What parks are affected from the power outages?

I'm sitting in the Hampton Inn just down the road from Waldameer. Everything has been fine here since we arrived around 10pm.

We spent the day at my parent's house - they live about 15 or 20 miles south of I-80 in western PA. No efeects of the outage there, but when we took off we stopped for gas once we reached I-80 and everything was out. We finally found power at the Conneaut Lake exit (147) on I-79.

Not sure if either park lost power but by late evening, they both had it back.

CP was mentioned on the 5am news. They showed footage of Magnum. they said waits were up to 20 mins to be evacuated. They laughed about it and talked about how scary that must of been.

Hi.....whats your name again?

Freedom that time off when the kids go back to school!

Finally got power back at 3:30 this morning, just lisntened to the radio most of last night, played some basketball. I'm just happy I got power, considering I'm an hour north of NYC.

Due to the massive power system failure affecting the north eastern part of the United States today Six Flags Great Adventure briefly lost power around 4:15 this afternoon (August 14th, 2003). According to park spokesperson Kristin Siebeneicher “Six Flags at Great Adventure in Jackson lost power for about 10 minutes, but no one got stuck on a ride.” She added "Everything is back up and running, we ran safety checks on the rides." Siebeneicher said in the case of a power outage, rides finish their cycles, then stop. For example, a spinning ride will continue to spin, but will slowly come to a stop. Cycles can take up to a minute to finish. “Nobody was stuck on a ride. We have the means to take people off in a timely manner." All guests were safely walked down from the disabled rides, and after the power returned and safety checks were completed all rides re-opened.

Haha, its because the park has such horrible capacity that nobody got stuck!

Got our power back at 8 am this morning (Plymouth/canton Michigan). Spent the night in the tent which was cooler (although damper) than the house was. Drank lots of Corona, watched for the Persides meteors, caught a few satellites (amazing what you can see when there are no lights to filter out the stars), and basically hung out.

It was a nice change having the hubby and son hanging out with me instead of their PCs!

I see CP is open today, but wonder about the rides that require lots of electrical power (WT??) We've been asked to refrain from using our air conditioning, and have to conserve (and boil) water.

Investigators are now saying the blackout appeared to have been started by a "9 second 'event'" in northern Ohio. (CNN)

Hmm.

How much power do Wicked Twister and Top Thrill Dragster take on that dedicated power line again? ;-)

I too Im in western lake county...all my friends all around me are still without power. I feel bad they call me and they ask what im doing..."watching tv" they are mad at me!

Hey you jerk! I was sitting here in the dark and you were watching TV?!?! That is so not fair... you only live like 5 miles away from me.

Anyways, if my power was not back on by the time I got up today, I was going to be on my way to CP or SFWoA... I might even go to WoA tonight if I have nothing else to do.

This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time.

I know The Great Escape was affected. I was on the lift of the Comet when it went out and got to walk back down. It would have been more fun had it not been my first almost-ride of the day. The people who got hit the worst were on the Pirate Ship. It was at full height and with no power they had no brakes. They just had to wait for it to naturally stop. Only a few people were sick.

The park was open again this morning but the Comet was having some work done and wouldn't open until 1 so I gave up and drove home.

IM back! Wow we had no power for over 10 hours in the area of NYC I live in. Like someone already said we are so spoiled with the electricity. I called Cedar Point right after I heard the blackout had spread as far as Cleveland Ohio. I asked if the park was affected by the outages, and if they where still open. They where closed down for the day, and they had lost power. I also called Sixflags Great Adventure, and they told me they had been slightly affected, but where still open, and everything was back to normal.

I could imagine that Rye Playland was affected along with Sixflags Darien Lake, maybe even Marine World, and Martins Fantasy Land. Also Astro Land (duh) I have a in law who lives not too far from Kingsburg Amusement park in New Jersey, and they had power. In conclusion its good to see that all the parks dealt very well in this situation as did the areas affect by it.

On thing that raises an eyebrow right now is. My sister wanted to go to Hurricane Harbor N. J today, and when I called all the numbers I know for the Sixflags New Jersey property. The are all dead. IM not chancing it today, maybe next Friday. As for now IM happy to not live like a almish anymore.

...and people wonder why Cedar Point doesn't have an 800 number. It's yahoos like you who call to see if they are open even when you have no intention of going to the park. An 800 number would only encourage more calls of no relevance.

Do you think that answering your question was their number 1 concern yesterday?

This is the first time that I can recall Cedar Point "officially" closing early - does anyone recall any other times?

It surprises me that the Magnum walkdown is getting so much attention nationwide. Maybe despite having 20% of the US population without power, yesterday still qualified as a "slow news day?" :)

jimmybob, who just missed the outage by a few miles, and wonders just what the heck an "almish" is...

In 1997 when I worked at CP, they closed early due to a large amount of rain they got early in the season.

The park has closed early before - as cmuCoasterFan mentioned. I seem to remember the park closing early on a HalloWeekends Friday a couple of years ago. There was heavy rain on a night that usually has very light attendance.

This is the first time, however, that an early closing was the result of a power outage.

PCW lost all power at 4:15. Fortunetly a lot of the rides were loading at the time. There were some evacs, but it was all handled extremely well and there were no major incidents.

OK I bet someone put some extra juice into TTD to get it over the top!!

After the great blackout in 1965, someone reported that it happened the second he turned on his toaster-oven. My Dad, who was an electrician, said it was entirely possible that one event caused the blackout..the toaster oven could have overloaded the circuit it was on...cascading to the next circuit, and so on. So you never know...

You don't know how much the word "suck" comes to mind when this happens to you on your 2nd trip to Cedar Po!nt, and the first one didn't include any rides on Dragster.

For me, it was the same time. I was in the water-park at the time of the outtage, and all of a sudden... the water stopped flowing. I looked over at Magnum, and I saw the train stuck on the lift. I glanced even further off just for the off-chance, and what do you know? Millennium Force was stuck at the near top... almost as high as you can get. I knew instantly it was a power outtage...

...I seriously thought it was only Cedar Po!nt, and put the blame on Wicked Twister for sucking the juice. Pretty soon, it was getting a little annoying because the waterpark remained open with the lazy river slowly slowing down to a crawl. They had to eventually shut it down completely because of a lack of filtration in the H2O.

It was eerie at Cedar Point with no power. Only rides open: Swan paddle boats, Paddlewheel Excursion, & all the classic car rides. Had to try one or two. I was irritated because it was the 2nd day I really had planned out. TTD was running soooo smooth, especially compared to the Wednesday before. I was mad, but I didn't want to blame Cedar Point... but I wanted some kind of compensation... but I know they don't owe me nothing, sorta. So at least they took down all names, addresses, phone numbers, and how many were in your party that day.... which is a nice gesture, but I don't know what's going to happen with that.

I can say that Magnum peeps were stuck in the lift for a good hour or so before being let out. Millennium Force was around 45 minutes (or so it felt) before they cranked them over. Raptor was stuck on the E-Stop, as with Mantis. Not sure about the other bad-boys, though. I think Wicked Twister got stuck at the top spike ;).
