OH NO THE PUNS ARE BACK!!!
What's with all the abuse? I'm covered with itchy chigger bites. All for you!

Harrumph! I'm heading to the hot tub.

So there!

Paula,

Remember the Bahari fence? I think you brought it on yourself!

Andy

XM all the way. I tried Sirius, didn't like it as much. I don't care for Martha Stewart, Eminim, or Howard Stern.

But isn't it nice to see Brett and I have differing opinions, such as our choice in Sat. Radio, and neither of us feels we're 'right'? ;)

But Paula is right, XM is better ;).

OK, so now will whoever that was admit defeat in our bet about wood vs. steel supports?

-cough- Sirius -cough-

I was *going* to come to the park this weekend, but now that I know you guys listen to XM around there... I might just go to Geauga Lake instead.

I think that this could possibly be for steel supports afterall... I was doing some looking and found the steel that you see in the last picture on a Y-ledger on Hades.

http://www.rcdb.com/ig2667.htm?picture=13

If you notice the pattern, which is one bolt hole at each end and two in the middle, it's the same, except they cut one end off of it and placed it on the other side.

I have no idea why they would have only placed this one just one of those ledgers. You probably won't find many of these as CCI typically never used Y-ledgers (their banking didn't need it). CCI did sometimes use them, but very rarely, especially in the later designs. This could have been a cost saving technique since Y-ledgers take up nearly twice the amount of wood as a normal ledger and they are expensive (either 4X10 or 4X12). Maybe this could be signs of some extreme banking on the new ride?

Also, this could just be something TGG is doing and since we haven't seen a wood coaster from them yet we don't know that this wouldn't be used on one. The angle iron has always been used under ledgers in high stress areas on wood coasters, so that doesn't mean much! Although with that amount of steel, it's hard to believe it would be for a wooden coaster. Unless it just had a LOT of ledgers, which would mean a pretty long ride. It is a long way from the Fourth of July section to where those pictures were taken!

Big predatory birds. Hawks...owls...Eagles. American Eagle. Screamin' Eagle. Screachin' Eagle. Hmm. I guess will see, am I close? Am I close?!?! ;)

Damnit, why did I have to move to New England from Kentucky?

I'd pretty much given up the idea of wood supports when I saw the path cut into the trees in Paul's photos. Unless they're planning on coming back and removing a LOT more trees.

Which, of course, Will would rather not do.

So what do we have here? An out and back terrain coaster? Where does it start? In the Valley below the Rapids ride? On the side of the hill, using the steel structure to go over existing rides/walkways ala Cornball?

As for me, I'm steel hoping for a world record holder. HW is well terrained at making a big impact. This'll give em the best set of tree wooden coasters anywhere. *** Edited 5/27/2005 3:01:03 PM UTC by ThemeDesigner***

That was me and I have yet to see something that is unique to steel support woodies. I will pay up if I am wrong.

Just curious, but is it possible this is a hybrid coaster, structure-wise? I know Zeus has the steel lift structure and then the rest of the structure is wood. Just an idea.
a_hoffman50's avatar
That has been discussed earlier in this thread. Speculations have been that the structure will be wood in visible areas and then steel in the woods.
I think most hybrids are mostly wood but have steel where needed. A lot of the newer woodies have some steel even if there is no place with just steel supports. I just think a steel support structure is not HW's style, but I guess they could go with that if the ride is very large.

Holiday World just might opt to go with the steel structure to reduce the maintenance overhead. Especially if it will be a large ride. Even more so true if Jeff is feeling burnt out. Just speculation.
I have never been to Holiday World to know where this "mystery spot" is in relation to any currently existing attractions. When Paula mentioned a large predatory bird, I immedately thought "RAVEN"

It looks like it just might be a steel support structure. Here are those pieces in the last pic that Paula posted. They have the same placement of the 4 bolt holes and are used to support bents on top of each other, but instead of being bents themselves, they use two. It still could be wood, or partly wood, but I am starting to feel that Jeff might be right.

"a large predatory bird"

Raptor?

It wasn't a black bird ... it was brown.

And very mean looking.

Hungry, too.

Eagle? Hawk? Buzzard?

That rules out Turkey.

Chuck, who don't care as long as there is Stew and free water.

There is a nice overhead shot of HW posted at screamscape today if you want to see where the ride/expansion is going.
