I that it was going to be so smooth and i was excited to ride.Next thing i now i come of the ride with a headache and my sister was crying. *** This post was edited by # 1 coaster fan on 2/11/2001. ***

The Beast. I rode it for the first time when I was 6. Everyone including my grandpa said this was the greatest coaster in history. Now I didn't have an enormous track record when I was six, but I thought the ride was very dull. I went back to KI last year to give it another chance. I thought maybe I was just a stupid kid. Well, I was right back then, the same old boring ride. I was let down by its Son too, but I didn't have any expectations for that ride so it doesn't fit this thread.

MF,I really felt that after the first drop it was totally dragged out and boring...

Dirty Vern; If you think that Millennium Force's first drop is boring, than what first drop do you think is good? And how is falling 300 feet straight down boring. My biggest disappointment is Nemesis at Alton Towers. It was voted number 10 by NAPHA and it really seemed boring, there wasn't much of a first drop and you could hardly notice the blood streams.

When I was about 8 years old, my family went to Six Flags: Great Adventure. I remember seeing Batman: The Ride and thinking it looked really awesome! ...but I was about an inch too short to ride. This year, my friend and I went out to Great Adventure (mainly for Medusa) and I got to ride B:TR. I got off thinking, gee, they put more time into the queue than the ride.

I was expecting the Riverside Cyclone to be way better last year after they painted it and added PTC trains. Although the trains were nice, Six Flags decided to install a lot of trims which was not nice.

Goliath definitely let me down after the first two drops.

I was really dissappointed with SOB and sorry to say, Alpengiest did really nothing for me either.

So it has a midcourse lift? Big whoop!

Magnum was a lot rougher than I expected, and Raptor was boring! I may just be used to B:TR at SFStL though.

Magnum was my biggest letdown. Don't know why. I guess it's just so hyped up by damn near everyone that there's no way it could live up to expectations.

Good point, Lynch. "Hype" can kill a coaster for the less-than-objective rider. Each ride must be taken on it's own merit. Case in point: Shivering Timbers. After that Discovery show where the guy calls it "the ride of your life" I've heard numerous people say "it's not that great - it's just a bunch of hills" (duh!) or something similer. No coaster is going to live up to that kind of hype. It is, without a doubt, one of the best coasters out there, but if someone is expecting perfection, they're bound to be let down.

I say ride 'em yourself, and be your own judge.
