Threadjacking Alert

Yeah, so much of today's music is just cookie-cutter over-marketed drivel. And I'll echo the Faith No More comment, too.

Clear Channel has killed all diversity.

There are plenty of great industrial bands making music today that can rival 242 or TKK. Assemblage 23, Apoptygma Berzerk, Funker Vogt to name a few. The problem is, it's hard to discover these bands. I read about a few of them in AP, downloaded some of their stuff off of Kazaa or WinMX, liked it, so I bought their albums. Unfortunately, if the record companies have their way, I won't be able to do that for much longer, either.

As far as enthusiasts (of which I don't necessarily count myself one) being industrial music fans, I think it may be a CoasterBuzz anomaly. I'm at amusement parks about 300 days out of the year (no, I'm not insane, it's my job) and I see an occasional KMFDM shirt, that's about all.

Then of course, there's enthusiasts in to new wave music... I refer to that as the "John Peck Factor." ;)

300 days a year? What, may I ask, do you do?

As long as you're talkin about it, where did Clear Channel come from? I didn't even notice that they owned like every radio station across the country until a few months ago. They really have killed a lot of good music off. But some good stuff still sneaks through.

To get good music though, you gotta see 'em live first. Anyone can make a studio cut, if you got real talent, you can rock a crowd to no end playing your own music (see: Less Than Jake, Dropkick Murphies, and 75% of all bands ever on Warped Tour, plus good oldies like Chicago, Styx, etc.)

I've also noticed many billboards being owned by them.

If I remember correctly, the vocalist from Linkin Park made a perfect joke on their MTV "Cribs" segment. At the end of the show, as they are shooeing out the cameras, he says, "see you on behind the music" knowing full well that they were already (even though this new record just came out) passe. I applaud that. At least he knows they are a one trick pony (that I admittedly liked a lot more last year, but I tired of them when I heard their 'new' record-sounds like the same session if you ask me).

Still, I like Chesters' voice, and the guitar tones.

Chris, I love Kraftwerk! Boing Boom Chuck! ;)

In all fairness, Linkin Park is somewhat of a standout, but the Limp Kornsmack clones should be done soon.

If the record companies are complaining about a drop in sales, perhaps they should try fostering new material instead of trying to copy what is already popular. Few of them have the balls to do that anymore, or at least try the waters, Maverick Records being a possible exception.

I miss Public Enemy. I used to love them back in the days before suburban yuppie white kids started driving around pimping Eminem like they lived south of 8 Mile.

Cheap, er, Clear Channel came out of the insane ownership cycles of the 90's that once included about a half-dozen big players. I forget all their names now because they weren't in power for very long.

There's a pretty good interview with Ween, who have actually found that they've become more popular and have solidified their fan base by giving sh*t (music, video, etc.) away on thier website, in the new issue of The Onion.

They basically broke it (the contemporary culture of the music business) down like this:

'Look at where radio and rock and pop are right now: It's very depressing. You've got Clear Channel, where they can try and not call it a monopoly, but it's got a complete stranglehold on every radio station and venue. The music the labels are giving you is so bad, and so devoid of any kind of human element and soul and whatever. There's no difference between something like Christina Aguilera and whoever the nu-metal rock flavors of the day are. It's corporate music. There's no punk ethic to it. It may have the appearance of something aggressive, with piercings and tattoos and mohawks, but it's all the same. It's worse now than I can ever remember in my whole life, and people are f*cking not paying for it. They want to download it. They don't feel that they... They know they're getting f*cked. They know that a CD was $13 in the '80s and now it's $19. Why is that? And they're not album-oriented anymore. No one's trying to make records, because it's all about a single. And they want to know why no one is sympathetic that their music is getting stolen off file-sharing sites. It's because if you f*cking throw sh*t in people's faces long enough, they're going to give you the finger right back. I think it's funny. They're getting what they deserve. '

Hope this quote wasn't too long. I just thought it was really funny, and really relevant to the discussion.

I'll second the Dropkick Murphys being great motion, and I'll third the Kraftwerk comment, too.

Oh, and PE's Welcome to the Terrordome kicks some serious bum, too.

Interesting how the universe works. I was making similar points about this very radio thing over in the Codemonkey group on Suicidegirls.com in response to a couple of guys asking for help porting a radio automation app. My argument was that radio sucks in part because of automation and greedy Clear Channel, and now they want to give them free open source software?

And what did the moderator accuse me of? Why, threadjacking, of course!

Ponderous ;) When that happened, did you start ranting about how the site sucks, the mods have attitude problems, the webmaster is a smart-a$$, you have too many "adds", et cetera (you know, all the stuff you usually get accused of around here!) :)

Oh wait, it was just a threadjacking, not having a topic nuked... oops, my bad! :)

*pulls out her cane and rocking chair* Gads I'm feeling really old about now. I'm familiar with only a couple of the bands you are talking about...and you are calling them OLD???! You people have no idea what OLD is.

I should pack you all up and force you to attend a Jimmy Buffet concert.

Ever since my dad got the 2 disk Jimmy Buffet collectors CD or whatever, and played it in his car every time we go some where, I have begun to like the music, a little.

I guess just because its old dosen't mean its bad, sometimes.

Linda, my only issue with Jimmy, is that his music reeks of a little too much country. My delivery crew sings his praises all day, and have tried to convert me, but that particular style of music just doesn't work for me. Again, too close to country. Not my thing.

Anything else, though... I am all in. Well, ok. I admit Rap isn't my thing either. Now, I feel old!

Oh my lord

Rob??? You mean "Ethyl" isn't a rap group? :)

I thought you were operating the drum machines instead of actually playing the drums. ;)

Arena football has arrived in the Windy City. Go "Chicago Rush"

Wow, I see I should have looked at this thread sooner.

Random thoughts spurred by this thread, in no particular order:

Lollapalloza '93 was definitely not the best venue for Front 242, but if you rushed the stage and got right up front like I did, it was cool. And any show that had Front 242, Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains, AND Primus on one bill? Talk about a winner... (Google claims Tool was there too, but I don't recall them at the "Seattle" (actually the Gorge in George) show)

Conversely, I thought Ministry had handled themselves just fine on the '92 lineup. Of course, the heavier metal style carried better.

Agreed on the Faith No More comment. I'll toss in that a lot of bands are trying to sound like Tool, too. FNM and Tool both did it better the first time around, thanks. (At least A Perfect Circle sounds a bit different than Tool)

Let's see, what else. The new Metallica absolutely sucks -- I'll just sit back and let my hair go gray listening to Master of Puppets, or something.

At least the "progressive metal" stuff is still interesting. Dream Theater, Fates Warning, King's X, OSI, Chroma Key, Platypus, etc.

I think the "progressive metal" stuff sucks. It all just reaks of mediocrity. I remember circa 1994 thinking that Dream Theater sounded a little like a mix of Scorpions and The Cure gone horribly wrong (and without the goofy German accents).

Jimmy was kicked out of Nashville years ago when he made fun of them by writing and singing "Why don't we get drunk..." A good portion of his music has a carribean flare. My sig is taken from one of his songs. I've been a Parrothead for 30 years and have never been a major country fan.

And Oat Boy, it's McLachlan, the scottish spelling, just like my last name. In fact, she's a 3rd cousin or some such. My husband's family is from Canada.
