The Click-Bait Headline Thread

I struggle to believe that Elon is that smart and that dumb. Even if the ADL says no foul, the easy way to settle it was for him to say, "Sorry, that wasn't my intent." Given his affiliations lately, I don't think it's that complicated.

The YouTube algorithm, which has been attributed to a great deal of radicalization, is really the only one getting it right for me, and it has for years. Outside of my subscriptions, if only suggests things related to those, which are all science, tech, maker stuff and a little bit of music and theater.

Whatever, dude. You weren't a part of the conversation.

Wow. I had no idea you'd been given the power to decide who could and could not participate in a coasterbuzz thread.

Cool cool cool.

I'm talking about the conversation I had with my friend.

Also, I guess I'm a "special kind of asshole."

I just realized this was in reference to my blog post. Are you making AI generated images to influence people? My guess is no, so I certainly wasn't referring to you.

Ah, my bad. I mistakenly attributed that comment to the first part of the previous sentence: "But for whatever reason, there are people willing to make excuses for poor behavior", not the second part. Not that I'm making excuses, I just don't see what he did was definitively nefarious like everyone else seems to. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't think the man would pull a stunt that would so obviously be political suicide.

If there were such a thing as political suicide still, Trump would not be president.

Musk may not be a literal nazi but he is a troll. He knew exactly what he was doing.

I’m disappointed. I thought the compressed air outage would have resulted in more headlines.

Here's a great one from yesterday.

That one is brilliant, actually. Kudos to whoever (or whatever) came up with it.

That Elon did a Nazi solute is not debatable. That is precisely what he did. The only thing that can be argued is whether he intended to do it that way, or if it was meant to be a “my heart goes out to you gesture” that he accidentally performed in the most hilariously awkward way imaginable.

To think the latter really beggars belief and requires a lot of charity, which Elon isn’t even really trying to earn. Here are some facts working against that narrative:

  • Someone his age, and especially someone that comes from a nation of relatively recent authoritarian policies, has to know what a Nazi solute looks like.

  • To my knowledge, he has not said much of anything to set the record straight on what he meant.

  • He was worked very hard to remake Twitter into a friendly space for neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

I’m open to arguments that he should receive the benefit of the doubt, but based on those facts, I’m not giving it to him. My take? He’s the world’s biggest internet troll. He did it to stir people up. He might’ve thought of it right there in the moment, but that’s why he did it.

I actually really liked Beverly. Clearly I'm insane.

I've known that about myself for a very long time.

Elon has a thorough public record of being a malevolent pathological liar, so the idea that he deserves the benefit of the doubt, ever, is ridiculous.

When Tesla removed LiDAR and Musk said they could do all their self driving with just cameras I realized he was full of ****. Then he bought Twitter and it truly unraveled.

Jeff's avatar

Actually it was radar that they removed, but yeah, along with removing the ultrasonic sensors, total mistake. We have one with, one without, and the one without does not "see" things as well as the one with. The cool thing about the radar is that it bounced under the car in front of you to range the next car up. So if the next car up stopped suddenly, it could "see" it before the car in front of you started stopping. It has literally saved my ass.

I feel bad for the other 120,000 people working at Tesla, along with everyone at SpaceX. Two innovative American companies led by a person with serious problems.

Is LiDAR is the bulky thing on the top of Waymos?

You can see that the cameras can’t paint a complete picture or anticipate anything more than the car ahead. It’s still impressive but they’ll never get to full self driving without more tech no matter how many more times Musk claims it’s coming within the year.

Jeff's avatar

Yep, that's the thing on the Waymo cars. But sight-only is stupid because it's comparing the machine to humans. If we could add radar and ultrasonic sensors to our bodies, maybe people wouldn't bump into me in crowded spaces.

That's too hard of a stance for me. Number one, I think context should always be considered, at the very least. The context in this case is making a gesture that signals solidarity with perhaps the most evil political movement in human history. That's a big deal. So, I think it's fair to start from an innocent-until-proven-guilty position. Now, as I stated, given the relevant facts here, I was able to very quickly land on guilty. But you still have to weigh the facts within the proper context.

Number two, I think Twitter, and in particular his ownership of it, has destroyed his character. Or maybe it amplified the worst aspects of his character. I'm no Elon historian, but my impression is that his complete severance from any sense of ethical behavior is relatively recent. But I could be wrong.
