Big Hype...Bigger letdown

The folks I travel with and I went to Six Flags St Louis this summer all abuzz about the Boss. We were very disappointed in the ride. Fortunately there were other compensations at the park.

Without a doubt GOLIATH! I was really stoked to ride the second largest coaster in the world, at that point in time. First I was a single rider and I was going to ride in the back seat. Well even though all Six Flags theme parks are to have the same rider access policies they don't SFMM makes you have 2 riders in the last row.

The only part of the ride I really enjoyed was the Helix. Not to impressive of a first drop.

Millenium Force. I was only shocked by how amazing it was instead of being numb with disbelief. *** This post was edited by Justin on 2/12/2001. ***
As I live in coaster deficient Portland,Oregon,I welcome the opportunity to ride ANY coaster. However, after riding Jaguar at KBF,I was disapointed,as I was expecting more.If only I made my trip a year later,I could have ridden Ghostrider .AAAURGH!On a more positive note, when I went to Vancouver,BC to visit the PNE/Playland,I saw a weathered looking wooden coaster with a simple sign that just said 'Coaster'.The coaster did not look that large ,so I was not expecting much. The ride blew me away! The airtime was incedible!I have returned to the PNE twice just to ride the Coaster.Oregon needs more coasters!
All of the coasters I have ridden on Discovery's Top 10 list (Magnum, Raptor, Beast, T-Bolt, Phantom). I went in thinking and expecting that these would be the greatest rides in the world.
Last year I took my first major coaster trip basically designed around riding these coasters and was disappointed. They weren't the worst coasters in the world (except maybe Steel Phantom) but I liked a lot of other coasters more on the trip.

So now I won't let myself get too hyped up about any coaster and try to enjoy them for what they do and not what they don't do.

54 more days!!!!
Definitely Millennium Force, too long of a line for a normal tourist, and completely predictable. Also, I don't think it is fun to ride a coaster at night and be able to see all of the track. Maybe that is why I thought it was predictable.

MAGNUM all the way! Too rough, boring layout, not as much air time as people said it had. And I'll join the MF crowd too, but just because everyone around me and all the hype said it was the best thing since the Crystal Beach Cyclone. Although I think it is a really good coaster, one of the best, it is all air time (GOOD air time and lots of it) with an unexciting track layout and no good elements like a helix. But it was very smooth; hopefully Intamin will get better with time.
i was just wanted to say everyone hypes up the crystal beach cyclone to be the greatest wooden ever. no one has ridden here. it looks like the scariest ride ever built. i mean it had a nurse at the station. that ride probably hurt more than any arrow ever built. it doesnt sound that tempting to me. on another note the biggest let done i have to say was dueling dragons red train. the blue i enjoyed. the red just seemed to be a little rough for a b and m but just didnt live up to what i expected. it definetly needed to be longer. the blue though i loved and i wont complain. i feel the pacing was much better and was a good ride.

I was really hyped up about riding the Texas Giant. I was prepared for the "ride of my life". Instead I got the "most boring ride of my life". I could have jumped out of the train and ran down the first drop and still beat the train.
The most BORING coaster ever made by a coaster company(and my biggest letdown) was Magunm. Man, this ride stunk the whole time. The first drop was okay. The Discovery Channel was making a big fuss about it. The Magum stunk.
I know im gonna take some flack for this, but I didn't think that the villian was all that great.
I was dissappointed with the ride.
How about IOA's Incredible Hulk??? For all it's hype that was given, I was truly let down by it. I really expected something more for a new launch coaster. I really liked the Dueling Dragons though. I guess a park can't put their eggs all in one basket, can they now??
Definitely Magnum. I heard about that coaster from my Brother when it was built in 1989. Hype has been surrounding that ride for me until my first ride in 2000. Definetly NOT the best coaster in the world.

Also Raptor. I remember looking at Montu before a trip to BGT, and hearing how people said Raptor was better.
Raptor is my least favorite Beemer! A big letdown compared to Montu.

My pet peeve: People who post and just write how the thread will be closed. JUST DONT POST
I don't think I've ever been let down by a coaster. Each one -- even the production run models -- have something special to be savored. But you can't buy into the hype for it to work that way! Enjoy the hype for the hype, and the intense logo for the great souvenir T-shirt, and evaluate the ride for itself.

Whatever goes up, must come down, preferably at a speed over 60 mph and leaning into a flying turn
I would have to say Son of Beast. At first when I heard about the 218ft. woody I was so excited. I was thinking how awesome it would be and how much airtime a 200ft woody would have, but it was only a good first drop. The rest of the ride hurt like hell! The lap bars gave me a bruised rib! The first helix was just way to intense! The loop was the smoothest part of the ride! I was very disappointed in King's Island. Another ride would have to be Alpengiest. I saw its facts and height of 190ft., but the drop turn a full 180 degrees. That totally ruined the drop! Then the rest of the ride was way to intense, especially the trim brakes!

#1 letdown of all time: SOB
After a 700-mile trip to CP's Coastermania, then 4 more hours on the road for URC II's ERT, it was DOWN. No topping that for disappointment!

#2 letdown
B:TR, SFGAM. It LOOKED great, theming lent itself to more anticipation, but the ride didn't really blow me away. I was actually more excited to find an operating Rotor (Cajun Cliffhanger) than to have just been on a world-first coaster. Of course, I thought much more of inverts after the 2nd generation (Raptor) came around.

#3 letdown
American Eagle, also SFGAM. Don't get me wrong -- I LOVE SFGAM! But the line always seemed to last an eternity for this ride, and for some very strange reason it remains the only coaster so forgettable that I absolutely can't remember what it was like. That's really weird.

This ride is supposed to be "America's Roller Coaster" or something. I HATED the ride. It was everything but smooth. I almost wanted to get off the ride. That's right, off the ride. It was, by far the biggest disappointment dealing with roller coasters.

Instead of the biggest disappointment, how about the best "This ride is awesome, I never expected it to be this great!!!" ride. I'm of the old school, the one I'm on is the best one at the moment.

From Mean Streak to the Yankee Cannonball, they're all great in their own way. I'd give anything to ride the Lincoln Park COMET one more time.
Magnum would be my biggest disappointment. Everyone said it had great air, it had very little, and it was not very great. It was bumpy, and it was just... average. I'd much rather ride Wild Thing at VF. I might even skip Magnum this year @ CP. I'll probably be disappointed by MF too, since everyone says it is the best coaster on earth and stuff like that. I'll probably like Disaster Transport more.
I know I'm asking for it, but we all have different opinions. I went to Paramount's King's Island, and I was shocked when I decided that I didn't thoroughly enjoy the world renouned Beast. I liked the fact that it was fast and long, but it was just boring. The first drop isn't incredibly steep, and the layout didn't have anything truly exciting in it.
